Address verification
Definition
Comparing the intended destination with the address used for a transfer.
How address verification works
Transaction history can contain misleading destinations, including look-alike addresses. Obtain the recipient’s address through a trusted channel and compare the complete destination before signing. Also confirm the network and any required memo. A visually familiar fragment is weak evidence when a mistake can send funds to an unrelated address.
Example
A sender ignores a recent look-alike transfer and checks the recipient’s saved instructions before submitting the withdrawal.
Common mistakes
- Copying a destination from recent activity can reproduce an attacker’s address.
FAQ
Is history a reliable address book?
Look-alike destinations can appear in history, so obtain recipient instructions independently.
