Direct answer

A tokenized Treasury is a digital or blockchain-recorded route to Treasury-linked exposure. The token label does not automatically mean that the holder owns a U.S. Treasury bill directly. The product may be a direct government-security record, a regulated fund share represented on chain, a private fund interest, an intermediary claim, or a reserve-backed product.

The first useful question is not “what is the yield?” It is: what legal instrument does the token represent, who keeps the official ownership record, who controls subscriptions and redemptions, and which official source proves those facts? For BUIDL, BENJI or any generic tokenized Treasury product, compare issuer, recordkeeper, custodian, transfer controls, redemption route, eligibility and fees before comparing headline yield.

NexuAlpha uses this article as a source trail, not as a product ranking. It does not verify a specific user's eligibility, tax result, account approval, private fee, live yield, wallet approval or redemption right. Content updated: September 22, 2026.

A direct Treasury security, a money-market fund share, a private fund interest and a reserve-backed token can all reference Treasuries. They do not give the same ownership, redemption or transfer rights.

Direct Treasury baseline

TreasuryDirect describes marketable Treasury securities as bills, notes, bonds, TIPS and floating rate notes. Investors buy them through auction, either through TreasuryDirect or through a bank, broker or dealer. Each auctioned security has a CUSIP, and TreasuryDirect describes a $100 minimum bid for marketable purchases.

That route is different from seeing a Treasury-themed token in a wallet. A Treasury bill is a government security with maturity and auction mechanics. A Treasury note pays fixed interest under its terms. A tokenized product may hold Treasuries or government securities in its portfolio, but the user may legally hold a fund share, a private fund interest, a platform claim or another contractual exposure.

SEC and FINRA materials help frame the difference. Tokenization can be part of an issuer or transfer-agent record, or it can be a third-party wrapper around another asset or interest. Putting an exposure on a blockchain does not remove securities rules, fund documents, custody controls, investor eligibility or redemption terms.

BUIDL and BENJI as different structures

BUIDL refers to the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund. BlackRock publishes official token addresses and warns users to verify them because fake tokens can copy familiar names. SEC filings identify BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund Ltd. as an issuer, and filed service materials describe Securitize-related onboarding, KYC/KYB/AML checks, transfer-agent and registrar work, token deployment, issuance and burn mechanics, redemptions, payment processing and shareholder records.

The BUIDL lesson is that an official address is only one field. A user also needs to check issuer, eligibility, exemption, supported chains, transfer-agent role, redemption process and service-provider duties before treating the token as Treasury exposure.

BENJI is tied to Franklin Templeton's Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund, ticker FOBXX. Franklin describes BENJI as the token representation of a U.S.-registered money market fund using public blockchain technology for recordkeeping. The prospectus says the transfer agent maintains the official record of share ownership through a blockchain-integrated system, with permissioned records, whitelisted wallets and administrative controls.

That means BENJI can feel crypto-native while still operating as a fund share with controlled records. The transfer agent can correct errors, address unauthorized transactions and limit transferability. Purchases and redemptions depend on fund documents, app or portal access, business-day processing and AML/KYC checks.

Yield, fees, redemption and transfer risk

Tokenized Treasury products are often marketed through yield, but yield should be read after structure. A direct Treasury bill earns through discount-to-face-value mechanics. A note or bond pays interest under its terms. A tokenized money-market fund distributes fund income after expenses, waivers and service economics. A platform claim may add more counterparties between the user and the underlying portfolio.

Fees also need separation. Fund expenses, platform charges, network costs, service-provider fees, waivers and private account terms can change realized return. A public product page may not disclose every economic term relevant to a specific user.

Redemption is the stress test. Who can redeem, with whom, during which business hours, in what asset, after which KYC/KYB or sanctions checks, and under what suspension language? If those answers are missing, the product should be marked unknown rather than treated as cash, a Treasury bill or a stablecoin equivalent.

Transfer controls matter as much as redemption. A wallet may show a token balance while transfers remain restricted to approved wallets or corrected by a transfer agent. That is not automatically bad, but it must be described as controlled rather than permissionless.

Practical checklist before using a tokenized Treasury route

1. Identify the legal instrument: direct Treasury security, registered fund share, private fund interest, intermediary claim or reserve-backed exposure. 2. Save the official source naming issuer, transfer agent, custodian, broker, platform or recordkeeper. 3. Confirm whether purchase, transfer or redemption requires a whitelisted wallet, approved account, business-hours processing or an institutional onboarding flow. 4. Separate fund expenses, service-provider economics, platform charges and network costs. 5. Check official token addresses only from the issuer or documented service provider. 6. Treat regional eligibility, tax treatment, margin use and account approval as unknown until the official logged-in flow or legal document confirms them.

How this connects inside NexuAlpha

Use the tokenized Treasuries topic for the evergreen checklist and source matrix. Use the tokenized assets hub when the broader question is whether Treasuries, tokenized stocks or stock perpetuals are the right category. Use tokenized stocks vs perpetuals when the user is comparing securities-like exposure with derivatives-like exposure.

For exchange context, NexuAlpha links Coinbase and Kraken profiles because those venues sit near crypto, brokerage and tokenized-asset discovery paths. Coinbase vs Kraken should be read only as exchange background, not as a tokenized Treasury product recommendation.

FAQ

Do tokenized Treasuries mean I own Treasury bills directly?

Not automatically. Direct Treasury ownership points to TreasuryDirect, a bank, broker or dealer record and the government security's CUSIP. A tokenized product may instead be a fund share, a private fund token, an intermediary claim or another exposure.

Are BUIDL and BENJI the same structure?

No. BUIDL research starts with BlackRock, SEC filings, Securitize service documents and official token addresses. BENJI research starts with Franklin Templeton's FOBXX page, prospectus, Benji materials and transfer-agent recordkeeping language. Both can reference Treasuries, but their issuer, recordkeeper, access and transfer controls differ.

Is a higher displayed yield enough to choose a product?

No. Yield must be read together with legal instrument, expense source, fee waiver, redemption right, transfer restrictions, account eligibility, custody and service-provider risk. A stale yield screenshot is not enough evidence.

Can tokenized Treasury products be used as collateral?

Only if the relevant venue or lender accepts the exact product under documented terms. Check valuation source, haircut, permitted chains, transfer controls, redemption timing, custodian role and failure path. Missing evidence should be marked unknown.
