CME Uniswap and Bitcoin Cash Futures Launch Today (19 October): Why UNI Fell 21% Into the Listing and What to Check Before You Trade

7 min

The short answer

CME Group lists Uniswap (UNI) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) futures today, 19 October 2026, with a standard contract of 10,000 UNI or 250 BCH and micro contracts of 1,000 UNI and 25 BCH, subject to the regulatory review CME flagged when it announced the products on 22 September. UNI did not rally into the listing: it closed at $8.92 on 4 October and traded at $7.00 on Sunday evening, a 21.5% drop in two weeks that is more than four times bitcoin's 4.9% decline over the same window. Perpetual funding on UNI is flat on Hyperliquid, OKX and Bitget, so the move looks like spot selling in a weak altcoin market rather than a crowded short, and the first thing to check before you trade is where UNI sits against its 14 October low of $6.78, not the headline.

What CME is actually listing

CME's 22 September announcement, distributed through PR Newswire, says the exchange will launch Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on 19 October "pending regulatory review", in response to what it calls strong client demand for regulated risk-management tools on high-liquidity altcoins. Both products come in two sizes:

ContractSizeNotional at Sunday's price
Uniswap futures10,000 UNIabout $70,000 at $7.00
Micro Uniswap futures1,000 UNIabout $7,000
Bitcoin Cash futures250 BCHabout $67,200 at $268.70
Micro Bitcoin Cash futures25 BCHabout $6,700

The notional figures are our arithmetic from the contract sizes and OKX spot prices at 16:55 UTC on 18 October. The two tokens join a single-asset suite that already covers Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui. CME says its crypto futures and options averaged 279,800 contracts a day in the first half of 2026, about $8.3 billion of notional value, with average open interest of 264,600 contracts or $15.4 billion. The five altcoin contracts added earlier in 2026 have traded more than $1 billion of notional value year to date, which gives a sense of how small the new listings are likely to be next to the bitcoin and ether contracts at the start.

Giovanni Vicioso, CME's global head of cryptocurrency products, framed the launch as a way for clients to "manage price risk and gain exposure to key crypto networks" inside a regulated marketplace that trades around the clock. The practical point for a retail reader is simpler: these contracts are built for institutions and brokers with a futures account. No UNI or BCH changes hands when a CME contract trades, so the listing does not touch tokens you hold in a wallet or on an exchange.

The price going into the listing

The "futures listing lifts the token" idea did not play out this time. Daily closes on OKX spot show UNI at $9.03 on 3 October and $8.92 on 4 October, then three straight red days: $8.67 on 5 October, $7.85 on 6 October and $7.32 on 7 October, an 18% fall in three sessions. The low of the whole stretch came on 14 October at $6.78, the day a hot US inflation print hit every risk asset, before a bounce to $7.64 on 15 October. The bounce faded: UNI closed 16 October at $7.11, 17 October at $7.01 and traded at $7.00 on Sunday evening.

CoinGecko puts the 14-day change at minus 22.5% and the 7-day change at minus 9.3%, with a market cap of about $4.37 billion, rank 26, and $299 million of 24-hour volume across venues. The comparison that matters is the rest of the market over the same two weeks, measured from 4 October closes to Sunday evening on OKX:

Asset4 October close18 OctoberChange
UNI$8.92$7.00minus 21.5%
BCH$317.50 (3 Oct)$268.70minus 15.4%
ETH$2,697$2,366minus 12.3%
BTC$85,266$81,058minus 4.9%

So UNI fell harder than bitcoin, harder than ether, and harder than the other token getting a CME contract. Part of that is ordinary altcoin beta in a market where bitcoin ETFs have now seen two straight weeks of net outflows. Part of it is the familiar pattern around scheduled listings: the announcement on 22 September was the news, and the three weeks between the announcement and the launch gave holders time to sell into it.

What the derivatives data says

If the drop were a crowded short, funding would be negative and a squeeze would be the risk on launch day. It is not. Snapshots taken at 16:55 UTC on 18 October:

  • Hyperliquid UNI perpetual: mark $7.00, open interest 9.57 million UNI, about $67 million, with hourly funding at 0.00125%, which is close to zero.
  • OKX UNI-USDT-SWAP: open interest 5.54 million UNI, about $38.7 million, with the current funding rate at 0.0040% for the next 8-hour payment.
  • Bitget UNIUSDT perpetual: funding 0.0074%, open interest 4.02 million UNI.

Across the three venues that is roughly $134 million of open interest at a flat rate. Nobody is paying much to be long or short, which usually means the move was driven by spot sellers rather than leverage. It also means there is no built-in squeeze to carry the price up when the CME contract opens; any Monday move has to come from new buying or selling.

The fundamentals behind the token

Uniswap's own numbers were the one thing improving while the price fell. DefiLlama's revenue series for the protocol shows $4.41 million in July, $9.33 million in August and $15.49 million in September 2026, the highest month in that data set, with $4.29 million in the first 18 days of October. Fees paid by traders across Uniswap deployments totalled about $115 million over the trailing 30 days as of 18 October. A record revenue month and a 21% price drop in the same quarter tells you the market is pricing macro and flows, not the protocol's income, at least for now.

What this means for you, and what to do now

If you hold UNI, nothing about your token changes today. What changes is that a regulated US venue now publishes a price for UNI that institutions can hedge against, which over time tends to tighten the gap between spot and derivatives prices and to make the token easier for funds to hold.

If you trade it, three checks are worth more than the launch headline. First, the levels: the 14 October low of $6.78 is the line the last two weeks have respected, the 15 October high of $7.64 capped the bounce, and $8.92 is where UNI stood before the slide started. Second, funding on the venue you use: a flat rate means a leveraged position costs little to hold but also that there is no crowd to squeeze. Third, open interest after the first CME session, which will show whether any institutional demand actually turned up.

If you want to position for the launch with leverage, Hyperliquid offers a UNI perpetual with up to 10x leverage and publishes funding every hour; sign up with code NEXU888 and read the Hyperliquid profile first. If you would rather buy spot and sit through the CME debut, Bitget lists UNI/USDT and USDT-margined perps and applies a fee rebate to accounts registered with code nexu888; the Bitget profile lists the current terms. Whatever venue you use, keep leverage low on a token that moved 18% in three sessions this month, and check the funding board and liquidations page before and after the first CME session rather than trading the announcement itself.

Quick answers

When do CME Uniswap and Bitcoin Cash futures start trading?

CME set 19 October 2026 as the launch date in its 22 September announcement, subject to regulatory review. The listing covers standard and micro contracts for both tokens.

How big is one CME Uniswap contract?

10,000 UNI for the standard contract and 1,000 UNI for the micro, roughly $70,000 and $7,000 at Sunday's price of $7.00. The Bitcoin Cash contracts are 250 BCH and 25 BCH.

Can a retail trader buy CME futures?

Only through a broker that offers CME futures. Most retail traders get the same exposure from perpetual contracts on crypto exchanges, which is why we list funding and open interest from Hyperliquid, OKX and Bitget rather than from CME.

Why is UNI down 21% in two weeks?

UNI fell from $8.92 on 4 October to $7.00 on 18 October while bitcoin fell 4.9% and ether 12.3%. The drop lines up with two weeks of bitcoin ETF outflows and a hot inflation print on 14 October, and funding data shows no crowded short, so it reads as spot selling in a weak market plus holders selling into a scheduled listing.

Does the CME listing change what UNI holders own?

No. CME futures are contracts between the exchange's clearing members. No tokens move on-chain when a contract trades, and the Uniswap protocol itself is unaffected.

What we could not verify

CME's own product and contract-specification pages were unreachable from our network on 18 October, so the contract sizes, launch date and volume figures above come from CME's press release as distributed by PR Newswire. The release says the launch is pending regulatory review; we found no later CME statement confirming or changing the date. Open interest and funding figures are venue snapshots at 16:55 UTC on 18 October and will have changed by the time you read this.
