Bitcoin Rejected at $83K: The Sell Wall, 5% Treasury Yields and the Long Liquidations Behind Monday's Reversal — What to Do Now

7 min

The short answer

Bitcoin ran to $83,158 on Binance early on Monday, October 19, 2026, hit a wall of sell orders stacked above $83,000, and slid back to about $81,750 by 16:00 UTC (00:00 SGT) even as the Nasdaq rose 1.5%. The reason is not crypto-specific: US Treasury yields reversed higher with stocks, with the 10-year back at 5.13%, Brent crude near $108 after weekend attacks on Gulf tankers, and the market pricing a small chance of a Fed hike next week, so the "risk basket" that Bitcoin trades inside stayed heavy. In the latest hour our Binance + OKX collector logged at least $57 million of futures liquidations, 98% of them longs. If you are leveraged, the levels that matter this week are $81,600 below and $83,300 above; if you are not, nothing in the data says a trend has started in either direction.

What happened, hour by hour

The move is small in percentage terms, which is exactly why it hurt leveraged traders: the whole day traded inside a $2,500 band and both edges of that band triggered liquidations. The table uses Binance BTC/USDT hourly candles and our own liquidation history (Binance + OKX, the two venues we observe).

Time (UTC / SGT)BTC/USDT on BinanceWhat our liquidation collector logged
Oct 18, 20:00 / Oct 19, 04:00Low of the 24 h window at $80,684About $69.4 million in the hour, $67.1 million of it longs
Oct 18, 23:00 – Oct 19, 03:00Rebound from $81,700 to $82,800Shorts squeezed: $54.4 million (23:00) and $35.3 million (02:00), almost all shorts
Oct 19, 07:00 / 15:00High of the day at $83,158About $71.9 million in the 08:00 hour, $70.9 million of it shorts
Oct 19, 10:00 – 14:00Rejection, dip to $81,762Smaller bursts of $13.4 million (11:00) and $12.1 million (14:00), mostly longs
Oct 19, 15:00 – 16:43Slide to $81,749, last price $81,998$36.0 million in the 15:00 hour, then at least $57 million in the rolling hour to 16:43, 98% longs; largest single order a $4.09 million BTC long on OKX at 16:03

So the day had two squeezes. Shorts paid on the way up to $83K overnight in Asia; longs paid on the way back down during the US session. Across the whole of October 18 our collector counted $266 million of liquidations, and October 19 was already at $252 million by 16:00 UTC, with shorts making up $199 million of that. These are observed figures from two venues, so the market-wide number is larger: Cointelegraph, citing CoinGlass, put 24-hour cross-crypto liquidations at $335 million at the time of its report.

Open interest did not fall with price. Binance BTC/USDT perpetual open interest stood at $7.83 billion at 16:43 UTC, up 2.98% over 24 hours, and ETH at $5.47 billion, up 0.78%. Funding stayed mildly positive: 0.0092% on Binance and 0.0100% on OKX for the 00:00 UTC settlement. Rising open interest plus flat price plus positive funding means new longs were being added into the rejection, which is the setup that produces the next flush if $81,600 gives way.

Why the macro mattered more than the chart

Cointelegraph's market report at 16:05 UTC describes ask liquidity "amassed above $83,000 across exchanges", with BTC/USD on Bitstamp dipping to $81,678 after reaching $83,062. That wall is the near-term story, but the reason buyers did not push through it sits in the bond market:

  • Yields rose with stocks. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.5% in early Monday trading and South Korea's KOSPI closed 1.76% higher at 5,768, yet the US 10-year yield returned to 5.13% and the 30-year to 5.46% (Cointelegraph). Decrypt's figures from CNBC put the 10-year at 5.08% and the 2-year at 4.72%. A near risk-free 5% competes with Bitcoin for the same money.
  • Oil and inflation. Brent crude traded near $108 a barrel after weekend attacks on Persian Gulf tankers and Russian crude facilities, according to Decrypt. September CPI rose 3.7% year on year and PPI 6.3%, the biggest annual producer-price rise since 2022.
  • A hike is back on the table. Decrypt reports markets pricing roughly a 15% chance of a quarter-point Fed hike at next week's meeting. Higher rates raise the cost of debt for the AI data-centre builders whose stocks led last week's sell-off: the Nasdaq fell 4.5% last week, its worst week since June, and CoreWeave lost about 24% to 25% (CoinDesk, Decrypt).
  • Earnings risk this week. Meta and Tesla report this week, and Cointelegraph lists SpaceX among the releases due Tuesday and Wednesday. QCP Capital warned that "broader equity deleveraging dynamics could transmit to cryptocurrency markets and potentially threaten the $80,000 support level if sustained".

Whale behaviour fits the picture. CryptoQuant's Binance whale ratio, the share of the ten largest inflow transactions in total inflows, fell to 0.45 from 0.54 at the start of October, which Cointelegraph reads as large holders doing less, not more, at these prices.

The levels traders are watching

Decrypt's technical read gives concrete numbers rather than adjectives, and they line up with where Monday's liquidations clustered:

Decrypt also notes the Squeeze Momentum indicator has been "on" for 13 days and the ADX reads 21.6, below the 25 threshold that marks a real trend. In plain words: volatility is compressed, false breakouts are likely, and Monday's $83K rejection was one of them.

What to do now

For a leveraged position, the honest answer is that both sides got liquidated inside a 3% range in 24 hours, so position size matters more than direction. Check your liquidation price against $81,600 and $80,500 if you are long, and against $83,300 and $84,250 if you are short, and keep an eye on the funding you pay at each 8-hour settlement on our funding-rate board. The live liquidation page shows the same Binance + OKX feed used in this article, so you can see whether a flush is building before the headline appears.

If you trade these levels, do it where the fees do not eat the edge: Bitget perpetuals with invite code nexu888 carry an automatic fee rebate through NexuAlpha, and on-chain traders can use Hyperliquid with code NEXU888, where funding and liquidations are visible on-chain in real time. Lower leverage into the Fed meeting and the Meta and Tesla prints; the ADX says the range can hold for days.

For spot holders the data is less dramatic. Price sits above both the 50-day and 200-day EMAs, open interest is rising rather than capitulating, and ETF flows, not order-book walls, are the slower force to watch: last week's outflows are covered in our ETF flow note, and corporate buyers kept adding on Monday, as Strategy's 267 BTC purchase and Strive's 4,045 BTC week show.

Quick answers

Why did Bitcoin fall from $83,000 on October 19? Sell orders stacked above $83,000 absorbed the overnight rally while US Treasury yields rose back above 5% alongside stocks, oil traded near $108 and markets priced a small chance of a Fed hike; BTC slid to about $81,750 on Binance by 16:00 UTC.

How much was liquidated? Our Binance + OKX collector logged at least $57 million in the hour to 16:43 UTC, 98% longs, and about $71.9 million of mostly short liquidations in the 08:00 UTC hour when BTC tagged $83,158. CoinGlass's market-wide 24-hour figure, cited by Cointelegraph, was $335 million.

What is the key support? Decrypt points to $81,603 (the 0.236 Fibonacci level) and then the 50-day EMA near $80,548; QCP Capital names $80,000 as the level equity deleveraging could threaten.

What is the key resistance? $83,000 to $83,158, where Monday's rally failed, then daily closes above $83,330 and $84,246.

Is open interest falling? No. Binance BTC perpetual open interest rose 2.98% in 24 hours to $7.83 billion with funding slightly positive, so leverage is being added, not removed.

What events could move price this week? Meta and Tesla earnings this week, the Fed meeting next week, and the oil price after the weekend attacks on Gulf tankers.
