Why did Aave freeze 292 reserves after the Binance outflow?
The short answer
Aave froze 175 V3 reserves and 117 V4 reserves, a combined 292, after the suspected Binance hot-wallet incident, according to risk provider LlamaRisk's October 30 account. The measure blocks new supply and borrowing in the affected reserves while repayment, withdrawal and liquidation remain enabled. A borrower therefore cannot assume that waiting for an unfreeze also suspends management of an existing position. Read LlamaRisk's account.
This follow-up to our Binance incident tracker examines the lending-market response, rather than another estimate of the exchange outflow. The new detail is the scope and mechanics of the reserve freeze: what the guardians restricted, what continues, and why a staged reopening matters to users who already supplied assets or borrowed.
The numbers describe reserves across Aave deployments. They do not mean 292 blockchains, 292 affected customer accounts or 292 separate attacks. The arithmetic is 175 + 117 = 292. LlamaRisk describes V3 coverage across 16 networks and V4 coverage across four networks. Odaily also reported the two reserve counts in its 09:06 SGT item, citing the same forum account; that is a second publication of the account, not an independent reconstruction of every transaction. Why the restriction covered assets outside the original transfers
LlamaRisk says it joined Aave Labs, TokenLogic and Certora in a joint response after the first reports. Their concern was that the actor moving the funds could exchange those assets for other tokens listed on Aave. Restricting only the tokens originally identified in the outflow would have left other entry points into the lending markets.
That explains the breadth of the response. A reserve did not have to contain an asset from the initial transfer to be included. The stated purpose was to prevent new supply and borrowing through alternative listed assets while the funds were still moving. Inclusion in the freeze consequently does not establish that a particular reserve was exploited or had a position connected to the incident.
The risk provider also explains its choice of control. A guardian can reverse a reserve freeze. By contrast, it says restoring reduced caps would have required a governance vote and about five days. That was its stated operational reason for choosing the reversible control; five days is not a promised freeze duration or a published reopening deadline.
LlamaRisk says transactions were prepared and simulated with Aave Labs engineers, then proposed to the guardian multisigs for signing and execution. These are descriptions of the response process from a participating provider. They do not establish the cause of the Binance incident or independently validate every interpretation of the original outflow.
The sequence: borrowing came before containment
The forum account places a supply of 60 million USDT and a borrowing of 19,762 WETH between 04:58 and 05:01 SGT on October 30, corresponding to 20:58–21:01 UTC on October 29. It attributes that position to a wallet in the cluster it was tracking. It says the first freeze followed at 05:42 SGT and the guardian executions continued until 07:04 SGT.

| Time on October 30, SGT | Event described by LlamaRisk |
|---|---|
| 04:58–05:01 | Tracked wallet supplied 60 million USDT and borrowed 19,762 WETH |
| 05:42 | First reserve-freeze execution |
| 07:04 | End of the reported guardian execution interval |
| 09:00 | Stated update time of the forum account |
The source's last-update label is 01:00 UTC, or 09:00 SGT. Its statements about the tracked position and subsequent interactions belong to that account's observation window. We are not treating them as a continuous live check of those wallets at publication time.
The chronology matters because the freeze was intended to prevent additional entry. It did not erase a position opened before the restriction. LlamaRisk describes the earlier USDT-backed WETH borrowing as remaining subject to normal liquidation. The response therefore combines a restriction on new activity with continued handling of obligations already on the books.
Odaily's earlier 07:39 SGT report relayed Aave Chan Initiative founder Marc Zeller's assessment of the position and available WETH liquidity. Its figures were another snapshot, and the item attributes the assessment to him. A reader should not combine its debt valuation with a later collateral valuation and present the resulting ratio as a new live measurement. Read the earlier attributed assessment.
Frozen is different from paused
LlamaRisk explicitly says no market had been paused in the response it describes. For the affected reserves, a freeze stops new supply and new borrowing. Repayment, withdrawal and liquidation continue. Those separate operations are the practical meaning of the measure, rather than a blanket statement that everything on Aave stopped.
For an existing borrower, the consequential restriction is on adding collateral. LlamaRisk says that because frozen reserves accept no new supply, users cannot supply extra collateral to improve a position's health factor. During the freeze, it identifies repayment as the available way to raise that measure. A plan that depends on topping up later needs to be checked against the actual reserve state.
A supplier faces a different question: whether the withdrawal they want can execute against the position and available liquidity. An operation being enabled does not guarantee an arbitrary withdrawal amount for every account at every moment. The source describes withdrawals continuing; it does not provide a lasting guarantee for each reserve's cash balance.
Liquidations continuing also means the restriction does not give existing borrowers a holiday from changing collateral values or debt. LlamaRisk says it was monitoring the relevant Chainlink price feeds, which it reported were working normally. That assessment is attributed to the provider and its update time; it is not a fresh audit of all feeds by NexuAlpha.
What the reported USDT position does and does not show
In the forum update, LlamaRisk values the tracked position at about $59.9 million of USDT collateral against about $43.8 million of debt. It calls the position overcollateralised and says normal liquidation remains available. The borrowing quantity of 19,762 WETH and the dollar value of the debt measure different things: the dollar figure can change with the valuation time.
LlamaRisk also states that this was the actor's only Aave position across the networks and versions it monitored, with no further Aave interaction after 05:01 SGT in that account. Those are findings of its monitoring. They should not be expanded into a claim that no related wallet could ever interact again or that a subsequent reopening is already safe.
The provider concludes that the position does not put Aave suppliers at risk. We report that as its assessment. The opened materials do not let us turn the statement into a guarantee about every supplier, asset or future price path. For an individual user, the observable questions remain the reserve restriction, the position's current health and the liquidity available for the intended operation.
Why Horizon was left open
LlamaRisk names the Horizon real-world-asset market as an exception because its collateral is permissioned and, in its assessment, could not be used by the tracked actor. That is a specific explanation for a specific market. It does not mean all markets with real-world assets were exempt or that the exception applies to every tokenized product.
The V4 coverage itself includes a Base tokenized-equities spoke in the provider's list. Product labels alone therefore do not tell a user whether a reserve falls within the restriction. Check the deployment and reserve named in the account you actually use. Do not infer an exemption from an asset being described as a stock, a stablecoin or an RWA.
Why a long freeze changes the reopening decision
LlamaRisk says markets would remain frozen until the actor's funds stopped moving and there was more clarity about containment on Binance's side. It then planned to work with other providers on a staged unfreeze. The account does not give a calendar deadline for that sequence.
The provider identifies utilisation as another issue during a prolonged freeze. New supply cannot enter a frozen reserve. Large withdrawals can therefore raise utilisation and borrowing rates, while repayments relieve that pressure. The order of reopening matters because it determines where new supply and borrowing can resume. A reopening of one deployment would not, by itself, establish that every other deployment had reopened.
These are lending-market mechanics, separate from an issuer blocking particular stablecoin addresses. The action described here changes which Aave operations a reserve accepts. It should not be read as a claim that the guardians recovered assets from Binance or that a stablecoin issuer released previously restricted funds. A recovery claim needs its own transaction or official confirmation.
Market pressure is a separate measurement
NexuAlpha's liquidation board at 16:41 SGT showed about $776 million of observed Binance and OKX futures liquidations over the preceding 24 hours, with about $657 million in longs and $118 million in shorts. The same snapshot showed about $24.9 million over four hours. These are overlapping market windows, not amounts to add together or a measurement of the Aave position. See the liquidation board.
The figures show why users with leveraged positions have another task alongside following the security investigation. They do not establish that the Binance event caused every liquidation in the window. Keep exchange futures forced closures separate from liquidations of Aave lending positions. Our funding-rate board is another contract-specific market check; it is not a status page for reserve reopening or exchange withdrawals.
To check a reopening report, first identify the exact network, Aave version and reserve in your position. Next compare the operation you need with the dated guardian update: new supply, borrowing, repayment and withdrawal have different states under this measure. Record the update time and check the current official interface before signing. A report that one reserve reopened does not establish the state of another. For a pending Binance transfer, inspect your own account's transaction record and official service status. Do not follow unsolicited “Binance compensation” messages, connect a wallet to a recovery link or sign a request sent by a stranger.
The next useful update is a named reserve reopening, a changed monitored position or a revised containment assessment with its own observation time. A broad “unfrozen” headline without the deployment and operation leaves the main user question unanswered.
