What is NEAR Protocol?
NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain that went live in 2020 and uses a sharding design called Nightshade to spread work across the network. NEAR pays transaction and storage fees and is staked to validators. The project has increasingly focused on AI and user-owned agents, and co-founder Illia Polosukhin co-authored the well-known 'Attention Is All You Need' paper.
