The short answer
Crypto is down on 12 October 2026 because Bitcoin lost its early-week bounce as oil prices jumped on fresh strikes around Ukraine and the Strait of Hormuz, two days before US inflation data: BTC touched $84,352 on Binance and was back at about $82,640 by 16:48 UTC, down 1.5% in 24 hours. Altcoins fell harder, with Solana down 3.4% and XRP 3.5%, and our liquidation feed counted $6.8 million of forced closes in four hours, 93% of them longs, with SOL alone accounting for almost half.

What moved the market
The trigger was macro, not a crypto-specific event. Cointelegraph reported that Bitcoin reached $84,254 on Bitstamp, its highest level since Wednesday, before dropping as much as 2.2% into the Wall Street open. Over the same hours, Ukraine's president accused Russia of continuing to hit energy infrastructure despite a strike moratorium announced by US President Donald Trump, and Iran reported that an oil tanker had been hit and was burning in the Strait of Hormuz. WTI crude moved past $94 a barrel and Brent reached $107.25, its highest since 16 September, according to the same report.
Oil matters to Bitcoin traders this week because of the calendar. The US Consumer Price Index is due on Wednesday, 14 October, and the Producer Price Index on Thursday. Higher crude feeds into shipping, farming and travel costs, which tends to lift consumer prices; hotter inflation makes rate cuts less likely and pushes bond yields up. Decrypt noted that the 30-year Treasury yield hit 5.70% last week, its highest since 2002, and that stocks, gold and Bitcoin sold off together that day, which points to a macro trade rather than a crypto problem.
Sentiment had already been cooling. Decrypt reported that the Crypto Fear and Greed Index it tracks fell to 56, a neutral reading, from 67 a week earlier and from a 2026 high of 82 on 26 August. The separate alternative.me index read 69 ("greed") on 12 October, down from 73 on 6 October, so the direction agrees even if the two gauges use different inputs. Spot Bitcoin ETFs are also net sellers for the month: Decrypt counted $386.3 million of net outflows in October so far, after $484.9 million left on one day last week, the worst day since June.

| Asset (Binance spot) | Last price | 24h change | 24h high | 24h low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTC | $82,642 | -1.5% | $84,352 | $82,411 |
| ETH | $2,521 | -1.2% | $2,580 | $2,514 |
| SOL | $108.46 | -3.4% | $113.40 | $108.32 |
| XRP | $1.37 | -3.5% | n/a | n/a |
| DOGE | $0.085 | -2.6% | n/a | n/a |
SOL's 24-hour low and last price were almost the same number, which means it was still printing fresh lows at the time of writing rather than bouncing. Bitcoin, by contrast, held about $200 above its 24-hour low. Cointelegraph cited CoinGlass order-book data showing about $180 million of sell orders clustered around $84,500 and bids building near $82,000, which frames the range traders are watching into CPI.
Who got liquidated
Our own feed, built from Binance's force-order stream and OKX liquidation orders for BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and DOGE, shows the selling landed on leveraged longs.
In the four hours to 16:48 UTC we counted $6.79 million of liquidations, of which $6.34 million (93%) were longs and $0.45 million shorts. OKX SOL-USDT perpetuals alone accounted for $3.30 million, ahead of ETH at $1.55 million, BTC at $1.30 million and XRP at $0.43 million. The single largest order in that window was a $549,350 SOL long liquidated at 13:30 UTC, close to the Wall Street open when the oil move was at its sharpest. Over the full 24 hours the total was $36.5 million, about two-thirds longs, led by ETH ($14.3 million) and BTC ($12.0 million). The 24-hour figure includes the weekend's earlier swings, so the four-hour number is the cleaner read on today's drop.
Positioning on Solana explains why it fell harder. On Binance, 70% of accounts with an open SOL-USDT perpetual position were long at 16:00 UTC, a long/short account ratio of 2.34. Open interest was flat in coin terms over 24 hours (about 8.51 million SOL) but fell from $952 million to $926 million in dollar terms, so traders did not cut exposure much; the drop in value came from the price. Funding was mildly positive, 0.0042% on Binance and 0.0015% on OKX for the period ending 00:00 UTC on 13 October, so longs were still paying shorts, though at a small rate. A crowded long side with positive funding is the setup where a macro shock turns into a liquidation cascade, and SOL was the clearest example today. You can follow those rates live on our funding-rate board.
What it means for you this week
Three things matter more than today's candle. First, Wednesday's CPI print is the event the market is positioning for; a hot number on the back of $100-plus Brent would support the yield move that weighed on Bitcoin last week, while a soft one would ease it. Second, Bitcoin is holding a range: the $84,500 sell wall above and the $82,000 bid area below are the levels most traders are quoting. Third, altcoin longs remain crowded, so further macro shocks are likely to hit SOL, XRP and other high-beta coins harder than BTC, as they did today.
If you trade perpetuals into CPI, the practical moves are simple: lower leverage so a 3% to 4% wick does not take your position, set the stop before the release rather than during it, and check funding before holding an alt long overnight. Our liquidations tracker updates through the session if you want to see whether today's flush continues.
What we could not verify
We do not have a breakdown of who sold spot Bitcoin today, and our liquidation feed covers Binance's stream and OKX's five largest perpetuals only, so the true market-wide total is higher than the numbers above.
Quick answers
Why is Bitcoin down today? Oil jumped on new strikes in Ukraine and an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, two days before US CPI data, and Bitcoin gave back its early-week gains, slipping from $84,352 to about $82,640.
Why is Solana falling more than Bitcoin? SOL longs were crowded, with 70% of Binance accounts long, and $3.3 million of SOL longs were liquidated on OKX in four hours.
How much was liquidated? We counted $6.8 million in four hours to 16:48 UTC, 93% longs, and $36.5 million over 24 hours.
When is CPI? Wednesday, 14 October 2026; PPI follows on Thursday.
Is the market in fear? Not yet. Decrypt's index is neutral at 56 and alternative.me reads 69, both down from earlier highs.
