Stablecoin Transfers Hit $891 Billion in Q3 2026, but the Market Is Still About $301 Billion: What That Gap Means

5 min

The short answer

Stablecoins moved $891 billion in adjusted transfer volume in the third quarter of 2026, more than four times the level of early 2023, according to a report commissioned by Coinbase and conducted by The Block Research. Yet the total supply of stablecoins has barely changed: about $301 billion on October 20, 2026, roughly 0.6% below the same day a year earlier. In plain terms, the same dollars are being used far more often, not many more dollars being created. For a trader or saver, that means stablecoins are becoming payment plumbing, while the size of the market, and the share held by Tether and Circle, matters more than headline volume.

What the report found

Cointelegraph's summary of the report gives the main numbers. Adjusted transfer volume averaged more than $400 million an hour in the quarter, and 73% of screened volume happened outside US banking hours, including nights, weekends and holidays. That last figure is the practical argument for stablecoins: they settle when banks are closed.

Adoption by companies is rising too. Seven of the 10 largest US banks have tested stablecoins or tokenized deposits for settlement. Among mid-market companies doing cross-border business, 30% use or pilot stablecoins, up from 10% in 2024, and business-to-business payment volume rose 36% year over year. The report counted 293 million blockchain addresses holding stablecoins, but its authors cautioned that an address is not the same as a person.

Why volume and supply have split

Transfer volume counts every movement of a coin, so a single dollar of USDT that changes hands ten times in a quarter counts ten times. Market capitalization counts only how many coins exist. When volume quadruples while supply stays flat, the coins are circulating faster: more payments, more exchange flows, more settlement between firms.

We checked supply ourselves against DefiLlama's stablecoin data, fetched on October 21, 2026. It shows a combined supply near $304 billion across all tracked stablecoins, a slightly different scope from the $301 billion in the report, so the two should not be compared to the dollar. The same dataset shows the two largest coins roughly steady over the past month: USDT at about $182.8 billion against $183.2 billion a month earlier, and USDC at about $72.2 billion against $74.4 billion. USDS is at about $6.8 billion and DAI about $4.8 billion. In other words, there is no sign of a rush into new stablecoin supply.

Forecasts are cooling as well. Cointelegraph notes that one analyst pushed back its forecast for the market to reach $2 trillion from 2028 to 2030, citing slower supply growth, while another projects $1.9 trillion by 2030 in its base case. Those are projections from the sources, not our view.

What the report does not prove

The report also estimates that moving 80% of international transactions onto stablecoin networks could add $155 billion to global GDP a year and free about $3 trillion in liquidity held by banks. Cointelegraph points out that these numbers come from hypothetical adoption scenarios, not observed gains, and that researchers acknowledged wider stablecoin use could reduce bank lending. Treat them as an argument, not a result.

A separate survey from the National Cryptocurrency Association, cited in the same article, found that 42% of US adults would be more likely to open an account with a bank offering crypto services, and 18% would like to buy or use stablecoins through their primary bank. It also found that 64% said their bank, credit union or adviser had never raised crypto. That is survey opinion, and it shows interest rather than behavior.

What it means for you

  • If you hold stablecoins as cash: a flat market cap with heavy use means the coins you hold are busy, not scarce. Check which issuer you rely on, since USDT and USDC together are about $255 billion of the supply in the DefiLlama data, roughly 84% of its total by our arithmetic.
  • If you move money across borders or between exchanges: the 73% off-hours figure is the point. Transfers on a Sunday are the same as on a Tuesday, which is why many traders park funds in stablecoins between trades.
  • If you trade: volume statistics describe payments, not price direction. A flat supply does not tell you whether crypto prices rise or fall, and we make no prediction.
  • If you are choosing a venue: look at which stablecoin pairs a platform lists and what each costs to trade. Our funding rates page and the exchange comparison tools show current fees and perp funding side by side.

A simple way to act on this: keep working capital in the stablecoin your venue trades most deeply, and keep trading costs low. If you want a venue with deep USDT markets, sign up to Bitget with code nexu888 through NexuAlpha and you get a fee rebate on your trades; the Bitget profile lists current fees.

What we could not verify

We read Cointelegraph's account of the report, not the report itself, so the methodology behind "adjusted" volume and "screened" volume is not something we can describe. The $301.42 billion market cap is Cointelegraph's figure and differs from our DefiLlama total because of scope. We found no figure for how much of the $891 billion is exchange trading versus payments.

Quick answers

How much did stablecoins move in Q3 2026? $891 billion in adjusted transfer volume, more than four times the level of early 2023.

How big is the stablecoin market? About $301 billion on October 20, 2026, according to Cointelegraph, and about $304 billion across all tracked coins in DefiLlama's data on October 21.

Is the market growing? Not much. The October 20 figure was about 0.6% lower than a year earlier, even as transfers quadrupled.

Why does 73% off-hours volume matter? It shows stablecoins are used when banks are closed, which is their main advantage for payments.

Does this predict crypto prices? No. The sources describe payments and supply, not price direction.

Which coins dominate? USDT (about $182.8 billion) and USDC (about $72.2 billion) in DefiLlama's data.
