OKX Shield Reaches the US: Up to $500,000 Against Account Takeover, and What You Must Switch On

6 min

The short answer

OKX launched OKX Shield for eligible US customers on 20 October 2026. It offers up to $100,000 of protection by default, $250,000 for VIP 1 to 3 and $500,000 for VIP 4 and above, if an unauthorized person takes over your account and moves your assets out. There is no subscription or activation fee, but Shield does not turn on by itself: you must pass an eligibility check and a device-health check, then enable a passkey, large-withdrawal protection, web-withdrawal protection and multi-factor authentication. Reports also say that payouts are discretionary, so treat it as a safety net, not as insurance you can claim by right.

What OKX announced

OKX describes Shield as a protection programme for account takeovers, meaning cases where a third party gains control of an account and transfers assets out. The covered routes named by OKX are credential phishing, malware and SIM swaps. A SIM swap is when a criminal moves your phone number to a card they hold, so the SMS codes meant for you reach them instead.

The US launch follows a debut in the European Economic Area on 22 September 2026, where the same three tiers were set at 100,000, 250,000 and 500,000 euros. In the US the figures are in dollars. OKX says it serves more than 150 million customers worldwide, and the former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, now a director on OKX's board, publicly backed the programme as a way of building trust while financial markets change.

The limits by tier are easy to misread, so here they are side by side.

Qualifying VIP 1 to 3Up to $250,000
Qualifying VIP 4 and aboveUp to $500,000

The headline of $500,000 therefore applies only at the top VIP tiers. Most ordinary accounts fall under the first row.

The six things you have to do

OKX states plainly that Shield does not activate automatically. According to its announcement, an eligible customer must complete six actions and then accept the terms and press Activate:

  1. Pass the account-eligibility check.
  2. Pass the device-health check for the current device and any linked devices, which looks for malware, rooting or jailbreaking.
  3. Enable a passkey.
  4. Enable Large Withdrawal Protection.
  5. Enable Web Withdrawal Protection.
  6. Set up multi-factor authentication for all supported activities.

Protection stays on only while these safeguards remain in place. The European press release adds the practical shape of these settings: a passkey with facial verification for large withdrawals, and web withdrawals switched off. In other words, the programme asks you to make the account harder to drain before it promises to cover a drain.

What is not covered, and what is discretionary

Two points decide how much comfort Shield gives you.

First, the payout is discretionary. Crypto Briefing reports that OKX decides whether to pay a claim and is not contractually bound to pay. A discretionary promise can still be valuable, but it is not the same as a policy with a fixed claims process.

Second, the exclusions. The reported list covers transactions you authorized yourself, trading losses and problems tied to API keys. The first one matters most for scams: if you are tricked into sending funds yourself, that is an authorized transaction and falls outside an account-takeover programme by its nature. OKX also allows one approved claim per verified identity across all OKX entities, so it is a single-use cushion, not a recurring one.

The full eligibility conditions and the complete exclusion list sit in the Shield Terms and Conditions, which OKX links from its page. We could not see those terms in the sources we read, so read them in your account before relying on any particular scenario.

Why this matters beyond OKX

Account takeover is the quiet loss in crypto. Price crashes are visible to everyone; a drained account usually involves one person and a stolen session. By attaching money to the claim that its own settings work, OKX is turning the usual advice into a condition: if you follow the safeguards, the platform stands behind them.

The settings are worth copying on any exchange, whether or not a programme pays out. A passkey cannot be typed into a phishing page the way a password and SMS code can. Large-withdrawal protection adds a second hurdle on the transfers that hurt. Blocking web withdrawals removes the easiest path for a thief who stole a browser session. And a device-health check recognises that malware on your phone or laptop defeats every other control.

How to switch Shield on

Open the OKX app or website while logged in and look for OKX Shield in the security area. Work through the checklist in order. Because the device-health check covers linked devices as well, remove old phones and browsers you no longer use first, otherwise one forgotten device can fail the whole check. Finish by reading and accepting the terms, then select Activate OKX Shield. Come back and check the status after software updates, since the protection depends on the safeguards staying enabled.

If you hold balances on more than one OKX entity, remember the one-claim limit applies across all of them, so spreading funds does not multiply cover.

How it fits with OKX's other safeguards

Shield sits alongside other safeguards OKX already describes, such as separation of customer funds and monthly Proof of Reserves reports. Those address reserves and custody; Shield addresses the case where your own login is the weak point. It is not a guarantee against exchange failure, and OKX does not present it as one.

What we could not verify

We could not confirm in which other countries Shield is offered beyond the United States and the European Economic Area, so check the product page for your region. OKX's page did not state how long claims take, and the exclusions beyond the reported list are in terms we did not read in full.

Then turn on the safeguards before the first deposit.
