How HODL works
During a sharp price drop in December 2013, a user on the Bitcointalk forum posted that they were "hodling", a typo of holding. The word stuck, and many later turned it into the backronym "hold on for dear life". Today a hodler is someone who buys and plans to keep their coins through ups and downs.
HODLing is a strategy, not a guarantee. It has worked for some assets over long periods, but many coins that people held for years never recovered. A thoughtful approach involves holding only assets you understand, keeping position size within what you can afford to see fall a long way, and storing coins safely.
Long-term holders often move coins to a self-custody wallet, such as a hardware wallet, so they do not depend on a single exchange. If you do that, back up your seed phrase offline and check the receiving address and network carefully when withdrawing.
Example
Suppose you buy 0.1 BTC at 40,000 USDT, spending 4,000 USDT. Six months later BTC drops to 24,000 and your holding is worth 2,400 USDT, down 40 percent. A hodler does not sell. If BTC later trades at 60,000 USDT, the same 0.1 BTC is worth 6,000 USDT, a 50 percent gain on the original 4,000. But if you had held a small altcoin that never recovered, the same patience would have locked in the loss.
Common mistakes
- Holding any coin forever without checking whether the project is still active.
- Putting money you need soon into a long-term hold.
- Leaving long-term holdings on an exchange without considering custody risk.
