Bitcoin ETFs Just Took In $527 Million, the Biggest Day Since September: What It Means for the BTC Price

5 min

The short answer

US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in a net $526.7 million on Monday, October 19, 2026, their biggest single day since September 22, according to Farside Investors data reported by Cointelegraph. BlackRock's IBIT alone pulled in $665.2 million, more than the whole group's total, because Fidelity's FBTC lost $83.6 million and Grayscale's GBTC lost $54.9 million. It is a good day after two bad weeks, not yet a trend: the funds are still about $88 million in the red for October, and Bitcoin itself was trading near $81,800 on Tuesday morning, slightly lower on the day. Treat it as a sign that large buyers stepped back in at the $80,000 area, and watch whether the next three or four days confirm it.

What the numbers say

The flow data comes from Farside Investors, the tracker most newsrooms quote, and Cointelegraph reported the Monday figures on October 20. Here is the day in one table.

FundNet flow on Oct 19, 2026
BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT)+$665.2 million
Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC)-$83.6 million
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC)-$54.9 million
All other spot Bitcoin ETFsno net flow
Total, all US spot Bitcoin ETFs+$526.7 million

Two things stand out. First, concentration: one fund supplied more than 100% of the net inflow, so this was not broad buying across every provider. It looks like a single large allocation, or a burst of advisers and platforms that default to IBIT, rather than a rush into the whole category. Second, the timing. The funds had posted net weekly withdrawals in each of the previous two weeks, about $681 million two weeks ago and about $229 million last week, and Friday's session ended with $82.4 million of outflows. Monday reversed Friday's number more than six times over.

For context, the previous time a day was this large was September 22, when the funds took in $714.7 million. Our own sum of the daily figures published by the TFTC tracker shows the first 12 trading days of October at a net outflow of $617.2 million; adding Monday's $526.7 million gives about minus $90 million, which matches the roughly $88 million deficit Cointelegraph quotes. So October is still negative, and one strong day has repaired most of the damage but not all of it.

The price and the leverage on the day

On the NexuAlpha market feed at 06:43 UTC on October 20, Bitcoin traded at $81,839, down 1.17% over 24 hours; Ether was at $2,400.70, down 1.28%. So the biggest ETF inflow in four weeks did not push the price up the same day. Flows are reported after the US close, so they often trail the price, and Cointelegraph's market coverage noted Bitcoin was rejected near $83,000 as US bond yields moved higher.

Derivatives were more violent than the spot chart suggests. In the 24 hours to the same timestamp, the Binance and OKX liquidations we track show about $957 million of long positions and $719 million of short positions forced out, $1.68 billion in total. Both sides were hit, which is what you get when price whips between $81,000 and $83,000 and traders on each side use leverage. Our figure is a lower bound, since it covers only those two venues.

Funding was calm: on October 20 the Binance and OKX funding rate on BTC was about 0.0098% and 0.0088% per eight hours, a small positive number, so longs were paying shorts very little. That tells you the market is not crowded on one side. A crowded long market shows funding several times higher.

Ether ETFs went the other way

While Bitcoin funds collected cash, US spot Ether ETFs lost $103.3 million on the same day, $95.4 million of it from BlackRock's ETHA. They also lost about $320 million last week, their third straight week of net withdrawals. If you hold both coins, that gap matters: institutional demand is currently choosing Bitcoin over Ether, and Ether's 24-hour move of -1.28% matches that weaker bid.

How to read one big day

An inflow figure is not a price forecast, and we do not make one. What a day like this does tell you:

  • The sellers of last week may be done. Two weeks of net withdrawals followed by a large inflow is the pattern of selling pressure easing, though one day cannot prove it.
  • Watch the next five sessions, not today's. Farside updates each US evening. If IBIT keeps adding and FBTC and GBTC stop bleeding, the base is broadening. If Tuesday and Wednesday are flat or negative, Monday was a one-off.
  • Level matters more than flow. The $83,000 area rejected price this week and $80,000 is the round level traders are watching below. Those are better entry and exit markers than any single flow figure.
  • Do not size positions off a headline. Liquidations of $1.68 billion in a day, on a move of about 1%, show how little room 10x or 20x leverage leaves.

How to act on this

If you want Bitcoin exposure without a brokerage ETF, a spot buy on an exchange is the simplest route, and a partner venue can lower the cost: Bitget shows its fees on our profile, and signing up with code nexu888 adds a fee rebate. Keep leverage low or off while liquidations are this large. Our fee comparison lists what each venue charges, and the liquidations page shows the same 24-hour long-versus-short data live, so you can check conditions before placing an order. If your goal is long-term holding rather than trading, a few small buys spread across weeks beat one big order placed on a headline.
