The short answer
Bitcoin is down today because US inflation came in hotter than expected: September CPI rose to 3.7% a year (forecast 3.6%) and core CPI to 2.6% (forecast 2.5%), which revived talk of a Federal Reserve rate hike as soon as October. Within ten minutes of the 8:30 a.m. New York release, bitcoin fell from $83,933 to $82,606 on Binance, and Binance and OKX recorded about $40.3 million of long liquidations in the following hour against only $3.5 million of shorts.
Nothing changed about bitcoin itself; what changed was the price of money. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to about 5.28%, US stock futures slipped, and leveraged longs who had bet on a soft print were forced out. Below: the numbers that surprised, the minute-by-minute move, what our liquidation and funding data show now, and what to do if you hold spot or leveraged positions.

What the September CPI report actually said
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the September consumer price index on Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time (12:30 UTC, 20:30 Singapore). Two independent outlets carried the same figures within minutes, CNBC and CoinDesk:

| Measure | September | August | Forecast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headline CPI, month on month | +0.6% | +0.4% | +0.6% |
| Headline CPI, year on year | 3.7% | 3.4% | 3.6% |
| Core CPI, month on month | +0.3% | +0.3% | +0.2% |
| Core CPI, year on year | 2.6% | 2.4% | 2.5% |
The monthly headline number was exactly what economists expected, so the shock came from two places. The annual rate rose to 3.7%, a tenth above forecast, and core inflation, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month instead of the 0.2% economists had pencilled in. Core is the measure the Fed watches most closely, because it tells the central bank whether price pressure is spreading beyond fuel.
Energy did most of the damage. According to CNBC, the energy index jumped 5.2% in September and gasoline prices rose 9.1%, accounting for about half of the headline gain. Food prices were flat on the month and up 2.5% from a year earlier, while shelter rose 0.4% and used cars and trucks 0.7%. Shelter and used cars sit inside core, which is why core missed.
Why a tenth of a percent moved bitcoin
Going into the print, a string of Fed speakers had signalled that the central bank was likely to raise rates by another 25 basis points before the end of the year. CoinDesk reported that market pricing pointed to a pause at the 28 October meeting and a hike in early December. A hotter core reading pulls that hike forward: traders now have to consider a move this month.
The chain from there to bitcoin runs through bonds. The 10-year Treasury yield rose about 6.5 basis points to 5.284% straight after the data, near its highest level in more than two decades, and Nasdaq 100 futures fell about 0.65%. When safe US government debt pays more than 5%, the bar for holding volatile assets rises, the dollar tends to firm, and leveraged traders who borrowed to go long pay more for that borrowing. Bitcoin has traded closely with the Nasdaq this month, and analysts quoted by CoinDesk earlier in the day said the rate worry was what had kept bitcoin boxed between roughly $81,000 and $84,000.

Binance's BTC/USDT five-minute candles show how fast it happened:

| Time (UTC) | Open | High | Low | Close |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12:25 | 83,661.72 | 83,910.01 | 83,654.00 | 83,860.01 |
| 12:30 (release) | 83,860.01 | 83,933.00 | 82,730.88 | 82,871.11 |
| 12:35 | 82,871.11 | 82,969.55 | 82,763.33 | 82,832.90 |

| 12:45 | 82,846.70 | 82,937.83 | 82,742.00 | 82,928.85 |
From the 12:30 high to the 12:40 low, bitcoin lost $1,327, or about 1.6%. By 12:49 UTC it traded at $82,907, down 0.53% on the day. Ether was at $2,483.68 (−0.85%) and Solana at $105.90 (−0.75%). The pattern was the classic CPI shape: a fast drop in the release candle as algorithms read the headline and core numbers, then a slower grind lower as stops below $83,000 and $82,700 were hit.
One small offset: Strive (ASST) disclosed that it bought another 2,822 BTC for $235 million at an average of $83,266 earlier this week, bringing its holdings to 35,595 coins. Corporate buying like that supports the price over weeks; it does not stop a macro-driven flush in minutes.
What our liquidation and funding data show
Our collector watches liquidation orders on Binance and OKX. In the hour to 12:49 UTC it counted $43.8 million of forced closures across 6,218 orders, of which $40.3 million were longs and $3.5 million shorts, so about 92% of the damage fell on traders betting on a rise. The single largest order was a $1.08 million ETH/USDT long on Binance, liquidated at 12:30:10 UTC, ten seconds after the release. Over four hours, liquidations reached $104.5 million, with $96.8 million on the long side. Over 24 hours the picture is more balanced, $347.6 million of longs against $291.7 million of shorts, because shorts had been squeezed earlier in the week.
Positioning was not extreme going in, which is why the flush stayed modest. Open interest in Binance's BTCUSDT perpetual was about $7.59 billion, down 2.76% in a day, and funding for BTC was close to neutral at 0.0039% per eight hours on Binance and 0.0091% on OKX. Ether funding on Binance was slightly negative at −0.0043%, meaning ether shorts were paying longs. The next funding payment on both venues is at 16:00 UTC. Our liquidations page and funding-rate board keep updating after this snapshot.
What to do now
If you hold spot bitcoin or ether. Nothing in today's report changes what you own. A hotter CPI changes the cost of money and therefore the price for a while; it does not touch the network, supply or custody. If you planned to buy, splitting the purchase across days avoids chasing a single macro candle.
If you hold leveraged longs. Check your liquidation price against the levels traders are now watching: the 50-day moving average near $81,000, which CoinDesk said buyers defended on Tuesday, and the $84,000 ceiling bitcoin has failed to close above. If a further 2–3% drop would liquidate you, the position is too large for a week with a possible Fed hike. Lower leverage or add margin before the US stock open and the next funding window, not during them.
If you trade shorts. The obvious trade is crowded quickly. With ether funding already slightly negative, shorts pay to stay open, and a hawkish surprise that is already priced can reverse fast.
Watch the next dates. The Fed's decision on 28 October is the next scheduled catalyst, and our economic calendar lists the data in between. The earlier CPI preview explains the release times by city and how the first minutes of a CPI print usually trade.
How to act on this
Days like this are when trading costs pile up, because you are cutting, re-entering or hedging positions in a hurry. If you trade futures, opening your account on Bitget through our Bitget profile with code nexu888 returns up to 60% of your trading fees; at Bitget's 0.06% futures taker rate a $10,000 round trip costs about $12, of which up to $7.20 comes back. Keep size small enough that the next macro candle cannot liquidate you, and compare fees and products on the Bitget profile before you add exposure.
Quick answers
Why is bitcoin down today? Because September CPI came in at 3.7% a year and core at 2.6%, both a tenth above forecast, which raised the odds of a Fed rate hike as soon as 28 October and pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to about 5.28%.
How far did bitcoin fall? On Binance, from $83,933 at the release to a low of $82,606 ten minutes later, about 1.6%, before steadying near $82,900.
How many traders were liquidated? Binance and OKX recorded about $43.8 million of liquidations in the hour after the release, $40.3 million of them longs.
Was the CPI number bad? The monthly headline was in line at 0.6%; the surprise was the annual rate and core inflation, driven by a 9.1% jump in gasoline and higher shelter and used-car prices.
What happens next? Markets will price the Fed's 28 October decision. Watch Treasury yields, the US stock open and funding rates; a daily close back above $84,000 would be the first sign the range has broken upward.
