VIP fee tier

Also called: VIP level · fee tier · VIP program

Definition

A VIP fee tier is an exchange level that gives lower trading fees and extra benefits to users who trade high volume or hold large balances.

How VIP fee tier works

Exchanges publish a fee schedule with several levels. The base level applies to most users. Higher levels, often called VIP 1, VIP 2 and so on, cut maker and taker fees step by step. Qualification usually depends on 30-day trading volume, total asset balance or holdings of the exchange's token, and is often re-checked daily.

Spot and futures volumes may be counted separately, with separate tiers. Top levels can reach zero or even negative maker fees, which means the exchange pays you for adding liquidity. VIP status can also bring higher withdrawal limits, a dedicated account manager or better borrowing rates.

For most retail traders, the base tier applies. Some exchanges run VIP trial programs or match a VIP level you hold on another exchange. Check the fee page of your exchange for exact thresholds, since they change and differ widely.

Example

Suppose the base futures fees are 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker, and VIP 1 is 0.016% maker and 0.04% taker for 30-day volume above 10 million USDT. You trade 12 million USDT a month, all as taker. At the base level you would pay 6,000 USDT. At VIP 1 you pay 4,800 USDT, saving 1,200 USDT. The numbers are illustrative; actual thresholds and rates differ by exchange.

Common mistakes

  • Overtrading just to reach a VIP tier, increasing risk more than the fee saving is worth.
  • Forgetting that tier levels are recalculated and can drop when volume falls.
  • Assuming spot volume counts toward futures VIP levels on every exchange.

FAQ

How do you get VIP status on a crypto exchange?

Usually by reaching a 30-day trading volume or asset balance threshold. Some exchanges also offer trial programs or match VIP levels from other exchanges.

What is a negative maker fee?

It means the exchange pays you a small rebate for orders that add liquidity to the order book. It is usually only available at high VIP or market maker levels.
