Kraken Unified Wallet Reaches the EEA: Can Futures Losses Use Your Spot Balance?
The short answer
Yes. Kraken's October 16, 2026 announcement says Unified Wallet is available to EEA clients on Kraken Pro, and its default cross-margin mode lets a losing position draw on the entire eligible balance, including spot holdings. Switching removes transfers between eligible trading wallets, but it also changes which assets support your futures risk; regional rollout does not confirm that your individual account can access derivatives.

What changed for a retail account
The news is a change to collateral management. Kraken says eligible spot, margin, Earn and futures balances can work together, with margin calculated at account level. A trader holding an eligible asset can use it to back futures without first moving funds into a separate futures wallet. The announcement explicitly includes XAU among eligible collateral and says more than 40 cryptocurrencies, as well as USD and EUR, can serve as collateral.
That does not turn every balance into interchangeable cash. Kraken values each collateral asset using a collateral value ratio that reflects liquidity, and says these ratios can change with market conditions. A portfolio's headline market value and its adjusted margin value are different quantities. Looking only at the spot balance can therefore give an incomplete picture of capacity to support derivatives.
Start with the Kraken exchange profile for venue context, then examine the wallet and margin settings inside your own account. An exchange comparison does not establish personal product eligibility, current collateral parameters or the amount a specific position can lose.
Can a futures loss reach assets you intended to hold?
Kraken draws the distinction directly: with separate wallets, a futures loss cannot reach spot holdings; in Unified Wallet cross margin, a losing position can use the whole eligible balance. For someone who buys assets for long-term holding and separately experiments with futures, the switch changes a meaningful boundary.
Unrealized profit and loss from supported products also participates in the shared system. Kraken's support guide describes spot margin, Multi-M futures and options within the shared pool. It lists inverse futures and US TradFi futures as remaining separate. Do not treat the word “unified” as proof that every contract, wallet or account balance has been combined.
Cross margin may help an active trader reuse collateral across positions. It can also make an apparently unrelated position matter to the assets backing the account. Closing a profitable position or withdrawing eligible collateral can change the remaining margin picture. Review the account's resulting margin display rather than assuming that an action in one product leaves all other exposure unchanged.
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Decision | Separate wallets | Unified Wallet with cross margin |
|---|---|---|
| Funding a futures trade | Transfer collateral to the futures wallet | Eligible collateral is already shared |
| Spot holdings and futures losses | Product separation contains futures exposure within its wallet | A losing position can draw on eligible spot balances |
| Reading available margin | Examine the relevant wallet | Examine adjusted equity and account-level margin |
| Reversing the setup | Separate structure already applies | Close derivatives positions and orders before switching back |
The table describes Kraken's published wallet model. It does not say all separate-wallet trading is low risk, or that a displayed balance guarantees a position will survive market moves.
Cross and isolated are different decisions
Unified Wallet defaults to cross margin. The rollout announcement says isolated margin remains available for linear Multi-M futures contracts, while the support guide describes segregated margin for individual Multi-M positions. This is a product-specific alternative, not a promise that every instrument has an isolated setting.
If containing a single position's allocated collateral is the goal, inspect the contract's actual margin mode before placing the order. Do not infer isolation from the wallet name, an old screenshot, or a preference used on another contract. Kraken explains that cross-margin risk is measured at account level, while isolated margin segregates margin for an individual position.
The support guide also covers interest and automatic conversion when specified assets develop negative equity. This article does not quote a financing rate or assume which parameters apply to your account. Read the current product rules and account display before treating “no transfer needed” as “no additional cost or operational consequence.” For a separate comparison of market funding conditions, use the funding-rate board; those market readings cannot replace Kraken's wallet rules.
A checklist before the first switch
Make the decision before opening another trade, while the existing exposures are easy to review.
- Identify the assets you want to keep outside futures collateral. Compare that intention with Kraken's current eligible collateral list and the account's wallet setting.
- Inspect open derivatives positions and active orders. You can enable Unified Wallet without closing existing positions, but those commitments matter if you later want to reverse the change.
- Check the margin mode on each relevant contract. Distinguish default cross margin from the isolated option actually available for a supported linear Multi-M contract.
- Read collateral values and the account's margin figures. Do not assume every asset receives its full market value as collateral.
- Check the route back to separate wallets, including what happens to balances afterward. Plan the exit before pooling balances, especially when a long-term spot holding is involved.
This sequence is a way to compare your intended asset boundary with the published product mechanics. A missing setting, an eligibility message or an unclear margin display is a reason to resolve the account question before changing the setup.
How to enable it on web and app
On Kraken Pro web, the October 16 announcement directs users to the profile icon, then Settings. Under Trading platform, choose Edit, then Unified Wallet. Kraken says eligible balances are pooled immediately after enabling it; existing positions need not be closed simply to move from separate wallets to unified.
For the Kraken Pro app, the same announcement gives this route: More → your name → Preferences → Wallet setting → Unified Wallet → Confirm. Its October 7 support guide shows another app layout using the profile icon, Settings, then Wallet type. These are different published navigation descriptions. Match the option visible in your app rather than assuming every account has identical menus.
If futures trading has not been activated, the rollout announcement says it can be activated in account settings first. That instruction is not evidence that every EEA resident, account type or verification state qualifies. Confirm the derivatives access and wallet option actually offered to your account; do not use someone else's screen as proof of availability.
Switching back has a condition
Kraken says you can return to separate wallets only after closing derivatives positions and active orders. An open order matters even if no position appears in the portfolio. Review both lists before expecting the toggle to work.
The support guide adds a practical detail: after separation, balances remain in Main and are not automatically transferred back into the derivatives wallet. To open new positions there, funds must be transferred manually. Restoring the wallet arrangement and funding a later trade are therefore separate steps. Verify the final wallet balances and setting instead of assuming that a successful toggle recreated the previous allocation.
Quick answers
Does enabling Unified Wallet open a futures trade?
The published procedure changes the wallet setting and pools eligible balances. It is not an instruction to place an order. Inspect existing positions and orders because the new collateral arrangement can still affect commitments already on the account.
Does holding XAU make futures exposure protected from losses?
No. Kraken says XAU can count as futures collateral. Being collateral means it supports risk; the announcement does not describe it as a shield against futures losses.
Can I keep all futures products together?
Do not assume so. The support guide keeps inverse futures and US TradFi futures separate from the shared pool. Check the actual product you trade and its wallet, rather than applying a Multi-M explanation to every futures contract.
What should I do if I mainly hold spot assets?
Compare the collateral boundary you want with the default cross-margin arrangement before enabling the feature. Revisit the Kraken profile for venue context, then check current official rules and your account's settings. Reducing transfers is useful only when the resulting exposure matches your intention.
What we could not verify
The announcement establishes the EEA rollout, but not individual account eligibility, the exact menu shown on every app version, or account-specific costs and collateral parameters. The article uses the October 16 rollout announcement and the currently accessible official support guide; those unknowns require the live account interface or an updated Kraken answer.
