FOMO

Also called: fear of missing out

Definition

FOMO, or fear of missing out, is the anxious urge to buy an asset after its price has already risen sharply, driven by the worry that others are profiting without you.

How FOMO works

FOMO usually shows up when a coin is trending everywhere: big green candles, screenshots of gains and friends asking whether you bought yet. The emotional pull is strongest at exactly the point where the move is already large and the risk of a pullback is highest.

In trading, FOMO leads to chasing: buying with market orders at the top of a spike, skipping your usual analysis, using more leverage than usual or putting in more money than you planned. Late buyers often provide the liquidity that early buyers sell into.

The fix is a process you decide before the excitement. Set a maximum position size per trade, decide entry levels in advance and place a stop-loss when you open. If you missed a move, it is fine to wait. There will always be another opportunity, but recovering from a large loss takes time.

Example

Suppose a coin rises from 1.00 to 1.60 USDT in two days and you buy 1,000 USDT worth at 1.60 because everyone is talking about it. The next day it drops back to 1.20, a 25 percent fall from your entry, and your position is worth 750 USDT. Had you set a rule to risk no more than 2 percent of a 5,000 USDT account, your stop-loss plan would have capped the loss at about 100 USDT.

Common mistakes

  • Buying with a market order into a vertical price spike.
  • Abandoning your planned position size because a coin is trending.
  • Treating screenshots of other people's gains as evidence that a trade is still early.

FAQ

What does FOMO mean in crypto?

It means fear of missing out, the urge to buy because prices are rising fast and you do not want to miss gains.

How do I avoid FOMO trading?

Write down your entry rules, position size and stop-loss before you trade, and only act when a setup meets those rules.

Is FOMO the opposite of FUD?

Roughly. FOMO pushes people to buy out of greed and anxiety, while FUD pushes people to sell out of fear and doubt.
