Bitcoin's One-Month Realized Volatility Falls to About 25% as Fed Holds Rates

7 min

The short answer

Bitcoin's one-month realized volatility has fallen to about 25%, back to levels last seen in summer 2023, according to a PANews report citing Glassnode on October 28. The reading describes past price variation; it gives BTC holders a different piece of information from the Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates at 3.75%–4%. Check the period behind your volatility indicator and the orders still open on your exchange before treating a quiet chart as a reason to increase a position. PANews' Glassnode report.

This follows our report on the Fed's rate decision and adds the reported volatility, ETF-flow and order-book observations. Readers of our earlier Polymarket five-minute BTC and other crypto contracts article should keep the contract's observation interval separate from a month-long market statistic. The new figures below concern Bitcoin's broader trading conditions, rather than the outcome of a particular five-minute contract.

What the 25% reading actually covers

PANews published its Glassnode item at 00:09 SGT on October 29, ahead of the Fed announcement at 02:00 SGT. The report said Bitcoin had fallen below the $84,000–$85,000 range, which had capped gains four times during the year. It also described weaker ETF demand and a lower concentration of bids on Binance's spot order book. These observations belong to the report's snapshot. The report and its figures.

The order of events limits what can be concluded. A volatility reading published before the decision cannot show the size of Bitcoin's response after it. Nor does the phrase “back to summer 2023 levels” say Bitcoin is trading at its summer 2023 price. The comparison concerns the reported volatility measure. Keep the name of the indicator beside the percentage when sharing the figure or adding it to a trading journal.

For a BTC holder, the useful question is which period an indicator measures. A month-long observation and the latest candle can both be accurately displayed while describing different intervals. If you are evaluating a short-duration trade, write down its start and end alongside the chart interval. Using the same asset name does not make different time windows interchangeable.

The PANews item also said realized losses triggered by successive declines had narrowed since August. It attributed an assessment of weak demand and limited selling pressure to Glassnode. That is an analytical description of the conditions covered by the report. It does not establish the direction of the next BTC trade. PANews' account of Glassnode's assessment.

The money and order-book figures behind the quiet market

The same report put net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs at about $67 million over the preceding two weeks. It placed the main buy-side concentration on Binance's spot order book at $78,000–$79,000, with a size of about $42 million. The figures describe different things: money entering ETF products during a period and bids visible on an exchange order book at an observation point. The ETF and bid figures.

Keep those scopes intact when comparing the figures. Adding ETF inflows to visible bids would create a total with no useful common meaning. The ETF observation covers a period; the bid observation describes an order book. Neither figure measures the value of every buyer currently interested in Bitcoin.

For readers using Binance, the $78,000–$79,000 observation is a reason to inspect the current BTC spot book, not to copy an old level into a new order without looking. Compare the actual pair, displayed quantities and observation time. Save the values you see with the order you are considering. The report does not say that the displayed bids remain present throughout a later trading session.

It also supplies no account-specific fee or execution quote. A reader comparing the market with an exchange account should examine the order preview for the chosen pair and amount. The NexuAlpha rates board provides a separate place to review the data it displays; its labels and timestamps should stay attached to those readings when used alongside the report.

The Fed outcome is now a published decision

The Federal Reserve's October 28 statement confirms a 10–2 vote to maintain the federal funds target range at 3.75%–4%. Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack voted against that action because they preferred an increase of a quarter percentage point. The release time of 2 p.m. EDT corresponds to 02:00 SGT on October 29. The official FOMC statement.

The committee said economic activity was expanding at a strong pace and inflation remained elevated. It said accumulating more information would help determine the policy stance needed to bring inflation back to its 2% goal. Those are the conditions and objective set out by the committee. The statement does not provide a Bitcoin price response or a BTC volatility estimate. The Fed's economic assessment.

A post-decision trading note can therefore keep two entries: the official rate outcome and the separately reported Bitcoin conditions. The source for one does not confirm every number in the other. A hold is the policy action announced at the meeting; “about 25%” is the volatility observation attributed to Glassnode before that announcement.

This makes timing useful when reviewing a trade. If an order was placed before 02:00 SGT, preserve the information available at that point. If you amend it after the announcement, record the new reason beside the amendment. That keeps a later policy result from being silently inserted into an earlier explanation of why the order was placed.

How to review an open BTC position after the announcement

Use this sequence in the account that holds your BTC position:

  1. Open the position screen. Record the full instrument identifier, direction, quantity and displayed size unit. Compare them with the exposure you intended to hold through the Fed announcement.
  2. Open the pending-order list. Read each order's instrument, quantity and conditions. Identify any order that no longer matches that intention before deciding whether to keep or change it.
  3. Record the decision and time. If you amend an order, save its previous details and the changed fields so you can distinguish the original trade from your response to the announcement.

The 25% figure by itself supplies no instruction to buy, sell or increase leverage.

For a perpetual-contract check, the official OKX public instrument endpoint returned BTC-USDT-SWAP with state live during this run. Its fields identify a linear contract settled in USDT, with contract value denominated in BTC. That verifies the listed product in the public response. Personal access and the details of an intended order still need checking in the relevant account. Official product evidence: OKX public instruments endpoint, www.okx.com/api/v5/public/instruments?instType=SWAP&instId=BTC-USDT-SWAP.

Open the instrument details for the contract you actually hold. Read the size units before comparing the position with a spot BTC balance. A displayed quantity and a BTC amount should only be compared after you have identified what each unit represents. This is especially useful when a market headline quotes Bitcoin while your position is a derivative with its own identifier.

For an order left unchanged, retain the conditions shown in the account. The reported market snapshot does not establish what is queued for your position.

Use the funding-rates board only for the funding observations it actually shows. Compare the venue and contract before putting a funding figure beside a volatility number. These indicators answer different questions, and a quiet month of BTC trading does not supply the current funding value for an individual contract.

What remains unconfirmed in the Bitcoin snapshot

The volatility and ETF figures above are attributed to PANews' account of Glassnode. The underlying dataset was not independently reproduced for this article, so those figures remain a reported snapshot rather than a fresh post-decision market reading.

The opened report does not include the calculation inputs for the 25% measure or the exact capture time of the Binance bids. Those gaps matter if you are trying to reproduce the statistic or compare a specific order-book screen. Use the named period and the reported ranges as historical observations. Obtain a new observation before treating them as the current state of your trading venue.

What should an existing BTC holder check first?
