The short answer
Wormhole's W token rose about 63-66% in the 24 hours to 04:48 UTC on 12 October 2026, from roughly $0.0174 to $0.0283, and was the biggest gainer in NexuAlpha's market feed. We found no new announcement from Wormhole that explains the move. What the exchange data does show is a futures-driven rally: Binance perpetual volume was about 7.7 times Binance spot volume, Binance open interest grew about 2.7-fold in dollar terms, and funding is now negative on Binance and OKX but strongly positive on Hyperliquid, so the two crowds are paying in opposite directions.

What happened to the W price, hour by hour
The move came in two legs, both visible in Binance's one-hour candles for the WUSDT perpetual contract.
For most of Sunday, 11 October, W traded in a tight band between about $0.0169 and $0.0180. Hourly turnover on the perpetual was well under $1 million. Nothing in the price action hinted at what came next.
The first leg started at 16:00 UTC. Over the next four hours the contract climbed from about $0.0178 to a high of $0.02333 in the 20:00 UTC candle, with hourly volume rising from $1.5 million to $22.9 million. That same 20:00 candle then reversed hard and closed at $0.01984, roughly 15% below its high. Anyone who chased the first spike with leverage was shaken out within the hour.
The second leg was larger. In the 02:00 UTC candle on Monday, 12 October, the price went from $0.02299 to a high of $0.02950 and closed at $0.02880, about 25% higher than the open of that single hour, on $63.1 million of volume. The 03:00 UTC candle printed the day's high at $0.0302 on another $61.5 million. At 04:48 UTC the last trade was $0.02835.
Binance's 24-hour ticker for the perpetual showed an open of $0.017352, a low of $0.017183, a high of $0.0302 and a change of +63.38%. Binance spot showed almost the same change, +63.41%. NexuAlpha's own market feed, read at 04:43 UTC, listed WUSDT at +65.97% on $260 million of volume, the largest move among the contracts we track; the difference between the two readings is timing.
The futures footprint: volume, open interest and positioning
Three data points tell us this was mainly a derivatives rally.
Volume. Binance's WUSDT perpetual traded $263.9 million in 24 hours. Binance's W/USDT spot pair traded $34.1 million. By our arithmetic, futures volume was about 7.7 times spot volume on the same exchange. OKX's W perpetual traded about 4.73 billion W in the same window.
Open interest. On Binance, open interest in the W perpetual sat near $8.9 million for most of 11 October. It reached $13.4 million around 20:00 UTC, $14.4 million around 02:00 UTC, and at 04:48 UTC stood at 844.05 million W. At the then mark price of $0.02838 that is about $24.0 million, roughly 2.7 times the Sunday level in dollars. Measured in coins, open interest rose from about 509 million W to 844 million, around 66%, so new positions were opened rather than just repriced. OKX reported a further $9.96 million of open interest, and Hyperliquid about 1.01 billion W, or roughly $28.9 million at its mark price.

Abrir →Who is positioned how. Binance's ratio of accounts holding long versus short positions was 1.70 at 23:00 UTC on 11 October, meaning 63% of accounts with a position were long. By 04:00 UTC on 12 October it had fallen to 0.88, with 53% of accounts short. Retail-sized accounts on Binance increasingly bet against the rally as it extended.
Funding is pointing in opposite directions
Funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts on a perpetual contract. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Our funding-rate explainer covers the mechanics.
Here is what each venue showed around 04:48 UTC:
Tabla del artículo: desplázate horizontalmente o enfoca el área de la tabla y usa las flechas.
| Venue | Funding rate | Interval | Who pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance WUSDT | -0.0055% | every 4 hours | shorts pay longs |
| OKX W-USDT-SWAP | -0.0228% | current period | shorts pay longs |
| Hyperliquid W | +0.0398% | every hour | longs pay shorts |
The Hyperliquid number stands out. At +0.0398% per hour, a long position would pay close to 1% of its notional a day if the rate held, which by our arithmetic annualises to about 350%. Hyperliquid's mark price was also about 0.42% above its oracle price, another sign that buyers there were paying up. On Binance and OKX the opposite was true: enough traders had opened shorts that the shorts were paying to keep them.
This split matters because it shows two different crowds. On the largest centralised venues, a growing share of accounts is betting that the spike fades. On Hyperliquid, where W can be traded with at most 5x leverage, longs are crowded and paying heavily to stay in. A sharp move in either direction would hit one of the two groups hard. The pattern looks like the one we described during the Starknet rally on 11 October, when open interest tripled while most traders bet against the move.
The BTC and ETH funding rates on our funding-rate board were close to zero at the same time, so this was a W-specific setup, not a market-wide leverage build-up. Bitcoin was up 1.35% and ether 2.38% over the same 24 hours, according to our feed.
Is there news behind the rally?
We could not find a primary-source catalyst. Wormhole's official blog lists no new announcement in October; the most recent update in its announcements category was a post about changes to supported networks, last updated on 7 August 2026. News aggregator Pluang reported that a large trader made about $937,000 on a leveraged long position in W, but we could not verify that figure against on-chain or exchange data, so we treat it as unconfirmed.
When a token moves 60% without an announcement and the move is concentrated in perpetual futures, the usual explanations are leveraged positioning, a large buyer, or a short squeeze feeding on itself. The data above fits a leverage-driven move better than a fundamental re-rating, but it cannot tell us who started it.
What to watch next
- Open interest versus price. If W holds near $0.028 while open interest keeps rising, new leverage is still arriving. If open interest falls quickly while price drops, longs are being liquidated; if it falls while price rises, shorts are covering.
- Hyperliquid funding. A rate near +0.04% per hour is expensive to hold. Watch whether it cools as longs take profit or close, or stays high.
- The 20:00 UTC pattern. The first leg gave back about 15% within one hour. Thin altcoin order books can move that much again.
- A real announcement. If Wormhole or a major venue publishes news later today, that changes the picture; check the official blog rather than social media screenshots.
- Our live tools. Market-wide liquidations are on the liquidations page, and BTC, ETH and SOL funding on the funding board.
How to act on this without getting caught
A 60% move in a mid-cap token with negative funding on one venue and expensive funding on another is not a setup that rewards high leverage. If you trade it at all, size the position so that a 15% move against you, like the one at 20:00 UTC, does not liquidate you, check the funding rate on the venue you actually use before you open, and remember that a short paying negative funding still loses if the squeeze continues. Fees also add up on fast in-and-out trades: OKX charges regular accounts 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on USDT perpetuals, and registering with code nexu888 returns 40% of trading fees, settled hourly. If you prefer on-chain perpetuals, Hyperliquid is the largest perp DEX and you can sign up with code NEXU888. See the OKX profile and the Hyperliquid profile.
Quick answers
Why is Wormhole (W) up today? We found no official announcement. Exchange data shows a futures-led rally: perpetual volume far above spot, rising open interest, and funding that split between venues.
How much did W rise? About 63% on Binance's 24-hour ticker and 66% in NexuAlpha's feed, from roughly $0.0174 to $0.0283, with a high of $0.0302.
Are traders long or short W? On Binance, 53% of accounts with a position were short by 04:00 UTC, and funding was negative on Binance and OKX. On Hyperliquid, funding was strongly positive, so longs dominate there.
Is W funding negative? On Binance (-0.0055% per 4 hours) and OKX (-0.0228%), yes. On Hyperliquid it was +0.0398% per hour.
Was there a W token unlock or listing today? We found no such announcement in the sources we checked.
Limits of this article
Prices, open interest, positioning and funding were read between 04:43 and 04:50 UTC on 12 October 2026 and will have changed. Open-interest dollar figures and the futures-to-spot ratio are our arithmetic from exchange data. The long/short account ratio counts accounts, not position size. We did not find the cause of the move, and we do not claim that any single trader or event caused it. This is market data and analysis, not a forecast or investment advice.
