$52M Liquidated in 10 Minutes: Why SOXL, SanDisk and SK Hynix Perps Crashed While Wall Street Was Closed
The short answer
Between 21:22 and 21:32 UTC on Saturday 17 October 2026 (05:22–05:32 SGT Sunday), about $51.6 million of leveraged positions in chip-stock perpetual contracts were force-closed across crypto exchanges, according to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk and Crypto Briefing. Roughly $38 million of that came from longs. The underlying shares were not trading at all: US markets were shut for the weekend, so the contracts had no live stock price to anchor to and moved only on crypto-exchange order flow.
SOXL, the 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF, took the biggest hit at about $12.7 million, followed by SanDisk (SNDK) and SK Hynix at roughly $10.8 million each. On Binance, SNDKUSDT fell from 1,296 to a low of 1,215 and SOXLUSDT from 93.5 to 86.7 within eight minutes, then recovered most of the move. If you hold stock perpetuals over a weekend, this is the risk you are paid funding to carry. Our tokenized stocks hub lists which exchange offers which contract and in which hours.

What happened, minute by minute
The timeline below combines CoinDesk's reconstruction (based on Tread.fi chief executive David Jeong's trade review) with the public 1-minute candles we pulled from the Binance Futures API and the Hyperliquid API on 18 October.
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Time (UTC, 17 Oct) | What the data shows |
|---|---|
| 21:21:59 | First large SanDisk and Micron sell orders hit Binance, according to Jeong's review quoted by CoinDesk |
| 21:22 | Binance SNDKUSDT prints a 1-minute candle from 1,294.25 down to 1,253.32 on $21.9 million of quote volume; the same minute on Hyperliquid's xyz:SNDK market runs 1,292.1 to 1,253.1 |
| 21:22 | Binance SOXLUSDT drops from 93.25 to 90.05 in one minute on $16.5 million of volume |
| 21:25–21:28 | Second leg: SNDKUSDT prints its low of 1,215.35 and SOXLUSDT its low of 86.73 at 21:30 |
| 21:22–21:32 | CoinGlass counts about $51.6 million of liquidations across chip-linked contracts, about $38 million of it longs |
| 21:33–21:40 | Prices bounce: SNDKUSDT back above 1,245, SOXLUSDT back near 88 |
From the 21:15 high to the 21:28 low, SNDKUSDT on Binance fell 6.3 percent and SOXLUSDT fell 7.2 percent. Hyperliquid's SNDK contract fell 6.1 percent over the same window. By Sunday 12:50 UTC, Binance showed SNDKUSDT at 1,277 (down 1.6 percent over 24 hours), SOXLUSDT at 92.77 (down 1.6 percent) and MUUSDT at 871.6 (down 1.0 percent), so most of the damage was absorbed by the traders who were liquidated, not by anyone who simply held through it.
Which contracts were hit
Crypto Briefing's breakdown of the CoinGlass figures gives the split by ticker:
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Contract | Liquidations (USD) |
|---|---|
| SOXL (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3x) | about 12.73 million |
| SNDK (SanDisk) | about 10.85 million |
| SK Hynix (SKHY and SKHYNIX tickers combined) | about 10.72 million |
| SOXS (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3x) | about 9.07 million |
| MU (Micron) | about 4.40 million |
Longs were 73.8 percent of the total. Note that SOXS, the inverse product, also appears on the list: when prices snapped back after the flush, shorts on the bear ETF and longs on the bull ETF were both squeezed. A contract that already embeds 3x daily leverage, traded with another 10x to 100x of exchange leverage on top, has very little room before the liquidation price is reached.

Stock perpetuals are USDT-margined contracts that track a share or ETF price and trade around the clock on crypto exchanges. During US market hours the index price follows the real quote. On a Saturday night there is no real quote. CoinDesk reports that Trade XYZ, the builder of the chip markets on Hyperliquid, lets trading on its own platform set the reference price until outside quotes return, which only happens when US markets open on Monday.
Two things followed from that. First, the order books were thin: Jeong's data shows Binance handled about $21.9 million of SanDisk volume in the first minute against $3.1 million on Trade XYZ, and roughly ten addresses opened shorts across six chip contracts on Hyperliquid within 1.8 seconds of the first Binance sells. Second, the backdrop was already weak. Blockonomi notes semiconductors had fallen for eight straight sessions, the worst streak since 2008, and CoinDesk points to new competition for memory makers from China's CXMT. A crowded long position in a sector that had been bleeding all week met a $2 million exit and a coordinated short burst with nobody on the bid.
Monday's open will show how far the weekend prices strayed from the real shares. If the perps overshot, the gap closes against whoever is still positioned the wrong way; funding on these contracts resets as soon as a live index returns.
Where these contracts trade
We checked the public instrument lists on 18 October rather than relying on marketing pages:
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Venue | Chip-stock perpetuals listed (USDT or USDC margined) | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Binance Futures | SOXLUSDT (listed 15 May 2026), SNDKUSDT and MUUSDT (listed 7 April 2026), tagged TradFi perpetuals | Binance Futures exchangeInfo API |
| Bitget USDT-M Futures | SOXLUSDT, SNDKUSDT, MUUSDT, SKHYNIXUSDT, SKHYUSDT, DRAMUSDT | Bitget contracts API |
| OKX | SOXL-USDT-SWAP, SNDK-USDT-SWAP, MU-USDT-SWAP, SKHYNIX-USDT-SWAP, SKHY-USDT-SWAP | OKX public instruments API |
| Hyperliquid (Trade XYZ markets) | xyz:SOXL, xyz:SNDK, xyz:MU, xyz:SKHX, xyz:SKHY, xyz:DRAM | Hyperliquid info API |
So the same weekend flush could reach a trader on any of the four. The difference is in the reference-price rules, the leverage caps and the liquidity at 05:00 SGT on a Sunday. Our hub comparison of stock tokens and stock perpetuals explains why a 1:1 stock token cannot be liquidated while a perpetual can.
What to do now if you trade stock perps
- Know when the index is real. Check the contract specification for how the index is built outside US hours. If the venue uses its own last traded price, your liquidation price can be hit by crypto-exchange flow alone.
- Cut leverage on leveraged ETFs. SOXL and SOXS already move three times the sector. Treat 5x on SOXL as 15x on chips.
- Set the stop before Friday's close, not after. Weekend gaps on these contracts are not gaps; they are continuous prints that trigger stops and liquidations in real time.
- Watch funding and open interest, not just price. Our liquidations board shows Binance and OKX forced orders by symbol; a cluster of chip tickers at the top is the signal that leverage is being flushed.
- Size for the Monday reopen. Whatever the weekend price did, the real share quote returns at 13:30 UTC Monday. Position so that a 5 percent gap either way does not end the trade for you.
If you want to keep trading chip-stock perps with the fee working in your favour, Bitget lists all five of the tickers in this story (SOXL, SNDK, MU, SK Hynix, DRAM) as USDT-margined perpetuals, and the Bitget profile shows the current terms; registering with code nexu888 attaches the NexuAlpha fee rebate to the account. For the on-chain version of the same markets, Hyperliquid runs the Trade XYZ chip contracts; sign up with code NEXU888. Check the tokenized stocks hub first for hours and leverage on each venue.

Have prices recovered? Mostly. On Sunday afternoon UTC, Binance showed SNDKUSDT and SOXLUSDT down about 1.6 percent over 24 hours, far less than the 6 to 7 percent intraday drop.
Which exchanges list these contracts? Binance, Bitget, OKX and Hyperliquid, according to their public instrument APIs on 18 October.
What we could not verify
CoinGlass's own dashboard was not fetched directly; its figures come from CoinDesk and Crypto Briefing, which agree with each other. The identity of the trader whose roughly $2 million SanDisk exit started the move is not public. Crypto Briefing's article gives the window as 05:22 to 05:32 UTC; CoinDesk, Blockonomi and the Binance candles place it at 21:22 to 21:32 UTC on 17 October, which is 05:22 Beijing and Singapore time on 18 October.
