OKX Funding vs Trading Account: Where Your Balance Is and How Transfers Work
The short answer
On OKX accounts that show both, Funding holds purchased or deposited assets while Trading supplies the balance used for orders. Use Assets > Transfer to move the selected asset between those account sections; OKX describes this internal transfer as free and instant, although restrictions can make part of a balance unavailable. First confirm which OKX service and account screen you use, because the global transfer guide and OKX TR's Simple/Exchange interface describe different things.

Why a positive balance can coexist with no trading balance
The useful question is where the asset is available for the action you want. A portfolio overview and an order form answer different questions. Seeing an asset in the overview does not establish that the same quantity is available in the account section used by the order.
OKX's transfer guide describes purchased crypto going into Funding, with an internal move to Trading before using the relevant markets. Its beginner guide also separates these account sections. That gives a practical first check when an order screen appears empty after a purchase: look at the account holding the asset before sending another deposit.
Start from the OKX exchange profile for platform context, then inspect your own Assets page. The objective is to identify the existing balance, rather than buy the asset again to make the order form show a number.
Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.
| Screen or label | What to establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Funding account | Whether the asset is held in this account section | That an order can already use it |
| Trading account | Whether the selected asset has reached the trading section | That every displayed unit is transferable |
| Portfolio overview | Which asset categories contain your balance | The available amount for a particular action |
| Transfer form | Source, destination, asset and transferable quantity | An exchange rate or a blockchain destination |
| OKX TR Simple/Exchange mode | Which local trading interface is selected | The global Funding/Trading account split |
An internal transfer changes location, not the coin
Moving an asset from Funding to Trading is an account operation. It is not an instruction to exchange that asset for another token. If the issue is that you hold a different asset from the one an order needs, moving the existing asset between sections does not perform a conversion.
Likewise, the global guide's Funding/Trading transfer is not a withdrawal to an external wallet. That distinction matters when following a tutorial: an address and network belong to a different decision from selecting two account sections in the transfer form.
There is also a separate main-account/sub-account scope. Read the scope before the direction. A form pointing to a sub-account solves a different task from moving funds within the main account, even when both routes sit under the Transfer menu.
Check the destination before repeating a deposit
OKX's current transfer guide includes an exception to the simple deposit-then-transfer description: if Trading was selected as the deposit account, an on-chain deposit is automatically transferred there. Funding is not an unavoidable stop for every deposit.
That is why the best sequence begins with the actual deposit destination and account display. If the asset is already in Trading, another Funding-to-Trading instruction may be irrelevant. If it remains in Funding, the transfer form can help establish the next available step.
Check regional eligibility and account terms
Open →Do not treat a guide's default route as evidence that your own transaction failed. Check what the account currently shows, then distinguish a credited balance in the wrong section from a deposit that has not been credited at all. Those are separate support questions.
How to review the transfer on app or web
The official global workflow uses Assets > Transfer on both app and web. Review these fields in order:
1. Open Assets, then choose Transfer in the service you actually use. 2. Check the scope: within the main account, or between main and sub-account. 3. Set the source account and destination account. For the ordinary move toward trading, that is Funding to Trading; read the reverse direction just as carefully. 4. Select the asset already held in the source account. 5. Enter the amount and compare it with the transferable balance shown. 6. Read the complete form before selecting Confirm.
The purpose of this checklist is to catch a wrong scope, direction or asset before submission. It does not mean that a blocked amount becomes movable because the form has been reopened.
After a transfer, compare the source and destination balances for the same asset. If the result seems inconsistent, retain the operation details and the displayed status for Support. A second deposit cannot explain what happened to an existing transfer.
What “free and instant” actually covers
OKX describes its internal account transfer as free of charge and instantly credited. Apply that statement to the operation in the cited transfer guide. It is not a promise that external withdrawals, token conversions or another provider's payment process are free.
Speed also assumes that the amount can be transferred. The same official article lists conditions that can prevent movement. A displayed restriction and a completed transfer are different states; an expectation of instant credit does not override the restriction.
For a practical decision, first identify whether the account accepted the internal operation. If it did not, investigate the reason shown instead of repeatedly interpreting the word “instant” as a deadline for unlocking the balance.
Why some funds cannot be moved
The transfer guide identifies frozen assets, open-position requirements, network deposit limits, temporary real-time settlement, unpaid spot-margin debt and Earn subscriptions as possible obstacles. These explanations describe different uses or restrictions of the balance, not a single generic error.
An open position can keep assets committed to trading. An Earn subscription places assets in a product with its own redemption step. Unpaid margin debt is another dependency. Those conditions cannot be diagnosed just by comparing the portfolio total with the amount you typed.
The guide says restrictions from a network deposit limit are lifted gradually using a daily quota, but it does not supply a universal quota amount. Its temporary settlement explanation also does not give every reader a fixed waiting period. Avoid building a withdrawal plan around an invented amount or countdown.
Before changing anything, identify which condition the account actually reports. Closing a position, redeeming a product or repaying debt changes the underlying arrangement. Treat those as separate decisions; the presence of a transfer error alone does not choose among them.
For Turkish readers: separate the account question from the interface question
OKX TR's own beginner guide describes Basit mode and Borsa mode, corresponding to Simple and Exchange. Those are interface choices for using the local service. The local guide does not establish that every OKX TR account presents the global Funding/Trading split or identical Transfer controls.
A Turkish-language tutorial about the global labels therefore should not be followed by matching words alone. Confirm the service name and the labels actually visible in your account. An internal transfer within global OKX is not evidence of a transfer route between global OKX and OKX TR.
For the separate question of Turkish-lira bank funding, use the OKX TR TRY deposit guide. A bank deposit and movement between account sections require different checks; mixing them makes an apparently simple balance problem harder to explain.
How to act on this
Write down the service, asset, current account section and intended destination before opening the transfer form. Then compare those details with the actual available amount. The OKX profile and the broader deposit walkthrough provide related context if the problem turns out to be platform selection or incoming funds rather than internal balance location.
If you need Support, describe the stage precisely: asset visible in Funding, transfer unavailable, or transfer submitted with an unexpected result. Include the time and time zone as useful context. That is more actionable than saying only that the money disappeared, without assuming that the portfolio total has changed.
Quick answers
Does transferring Funding to Trading buy crypto? No. The workflow moves the selected asset between account sections; exchanging it for another asset is a separate action.
Must every deposit pass through Funding? No. The transfer guide says selecting Trading as the deposit account can automatically route on-chain deposits there.
Why can I see an asset but not move all of it? Check the available amount and account message. The official guide lists several restrictions and product commitments that can affect transferability.
Is the transfer fee the same as a withdrawal fee? No. The free-transfer statement concerns the internal operation in the guide and does not price an external withdrawal.
Are Simple/Exchange modes the same as Funding/Trading accounts? No. OKX TR's local beginner guide presents the former as interface modes; do not infer the global account structure from those labels.
