Perp DEX (on-chain perpetuals)
Also called: perp DEX · perpetual DEX · on-chain perps · decentralized perpetual exchange
Definition
A perp DEX is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures, letting you trade with leverage from your own wallet while margin, positions and settlement are handled on-chain or on a dedicated chain.
How perp DEX works
Perp DEXs use the same building blocks as perpetual futures on centralized exchanges: margin, leverage, mark price, funding rate and liquidation. Hyperliquid runs an on-chain order book on its own chain. GMX and similar platforms let traders trade against a liquidity pool priced by oracles. dYdX runs an order book on its own chain.
The main appeal is self-custody: you deposit margin from your wallet without opening an exchange account, and positions are visible on-chain. The trade-offs include smart contract or chain risk, sometimes thinner liquidity for smaller markets, oracle dependence, and the need to manage gas and bridging.
Funding intervals, fee models, maximum leverage and liquidation rules differ from platform to platform and from centralized exchanges. Read the contract specifications of the market you trade.
Example
Suppose you deposit 1,000 USDC to a perp DEX and open a 5x long on ETH at 2,500, a position worth 5,000 USDC. If ETH rises 4 percent to 2,600, the position gains about 200 USDC, a 20 percent return on margin, before fees and funding. If ETH falls 4 percent, you lose about 200 USDC. A fall of roughly 15 to 19 percent, depending on the maintenance margin, could liquidate the position.
Common mistakes
- Assuming funding intervals and fees are the same as on your usual centralized exchange.
- Using maximum leverage on a small market with thin liquidity.
- Forgetting that bridging margin to a perp DEX's chain adds its own steps and risks.

FAQ
Is Hyperliquid a DEX?
Hyperliquid is an on-chain perpetual exchange that runs on its own blockchain, so trades and positions are recorded on-chain and users trade from self-custody wallets.
Do perp DEXs require KYC?
Most do not require identity checks to use the contracts, though some block access from certain countries through their front-end.
