The short answer

The US September consumer price index comes out today, Wednesday 14 October 2026, at 8:30 a.m. New York time, which is 12:30 UTC and 20:30 Singapore time. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect headline inflation to rise 0.6% on the month and quicken to 3.6% a year from 3.4%, while core inflation is seen at 0.2% on the month and 2.5% a year; bitcoin was holding near $83,400 into the release, and the minutes either side of 8:30 are where leveraged positions get flushed.

This is the last inflation reading before the Federal Reserve's 28 October rate decision, so traders will read it less as a number and more as a vote on whether the Fed hikes once more this year. Below: the release time in a dozen cities, what has already moved, what our own liquidation and funding data say about positioning, and a short checklist for the hour around the print.

When CPI drops where you live

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes CPI at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. New York is on daylight saving time until 1 November, so that is UTC−4 today.

Times are our conversion from 12:30 UTC. Crypto trades through the release, while US stocks open an hour later at 9:30 a.m. New York time, so the first reaction happens almost entirely in crypto and index futures.

What economists expect

MeasureConsensus (Dow Jones poll)Previous / context
Headline CPI, month on month+0.6%—
Headline CPI, year on year3.6%3.4% in August
Core CPI, month on month+0.2%—
Core CPI, year on year2.5%—

The gap between a 3.6% headline and a 2.5% core reading is mostly energy. AAA put the average US gasoline price at $4.34 a gallon against $3.08 a year earlier, and Brent crude was holding near $106 a barrel on Wednesday morning in Europe, according to CoinDesk. That matters for how the market reads the print: a hot headline driven by fuel is easier for the Fed to look through than a hot core number, which would point to inflation spreading into services and rents.

What has already moved before the print

Bitcoin spiked to $84,000 at 08:00 UTC and slipped back to about $83,450, after bouncing from a Tuesday low of $80,970, CoinDesk reported. Binance's own 24-hour ticker, read at 11:32 UTC, showed a range of $82,973 to $84,147 and a last price of $83,432, down about 0.14% on the day. Ether was flat near $2,500.

Two things eased pressure overnight. New York Fed President John Williams said he saw no need for rate increases in 2027, while leaving the door open to one more hike this year. And US stocks recovered on Tuesday after opening lower on a South Korean tech rout, with the KOSPI down 7.4% over two days, according to Cointelegraph.

Two things still weigh. The US dollar index rose 5.5% since 9 September to 102.57, its highest level since April 2025, and US bond yields sit near their highest levels in almost a quarter of a century, Cointelegraph reported, citing CryptoQuant contributor Darkfost. A stronger dollar and higher yields drain the liquidity that risk assets such as bitcoin run on.

Altcoins have lagged. The CoinDesk 80 index of smaller tokens fell 0.6% since midnight UTC, DeFi tokens were the weakest corner, and CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season index slipped to 55 from 60 a week earlier.

What our data says about positioning

NexuAlpha's liquidation tracker, which reads forced closures on Binance and OKX, counted $584.9 million of liquidations in the 24 hours to 11:29 UTC: $302.6 million of longs and $282.2 million of shorts. Both sides being hit in roughly equal size is the signature of a choppy, two-way market rather than a clean trend. Most of it was concentrated in BTC, SOL and ETH contracts on OKX. In the four hours before that snapshot, $82.0 million was liquidated, about 62% of it long positions, as bitcoin gave back the $84,000 spike.

Leverage has cooled a little. Open interest in Binance's BTCUSDT perpetual stood at about $7.60 billion, down 2.84% in 24 hours. Funding is close to neutral: 0.0031% per eight hours on Binance BTC and 0.0091% on OKX BTC at the same snapshot, so longs were not paying a heavy premium going into the release. One analyst quoted by CoinDesk warned that the recent selloff reduced leverage without clearing all of the riskier bets, which leaves room for another cascade of forced selling if yields jump and rate-cut hopes fade.

All of these figures are snapshots; the widget above and our liquidations page keep updating, and the funding-rate board shows where funding moves after the print.

How the print usually hits crypto

There is no fixed rule, and we will not predict the direction. What tends to repeat on CPI days is the shape of the move:

1. The first minute is mostly algorithms. Prices can jump several hundred dollars in either direction as bots read the headline and core numbers. Spreads widen and stop orders fill at worse prices than set. 2. Core usually matters more than headline. A 0.6% headline was expected because of fuel. A core reading above 0.2% on the month would be the surprise that changes Fed expectations. 3. The bond market decides the second move. If the 10-year Treasury yield and the dollar rise after the print, risk assets tend to weaken; if they fall, the opposite. Watching yields for 15 minutes tells you more than the first candle. 4. The 9:30 a.m. stock open is a second volatility window. Bitcoin often reprices again when US equities start trading an hour after CPI.

A checklist for the hour around 8:30 a.m. New York time

  • Cut leverage before the release, not during it. If a 2% wick against you would liquidate the position, it is too big for a CPI hour. Check your liquidation price, not just your margin ratio.
  • Use stop orders with room, or close the position and re-enter afterwards. Tight stops placed just below round numbers such as $83,000 or $82,000 sit where everyone else's do.
  • Avoid market orders in the first minutes. Liquidity thins and slippage on altcoins can be several times normal.
  • Spot holders need to do nothing. A CPI move does not change what you own; it changes the price for a while. If you planned to buy, splitting the order across the day avoids buying the spike.
  • Check funding after the print. A sharp move often drags funding with it; if you hold a perp overnight, the next funding payment on Binance and OKX is at 16:00 UTC.

How to act on this

If you trade around macro releases like this one, fees add up quickly because you are in and out of positions. Opening a futures account on Bitget through our Bitget profile with code nexu888 returns up to 60% of your trading fees; at a 0.06% taker rate, a $10,000 round trip costs about $12 in fees, of which up to $7.20 comes back. Keep position size small enough that a CPI wick cannot liquidate you, and compare the venue's fee table on the Bitget profile before you trade.

Quick answers

What time is CPI today? 8:30 a.m. New York time on Wednesday 14 October 2026, which is 12:30 UTC, 20:30 in Singapore and 09:30 in São Paulo.

What is expected? Headline +0.6% on the month and 3.6% a year; core +0.2% on the month and 2.5% a year, according to a Dow Jones poll of economists.

Why does CPI move bitcoin? It changes expectations for Fed interest rates and bond yields, which drive the dollar and the liquidity that flows into risk assets.

When is the next Fed decision? 28 October 2026. Today's CPI is the last inflation report before it.

Is it safe to hold a leveraged position through CPI? Only if a sudden move of a few percent would not liquidate it. Two-way liquidations of about $585 million in the past day show how quickly both sides are getting hit.
