Why Is Bitcoin Going Up Today? $82,700, a $63 Million Short Squeeze and What to Check Before Chasing It

6 min

The short answer

Bitcoin is up about 1.3% over 24 hours to roughly $82,700 on Monday 19 October 2026, and almost all of the leverage that got wiped out on the way up belonged to shorts. In the four hours to 15:51 SGT, Binance and OKX showed $66.7 million of futures liquidations, of which $63.3 million were short positions; in the last hour alone, shorts were $49.1 million of $49.9 million. The trigger is a risk-on morning: China's third-quarter GDP beat expectations, oil fell and Nasdaq futures rose more than 1%. Funding is still near its neutral setting, so this looks like shorts being forced out rather than a crowded long chase. That matters, because a squeeze can fade as fast as it started once the forced buying is done.

What bitcoin did since the early-morning low

The Binance USDT-M futures chart shows the move clearly. Bitcoin sank to a 24-hour low of $80,622.0 in the hour starting 04:00 SGT, then climbed in steps: it closed the 06:00 hour at $81,734.7, the 08:00 hour at $82,269.1 and the 10:00 hour at $82,682.5. The 24-hour high so far is $83,157.9, printed in the 15:00 SGT hour, and price was back at about $82,699 at the time of writing. That is a range of roughly 3.1% from low to high, and a 24-hour change of +1.307% on Binance's own ticker.

The morning rally was not a single candle. Bitcoin rose every hour from 05:00 to 10:00 SGT, which is what a grind through a stack of short stop orders looks like, as opposed to one large buyer lifting the market. The hours after 10:00 were flat, between $82,450 and $82,855, with the push to $83,157.9 rejected within the hour. That rejection is the first thing to watch: price spent several hours above $82,000 without being able to hold $83,000.

The macro push behind it

CoinDesk's morning market report ties the move to Chinese data. China's economy grew 4.5% year on year in the third quarter, faster than the 4.3% of the second quarter, and retail sales rose 1.1% against an expected 0.5%. Oil fell on both sides of the Atlantic after Reuters-reported expectations that a U.S. Russia waiver would add supply. Nasdaq futures gained more than 1%, Japan's Nikkei added 1.8% and South Korea's Kospi 0.6%, all recovering from a week in which AI-related shares led losses. CoinDesk also notes that the Dollar Index sat below 102 and gold was near $4,180, and that the Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates in the 4.75% to 5% range this month.

None of that is crypto-specific, which is the point. When bitcoin trades with the Nasdaq, a green Asian open hands the market a reason to buy, and the people who were short have a reason to cover. The liquidation numbers below show how many of them were caught.

The liquidations: shorts, not longs

Our liquidations page aggregates observed forced closures on Binance and OKX. As a lower bound, not the whole market, here is what it showed at 15:51 SGT on 19 October:

WindowLongs liquidatedShorts liquidatedTotalOrders
Last 1 hour$0.84M$49.09M$49.93M2,088
Last 4 hours$3.38M$63.28M$66.66M10,211
Last 24 hours$437.35M$695.82M$1,133.17M165,334

The one-hour column is the story. Of $49.93 million, $37.79 million was OKX's BTC-USDT contract, with another $5.50 million on OKX ETH-USDT, $2.96 million on Binance BTCUSDT and $1.44 million on Binance ETHUSDT. The single largest order in the hour was an $8.60 million short on OKX BTC-USDT at 15:34 SGT. A short liquidation is a forced buy, so a cluster of them adds buying pressure at exactly the moment price is already rising, which is the loop traders call a short squeeze.

The 24-hour column needs context. It still shows both sides hurt: $437.3 million of longs and $695.8 million of shorts, which is why our event feed flags "both sides liquidated". Earlier long liquidations from the past day are inside that number. What changed this afternoon is that the flow turned one-directional.

What the derivatives say about the next move

Open interest on Binance's BTCUSDT contract is $7.86 billion, up 3.43% in 24 hours, while ETHUSDT open interest is $5.56 billion, up 1.77%. Rising open interest during a rally means new positions are being opened, not just old ones closed; a squeeze with falling open interest is mostly covering and tends to exhaust itself sooner.

Funding is the cooler signal. The latest Binance rate for BTC is 0.01% per eight hours, the standard baseline setting, and OKX's is about 0.0057%. That works out to roughly 11% a year on Binance if it never moved, hardly a crowded-long reading. Ether funding is similar at 0.01% on Binance and 0.0066% on OKX. The market has not turned greedy yet.

A fair reading is that price has climbed back above $81,000, shorts have been cleared out of the way, and the next test is whether spot buyers carry it. If funding climbs well above its baseline while price stalls under $83,158, the move is turning crowded.

What to check before chasing it

  • Is open interest still rising? If price holds near $83,000 but open interest drops, the rally was covering, not new demand.
  • Does funding stay near 0.01%? A jump toward 0.03% or more per eight hours would mean longs are paying to stay in.
  • Where did the liquidations happen? Most of the last hour came from OKX BTC-USDT. If the next burst is on Binance or in altcoins, the move is spreading rather than ending.
  • The $83,158 and $80,622 markers. They are the 24-hour high and low. A close beyond either, on the hourly chart, matters more than a wick.
  • The macro calendar. The same data that lifted Asia will be read again in Europe and New York; oil and Nasdaq futures are the two prices that moved with bitcoin today.

How to act on this

If you trade moves like this, the order of operations matters more than the direction: size down after a vertical hour, keep leverage low enough that a $1,000 wick does not liquidate you, and watch the funding rate before adding. You can follow the same liquidation tape on OKX, where most of today's forced closes were printed; the exchange profile lists current perpetual fees, and signing up with code nexu888 puts a fee rebate on your trades. Bitget is the other venue we track daily, also with code nexu888.

Quick answers

Why is bitcoin up today? A risk-on Asian session after better-than-expected China GDP and lower oil, plus forced buying from liquidated shorts. Bitcoin is near $82,700, up 1.3% in 24 hours on Binance.

How much was liquidated? In the last hour to 15:51 SGT, $49.9 million on Binance and OKX, 98% of it shorts; in 24 hours, $1.13 billion, split $437 million long and $696 million short.

Is this a short squeeze? The pattern fits: price up, liquidations almost all shorts, funding neutral. A confirmed squeeze would also show price stalling once the shorts are gone, so watch the reaction near $83,158.

What is the funding rate on BTC? 0.01% per eight hours on Binance and about 0.0057% on OKX at the latest settlement.

Is the liquidation total the whole market? No. It counts observed orders on Binance and OKX; the real total across all venues is larger.

What we could not verify

We did not have order-book data to say whether spot or perpetual buying led the 06:00 to 10:00 SGT climb, and exchange liquidation feeds sample orders, so the totals are floors. The link between China's GDP and bitcoin's move comes from CoinDesk's market report and the timing of the rally, not from a statement by any trader.
