Wash trading

Also called: fake volume · wash trade

Definition

Wash trading is when the same person or group buys and sells an asset to themselves to create fake trading volume and a false impression of demand.

How wash trading works

In a wash trade there is no real change of ownership. One account sells to another account controlled by the same party, or a bot trades back and forth with itself. The goal is to make a token, an NFT collection or an exchange look more active than it really is.

Inflated volume can push a token up rankings, attract traders who look for busy markets, help meet listing requirements or make an exchange seem bigger. It can also be used to fake NFT sale prices. In many traditional markets wash trading is illegal, and regulators increasingly apply similar rules to crypto, though the details vary by country.

For you as a trader, the risk is false confidence. A market with fake volume may have very little real depth, so your order can move the price sharply. Signs to check include volume that is huge relative to order book depth, trades of identical size repeating at regular intervals, and volume that is much higher on one small venue than on major exchanges.

Example

Suppose an NFT is bought for 1 ETH, then sold between two linked wallets for 5 ETH, 12 ETH and 20 ETH within a day. The records now show 37 ETH of volume and a last sale of 20 ETH, yet the owner only ever paid 1 ETH and no outside buyer took part. A newcomer who pays 15 ETH because the last sale was 20 ETH may find no real buyers above a few ETH.

Common mistakes

  • Trusting volume rankings without checking order book depth or the spread.
  • Using the last NFT sale price as a fair value when sales went between linked wallets.
  • Assuming a token is popular because it shows large volume on a single small exchange.

FAQ

How can you spot wash trading?

Compare volume with order book depth, look for repeated identical trade sizes, and check whether the same wallets trade back and forth. Volume concentrated on one obscure venue is another warning sign.

Is wash trading illegal in crypto?

It depends on the country and the asset. Many jurisdictions treat it as market manipulation, and enforcement in crypto has been increasing.
