Best Crypto Exchange for Beginners in 2026: Five Exchanges Compared on Fees, ID Checks and the Easiest First Purchase
The short answer
The best crypto exchange for a beginner is a large one that is legally open to residents of your country, lets you pay in your own currency, and shows the full cost before you press confirm. Among the five exchanges whose fees we checked on official pages, Bitget and OKX are the easiest starting points for most readers outside the US, because both offer a fee-free Convert screen and a P2P market with no trading fee, while Kraken suits people in the countries its referral programme covers but charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker on its first spot tier.

What "beginner-friendly" actually means
Most "best exchange" lists rank on token count or trading volume. A first-time buyer does not need 1,500 coins or deep futures books. You need five things, in this order:
1. The exchange accepts residents of your country. Check the entity and licence on our licence directory before anything else. A sign-up that works today can be closed later if your country is not served. 2. A way to pay in your local currency. That can be a bank deposit, a card, or a P2P market where other users sell you USDT for your currency through escrow. Our lesson on first deposit paths explains each route in plain words. 3. A buy screen that shows the total. Convert-style screens quote one price and one amount; you either accept or wait for a new quote. 4. A clear identity check (KYC). Every exchange in the table below asks for ID before deposits or trading. Read who gets your ID and why so the request does not surprise you. 5. Basic account security. An authenticator app, a withdrawal allowlist and an anti-phishing code are switched on in minutes.
The five exchanges side by side (checked October 2026)
Fees are the standard first-tier spot rates from each exchange's official fee page, read on 10 October 2026. New-user rewards are the per-user maximums on the official reward pages, read on 13 October 2026.
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Exchange | Spot fee (maker / taker) | Fee-free way to buy | New-user reward on the official page | Notes for beginners |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitget | 0.10% / 0.10% | Convert (fee-free); P2P (zero fees) | Up to 6,200 USDT: up to 6,000 USDT for depositing and trading within 7 days, plus a 200 USDT bonus for inviting one friend | Rewards must be claimed within 2 days after a 3-day review; sub-accounts are excluded |
| OKX | 0.08% / 0.10% | Convert (zero trading fees, no slippage); P2P (zero trading fees, 100+ payment methods) | Up to 520 USDT; KYC and tasks within 30 days of registration | Some regions excluded under its terms of service |
| Binance | 0.10% / 0.10% (25% off when paying in BNB) | No fee-free spot route listed in our data | Welcome vouchers are fee-rebate vouchers, not cash; long list of excluded countries | Referral sign-ups follow separate voucher rules |
| Bybit | 0.10% / 0.10% | No fee-free spot route listed in our data | Referral tiers: 50 USDT after a first trade of at least $50 within 14 days, then 100 + 100 USDT at $500 and $10,000 volume within 30 days | The code must be entered at sign-up |
| Kraken | 0.40% / 0.80% (tier 1) | None | $20 for a referred new user in eligible countries | Card deposits do not count toward the referral |
Two numbers make the difference clear. A $100 purchase at a 0.10% taker fee costs $0.10. The same purchase at Kraken's 0.80% tier-1 taker rate costs $0.80. A card purchase is another case: Bitget's own card guide shows an example fee of 1.8%, which is $1.80 on $100, before any spread.
Why Convert and P2P matter so much for a first purchase
Check regional eligibility and account terms
Open →Check regional eligibility and account terms
Open →Convert is the closest thing to a shop counter. You type "100 USDT to BTC", the screen quotes a price, and you accept. Bitget describes its Convert as fee-free and refreshes the quote automatically, six times every eight seconds. OKX lists Convert with "zero trading fees, no slippage". The cost is hidden in the quote: Bitget's own launch note says the Convert price is slightly higher than the order-book price when you buy and slightly lower when you sell. On small amounts that difference is usually smaller than a card fee.
P2P is how most people outside Europe and the US get local money into an exchange. You pick a seller, pay them by bank transfer or e-wallet, and the exchange holds the seller's USDT in escrow until they confirm payment. Bitget states its P2P has zero fees and requires KYC plus a bound phone number; its currency list includes IDR, PHP, INR, NGN, BRL, MXN, TRY and dozens more. Our step-by-step Bitget P2P guide covers appeals and limits.
Spot is the order book. It is cheaper than a card and lets you set your own price with a limit order, but the screen has more buttons. Most beginners do one or two Convert purchases, then move to spot once they understand market and limit orders. Our lesson on the first spot trade walks through that switch.
Your first purchase in seven steps
1. Open the exchange from a link you trust, not from an ad or a direct message. Our check for finding the official exchange site takes one minute. 2. Register with email or phone and set a password. Enter a referral code now if you plan to use one; most exchanges do not accept it later. 3. Complete KYC with an ID document and a selfie. Bitget says review usually takes about 60 minutes. 4. Switch on an authenticator app before you deposit anything. 5. Fund the account: P2P in your currency, a bank deposit if your currency is supported, or a card for speed. 6. Buy with Convert for the first time. Write down the amount you paid and what you received. 7. Decide where the coins live. Leaving a small amount on the exchange is normal; larger amounts belong in a wallet you control.
The free seven-lesson path at /start follows the same order, one short lesson per step.
Mistakes we see beginners make
- Paying card fees on every purchase. Card is fine once. After that, P2P or a bank deposit plus Convert is usually cheaper.
- Opening futures in week one. Perpetual futures use leverage and can liquidate your position. None of the welcome rewards above require you to start there, even if some tasks mention them.
- Missing reward deadlines. Bitget counts 7 days from registration; OKX counts 30 days; Bybit counts 14 days for the first trade. Put the date in your calendar on day one.
- Answering "support" in DMs. Real exchange staff never ask for your password, 2FA code or seed phrase. Our scam red flags lesson lists the common scripts.
How to act on this
If you live in a country Bitget serves, the shortest route is to open the Bitget profile, sign up with code nexu888, finish KYC and buy your first USDT through P2P or Convert, inside the 7-day deposit-and-trade window that starts at registration. If you would rather start on OKX, register with code nexu888 from the OKX profile and use its zero-fee Convert screen; then compare both on Bitget vs OKX before you decide where to keep trading. Live welcome offers are tracked on /activities.
What we could not verify
Bybit's separate welcome-gift amount could not be read from its campaign page, so only the referral tiers appear above. Binance's welcome-voucher eligibility for referral sign-ups depends on the referral mode, so we do not list a voucher amount.
Quick answers
Which exchange is easiest for a complete beginner? For most countries outside the US, Bitget or OKX: both have a fee-free Convert screen and a P2P market with no trading fee.
Do I need ID to buy crypto on an exchange? Yes. All five exchanges above ask for identity verification before deposits or trading.
What is the cheapest way to make my first purchase? Usually P2P in your local currency followed by Convert or a spot order. A card is fastest but carries a fee; Bitget's example shows 1.8%.
Can I add a referral code after I sign up? Usually no. Bybit says the code must be entered at registration, so add it on the sign-up form.
Is a bigger welcome bonus always better? No. The headline is a maximum per user. Read the deposit and trading volume needed and the deadline before you count on it.
