Crypto Liquidations Today: Shorts Took 85% of $11.9 Million as Funding Turned Negative With Bitcoin at $83,000 (11 October 2026)

5 min

The short answer

In the 24 hours to 09:13 UTC on 11 October 2026, NexuAlpha's liquidation tracker recorded $11.87 million of forced closures across the venues and contracts it follows, and $10.11 million of that, about 85%, came from short positions. The largest single order was a $1.45 million SOL short on OKX. At the same time, funding on Binance's ETH perpetual settled at about −0.012% twice in a row, meaning short sellers were paying longs. The picture is a reversal of Thursday, when more than $1 billion of mostly long positions were wiped out: after the long flush, traders leaned short into a flat market and those shorts are now the side getting squeezed. These are lower-bound figures from our own feed, not a market total.

What our tracker recorded

NexuAlpha's liquidation tracker listens to Binance's USDT-margined force-order stream (which publishes at most one order per symbol per second) and to OKX liquidation orders for BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and DOGE. That makes every number below a floor: the real market-wide total is higher.

By contract, SOL accounted for $6.47 million, ETH $3.83 million, BTC $0.98 million, DOGE $0.43 million and XRP $0.17 million in the 24-hour window. More than half of all tracked liquidations were SOL.

The largest single liquidation was a $1,452,978 SOL short on OKX at 14:29 UTC on 10 October. Binance's hourly SOL futures candle for that hour shows the price moving from $109.87 to a high of $110.75, a rise of about 0.8% (our arithmetic). A position of that size being closed by a move under 1% tells you how much leverage was in it.

The hourly history also shows the market swinging both ways overnight: the hour to 04:03 UTC on 11 October recorded $858,621 of liquidations, all longs, and the next hour recorded $779,055, of which $696,047 were shorts.

Funding flipped negative on ETH and BTC

Funding is the periodic payment between long and short holders of a perpetual future. When it is negative, shorts pay longs, which usually means short positions are crowded. Binance's settled rates for the last six eight-hour periods:

11 Oct 00:00−0.0027%−0.0118%

Our funding-rate board showed the next ETH payment at −0.0101% on Binance and −0.0025% on OKX at 09:13 UTC, with BTC slightly negative on both. An ETH rate of −0.012% per eight hours is small in cash terms, about $1.20 per $10,000 of position per payment, but the direction matters: it is the first negative run in this table and it came while ETH traded flat near $2,505.

Binance open interest was $7.72 billion for BTC (up 0.3% in 24 hours) and $5.81 billion for ETH (down 0.93%), so positions were not being added aggressively. The change was in which side was paying, not in how much was open.

How we got here: Thursday's long flush

The short tilt follows a sharp move the other way. Cointelegraph, citing CoinGlass, reported $1.09 billion of crypto liquidations in the 24 hours to 10:00 UTC on Friday 9 October, $1.05 billion of them longs, after Bitcoin fell to $80,350 on Bitstamp, its lowest since 18 September. CryptoQuant data cited in the same report showed short-term holders sending more than 55,000 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday.

Funds were selling too. According to Farside Investors data reported by Cointelegraph, US spot Bitcoin ETFs had net outflows of $484.9 million on 7 October, the largest since 25 June, and $244.1 million on 8 October. October outflows reached $407.4 million for Bitcoin ETFs and $578.9 million for Ether ETFs, $986.3 million combined, with Ether funds on an eight-session losing streak at that point. Decrypt tied the selling to the macro backdrop: a 30-year Treasury yield near 5.7%, the highest since 2002, Brent crude near $100, and Fed minutes showing most officials expect another rate hike this year.

Bitcoin has since steadied. Our market feed showed BTC at $83,069 and ETH at $2,505 at 09:13 UTC on 11 October, both up less than 0.4% over 24 hours.

What to watch

  • US inflation data on 14 October, which Bitfinex Alpha, quoted by Cointelegraph, flagged as the next scheduled catalyst.
  • Whether ETH funding stays negative. A run of negative prints in a flat market means shorts are paying to wait; if price rises, they are the ones forced to buy back.
  • ETF flows. Several days of outflows were part of Thursday's drop; a return to inflows would remove one source of selling.
  • The Fed meeting on 27–28 October, which Decrypt notes is the next scheduled decision.

How to act on this

Two things from today's data are practical. First, a $1.45 million position was closed by a move of less than 1%: whatever your direction, lower leverage keeps you out of the liquidation table. Second, when funding turns negative, holding a short costs money every eight hours, so check the funding board before you hold one overnight. Trading fees are the cost you can cut: on OKX, a regular account pays 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on USDT perpetuals, and registering with code nexu888 returns 40% of trading fees, settled hourly. Compare venues on /rates and see the OKX profile. For how funding is calculated, read our funding rate explainer.
