Binance vs Kraken (2026): Fees, Country Availability and Which One to Pick

6 min

The short answer

Binance is the cheaper exchange for spot trading: a regular account pays 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, against 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker on Kraken Pro's first fee tier, so a $1,000 market buy costs about $1 on Binance and $8 on Kraken Pro. Kraken is the one to pick if you live in the United States (except Maine and New York) or want a venue that publishes its licences country by country, because its own support pages list exactly who it serves and with which limits.

Fees side by side

All rates below are the standard first-tier numbers on each exchange's official fee pages. Binance figures come from its spot and futures fee schedules (checked 10 October 2026); Kraken figures come from its fee schedule page, read again on 14 October 2026.

Perpetual futures maker / taker0.02% / 0.05% (USDⓈ-M), 10% off with BNB0.02% / 0.05% on Kraken Pro futures tier 1; 0.25% to open and 0.25% to close on in-app Perps

The spot gap is the headline. Kraken's tier ladder narrows it only after a lot of volume: the taker fee drops to 0.38% at $10,000 of 30-day spot volume and does not reach Binance's 0.10% until tier 12, which requires $10 million of spot volume. Kraken also says instant-buy volume does not count toward that 30-day volume, so buying through the simple app screen never moves you down the ladder.

Perpetual futures are a tie on paper at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. The catch is eligibility: Kraken's own regulatory page says retail clients in the UK and all clients in Canada cannot trade derivatives on Kraken, so the tie only matters where both products are open to you.

What a $1,000 purchase actually costs

Our arithmetic, using only the published rates above:

  • Binance spot, market order: 0.10% of $1,000 = $1.00. Paying the fee in BNB cuts it to $0.75.
  • Kraken Pro spot, market order (tier 1): 0.80% = $8.00. A limit order that rests on the book pays the 0.40% maker rate, $4.00.
  • Kraken app instant buy: 1% = $10.00, plus the spread built into the quoted price. Kraken says the spread varies with volatility, asset, order size and account status.
  • Kraken+ members pay no instant-buy trading fee on the first $10,000 a month in major currencies, but Kraken notes the spread and card-processing fees still apply, and the waiver does not cover Kraken Pro.

If you trade a few hundred dollars a month, the difference is a few dollars. If you trade several thousand a month with market orders, Binance's flat 0.10% saves real money, and the gap is wider still when Kraken's app is used instead of Kraken Pro.

Who can use each exchange

This is where Kraken earns its place. Its "Where is Kraken licensed or regulated" page (updated 30 September 2026) spells out the rules by region:

  • United States: Kraken serves US residents except those in Maine and New York. US customers can only deposit USD, and a list of tokens is restricted for US accounts. Stock trading runs through Kraken Securities LLC, an SEC-registered broker-dealer and FINRA/SIPC member.
  • European Economic Area: services run through Irish entities licensed by the Central Bank of Ireland, including a MiCA licence to operate a crypto trading platform. EEA customers cannot deposit or trade USDT and a list of other tokens.
  • United Kingdom: Kraken is FCA-registered for crypto. Every newly verified UK retail account has a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period before it can trade, and UK retail clients cannot trade derivatives.
  • Canada: Kraken operates as a restricted dealer; Canadian clients cannot use margin or derivatives, and USDT is among the assets they cannot deposit, hold or trade.

Binance publishes its eligibility rules in its Terms of Use, which we could not load for this check. What its own futures FAQ does confirm is that, under MiCA, "unauthorized stablecoins are subject to certain restrictions" for EEA users. Before you register anywhere, confirm the entity that would hold your account in our licence directory.

On Binance, the common route for readers outside Europe and North America is P2P: other users sell you USDT for local currency while Binance holds the coins in escrow until the seller confirms your payment. Our step-by-step Binance P2P guide covers limits, payment proofs and what to do if a seller does not release.

Which one to pick

  • You trade often and price matters most: Binance. A flat 0.10% (0.075% with BNB) beats Kraken's 0.80% first-tier taker fee by a wide margin, and P2P lets you fund in many local currencies without a card.
  • You live in the US (outside Maine and New York): Kraken, because its US eligibility, deposit rails and broker entities are documented on its own pages.
  • You are in the EU and hold USDT: plan around the USDT restriction on Kraken, and expect similar stablecoin limits on Binance under MiCA; USDC or euro pairs are the practical route.
  • You are new and buy small amounts: either works, but avoid paying 1% on Kraken's instant-buy screen when the Kraken Pro order book costs 0.40%–0.80% and Binance spot costs 0.10%.

Our Binance profile and Kraken profile keep the checked fee rows and source links in one place, and the Binance vs Kraken page shows them side by side.

How to act on this

If the numbers point you to Binance, register through our Binance page with code 11350287 so part of the trading fees you pay comes back to you as a rebate, then switch on BNB fee payment for the extra 25% off spot. If you are in the US or simply prefer Kraken's licensing map, sign up from our Kraken profile with code 7f97gkqw and do your trading on Kraken Pro rather than the instant-buy screen.

What we could not verify

  • Binance's full list of supported and excluded countries (its Terms of Use page did not load for our fetcher).
  • The monthly price of a Kraken+ subscription.
  • Binance's exact deposit fees per local rail, which vary by country and payment partner.
