Why Is Walrus (WAL) Up Today? WAL Jumps About 60% on Korean Buying and Sui's DATA Network Deal, While Shorts Pay to Bet Against It
The short answer
Walrus (WAL) is up about 60% in 24 hours, from $0.0385 to roughly $0.0616 on Binance at 16:48 UTC (00:48 SGT, 15 October 2026), in a rally that started with heavy Korean buying on Upbit and got a second leg after the Sui Foundation announced that the DATA Network will use Walrus as its default storage layer. The move is mostly a futures event: Binance's WAL perpetual traded about $349 million in a day against $29 million on the spot book, open interest roughly quadrupled, and funding has turned deeply negative, which means a crowd of short sellers is paying to bet the pump fades.

What happened, step by step (SGT)
Until late on 13 October, WAL did nothing. On Binance's spot market it spent the whole day in a tight band between $0.0376 and $0.0392, and each two-hour candle traded well under $0.3 million.
08:00 SGT, 14 October – the breakout. The first two-hour candle of the Asian morning lifted WAL from $0.0385 to a high of $0.0423 on $1.8 million of volume, six times the previous candles. By midday it had cleared $0.048 and by the afternoon $0.0536.
Korea leads. On Upbit, the largest Korean exchange, the KRW-WAL market opened the day at 52.4 won and reached 83.7 won, a gain of 59.6% on 80.3 billion won of trading. At Upbit's own USDT price of 1,354 won, that is about $59 million, or roughly 28% of the $211 million of WAL spot trading CoinGecko counts across all exchanges, from a single Korean venue. When one venue carries more than a quarter of all trading in a mid-cap token, it is usually local retail momentum, not a slow institutional bid.
23:19 SGT – the Sui announcement. The Sui Foundation published a post saying the DATA Network and its Trace registry, an on-chain record of rights-cleared AI training data, are joining the Sui stack, with Walrus becoming the default storage layer for DATA Foundation applications. The Foundation also said it is investing $30 million in the DATA Network, which will retire its own chain and run natively on Sui. In the two-hour candle that followed, WAL pushed from $0.0527 to a new high of $0.0620.
The order matters. The rally began about 15 hours before the announcement, so the news did not start the move; it gave traders a reason to extend it.
Why the Sui and DATA deal matters for WAL
Walrus is a storage network built by Mysten Labs, the original contributor to Sui. WAL is the token used to pay for storage on it. The new partnership is the kind of demand story storage tokens need: the Sui post says Trace has registered more than 250 million contributions since its June launch and processes over 3 million receipts a day, and that Walrus will hold an encrypted, unchangeable copy of each contributed file that only licensed buyers can read.
Two things to keep in perspective. First, the $30 million is a Sui Foundation stake in the DATA Network, not a purchase of WAL. Second, the post describes an integration that is being built ("will be upgraded"), so storage fees paid in WAL from this deal are still in the future and not yet measurable.

| Metric (Binance, read 16:48–16:50 UTC) | Value |
|---|---|
| WAL spot price | $0.0616 (+60.0% in 24 h) |
| 24 h spot range | $0.0376 – $0.0620 |
| Spot volume, 24 h | $28.6 million |
| Perpetual volume, 24 h | $348.5 million |
| Perpetual open interest | $2.75 million → $11.49 million in 24 h |
| Funding, last settlement (12:00 UTC) | −0.777% per 4 hours |
| Funding, 16:00 UTC settlement | −0.394% per 4 hours |
Perpetual volume was more than 12 times spot volume, and the value of open futures positions rose about 4.2 times in a day. On our own market data, WAL was also the fifth-largest symbol by liquidations on Binance and OKX in the hour to 16:44 UTC, with $0.77 million of forced closures, and it led our 24-hour gainers list on $339 million of perpetual volume.
The funding rate is the clearest signal. WAL funding settles every four hours on Binance. It was slightly positive on 13 October, then fell to −0.19% at 04:00 UTC, −0.63% at 08:00 and −0.78% at 12:00 UTC before easing to −0.39%. Bitget showed −0.46% per four hours at the same time. Negative funding means short positions pay long positions. At −0.78% per four hours, a $1,000 short pays $7.77 every settlement; if that rate held for a full day (six settlements), it would cost about 4.7%. Traders accept that only when they are confident the price will fall faster.
That is the setup of a squeeze in both directions. If the price keeps climbing, those shorts are forced to buy back and push it higher. If Korean spot buyers step away, the price can fall quickly, and longs who chased at $0.06 with leverage are the ones liquidated.
Is this a recovery or just a bounce?
Upbit's own data puts the rally in context: WAL's 52-week high on Upbit is 445 won, set on 30 November 2025, and its 52-week low is 26.5 won, from 22 August 2026. At 83.3 won, WAL is still about 81% below that high, even after today. On CoinGecko the token's market value is about $160 million with $211 million of 24-hour volume, so a day's trading was larger than the whole market cap. That ratio is typical of a short-term momentum trade, not a settled re-rating.
What to do now
If you hold WAL from lower prices: a 60% day on thin spot liquidity is a moment to decide how much you would keep if half the move reversed. Taking some profit into strength is a plan; hoping is not.
If you want to buy now: you are buying after the move, in a market led by one country's retail flow and a crowd of leveraged traders. Use a limit order, size it so a 30% drop does not hurt, and avoid market orders on the spot book, where depth is a fraction of futures volume. Our lesson on price vs fill price shows why that matters.
If you trade WAL futures: check funding before every entry on our funding-rate board. Negative funding pays longs and charges shorts, but that is a few percent a day against a token that moves 20% in hours. Keep leverage low, know your liquidation price (our liquidation and mark price lesson explains it), and do not add to a losing position because the funding looks generous.
Fees count on days like this, because volatile trading means more entries and exits. Bitget lists the WAL/USDT perpetual (it traded about $32 million in 24 hours there); opening an account through our Bitget profile with code nexu888 returns up to 60% of your trading fees. At Bitget's 0.06% futures taker rate, opening and closing a $5,000 position costs about $6, and up to $3.60 of that comes back to you.
What we could not verify
We found no official Walrus Foundation statement explaining the morning rally, and no new Upbit listing or market notice for WAL; the Korean buying is visible in Upbit's data, but its cause is not. We also cannot see liquidations on exchanges other than Binance and OKX.
Quick answers
Why is WAL up today? Heavy Korean spot buying started the move around 08:00 SGT, futures traders amplified it, and Sui's announcement that the DATA Network will store data on Walrus added a second leg late in the evening.
How much did WAL go up? About 60% in 24 hours on Binance, from $0.0385 to about $0.0616, with a high of $0.0620.
Did Sui buy WAL? No. The Sui Foundation said it is investing $30 million in the DATA Network; WAL is the token used to pay for Walrus storage, which DATA applications will use.
Why is WAL funding negative? Many traders opened short positions against the rally, so shorts pay longs every four hours, as much as 0.78% per settlement today.
Is WAL back to its high? No. On Upbit it is still about 81% below its 52-week high of 445 won.
