The short answer

The International Monetary Fund's October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report studied the five most actively traded tokenized US equity products and found that more than half of their trading happens outside regular US market hours and about 80% of trades are for less than one share. The same products were roughly 1.5 times as volatile as the shares they track and noticeably less liquid, especially on decentralized exchanges. For a reader, that means tokenized stocks do deliver weekend access and fractional sizes, but you pay for it with wider swings and thinner order books, and what you actually own depends on the product's legal structure.

What the IMF studied

The analysis is Chapter 3 of the IMF's October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report, titled "Scaling Tokenization: New Efficiencies, New Vulnerabilities", released on 8 October. CoinDesk reported on its tokenized-equity findings on 11 October, and crypto.news published a detailed summary the same day; both point to the same chapter.

According to crypto.news, the IMF examined five actively traded tokenized US equity products covering Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-linked exposure, issued by Ondo Finance and xStocks and traded across 11 venues. The sample covered about $345 million of tokenized equity value, roughly 15% of the tokenized stock market measured in the report, over 365 trading days and more than 2 million five-minute observations of price and volume. CoinDesk describes the sample as spanning centralized and decentralized venues.

Put the last two rows side by side and tokenized equities are about 0.0014% of the global stock market by value (our arithmetic: $2.3 billion divided by $160 trillion). The IMF's point is that the product works, but the market is still very small.

crypto.news adds that tokenized credit made up $30.4 billion of the $65 billion and money market funds $17.5 billion, and that Ondo Finance and Backed Finance together accounted for more than 70% of tokenized equity value.

Why tokenized stocks swing more

The IMF links the extra volatility mainly to liquidity. When US exchanges are closed, the tokenized version is still trading, but with far fewer buyers and sellers. A modest order can then move the price more than the same order would on Nasdaq at 11 a.m.

The ranking in the report is consistent with that explanation. Per crypto.news, decentralized exchanges showed the highest volatility and the weakest liquidity, centralized crypto exchanges came next, and conventional stock markets were the most liquid. Higher-volume platforms also kept their prices closer to the underlying share while US markets were open, and decentralized venues showed larger and more frequent gaps.

There is a useful side to after-hours trading too. The IMF found that overnight moves in the tokenized products carried real information: once the US market opened, most of the overnight move showed up in the conventional share within the first five minutes. In plain terms, weekend and overnight tokenized prices were often an early read on where the stock would open, not just noise. The IMF called this preliminary given the small sample.

What the IMF wants fixed before the market grows

The report does not argue against tokenized stocks. It argues that four things need to be in place before they scale: legal certainty about what a token gives you, regulatory clarity based on the activity rather than the technology, compatibility between networks, and access to suitable settlement assets.

The legal point is the one that reaches individual investors first. The IMF notes, per crypto.news, that a token can be direct ownership of a share, an entitlement held through an intermediary, or simply a product that tracks a share's price. Those three give you different rights to dividends, votes and recovery if the issuer or venue fails. Our explainer on custodial versus synthetic tokenized stocks walks through that difference.

The IMF also flagged systemic risks it considers small today because the market is small: automated margin calls and liquidations, collateral moving quickly between connected platforms, and 24-hour trading could make a shock harder to contain. It suggested evaluating circuit breakers and similar controls.

Where the market is heading

CoinDesk lists the venues already offering tokenized stock trading: Coinbase, Kraken, Binance and Robinhood, plus Bullish, which started in August. It also reports that OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, filed earlier this month for a venue offering round-the-clock trading in tokenized US shares.

The IMF's data covers a period when the market was even smaller, so the patterns could change as more institutions join. For background on how one major venue structures its product, see our guides to OKX's unified tokenized stocks, Binance's bStocks versus TradFi perps and Securitize's tokenized US equities on Solana, or browse the tokenized assets hub.

How to act on this

If you want exposure to US stocks outside market hours, the IMF's findings translate into three habits. Use limit orders rather than market orders, because thin overnight books are exactly where a market order fills at a bad price. Check the spread against the last US close before trading on a weekend. And read the product page to see whether the token is backed by shares held in custody or only tracks the price. Quick answers

Are tokenized stocks more volatile than normal stocks? In the IMF's sample, yes: about 1.5 times as volatile as the underlying shares, with decentralized exchanges the most volatile.

When do people trade tokenized stocks? More than half of the trading in the IMF's sample took place outside regular US market hours, which run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time on business days.

How big is the tokenized stock market? About $2.3 billion at the end of July 2026, inside a tokenized real-world asset market of about $65 billion, according to the IMF.

Do overnight tokenized prices predict the stock's open? The IMF found that most of the overnight move was reflected in the conventional share within five minutes of the open, but called the evidence preliminary.

Does a tokenized stock give me shareholder rights? Only if the product is structured that way. The IMF stresses that a token may be direct ownership, an entitlement through an intermediary, or a price tracker.

We could not download the IMF chapter directly because the IMF website blocked our automated request, so the figures here come from CoinDesk's and crypto.news's reports of the chapter, which agree on the main numbers; the overnight price-discovery figure is "more than 85%" in CoinDesk and "87% to 99%" in crypto.news. The study covers five products from two issuers and a small market, so the results may not hold for every tokenized stock or venue. This is news and education, not investment advice.
