Why Is Zcash (ZEC) Up Today? $1,241, +10% in 24 Hours, the NU7 Decision and What to Check Before Chasing It
The short answer
Zcash is up about 10% in 24 hours to roughly $1,241 because three things lined up: a market-wide bounce after a week of losses, traders positioning ahead of a developer decision on the NU7 network upgrade due on 20 October, and a privacy-coin rally that also lifted Monero. At the time of writing ZEC is the best performer among the top ten coins, but it is still about 19% below where it stood 30 days ago, so the move has recovered only part of the month's drop. If you are thinking of buying after a double-digit day, the numbers below show what the move cost leveraged traders and where the funding rate sits.

What moved and by how much
Our own reading of three exchanges at about 20:49 UTC on 20 October (04:49 on 21 October in Singapore) shows the same picture on each venue. OKX's ZEC-USDT perpetual last traded at 1,241.11 against a 24-hour open of 1,125.12, a gain of 10.3%. Bybit's ZECUSDT perpetual was at 1,240.99, up 10.3%, with 191.4 million dollars of open interest and 372 million dollars of 24-hour turnover. Binance's ZECUSDT perpetual was at 1,241.37, up 10.18%, with 1.81 billion dollars of 24-hour quote volume. The high of the day was about 1,244, so the price was sitting at the top of its range, not fading from it.
CoinGecko shows the same coin at 1,236.49 with a market capitalization of about 21.0 billion dollars, which ranks tenth, and a 24-hour volume near 873 million dollars. Over seven days it is up only 1.5%, and over 30 days it is down 18.6%. Decrypt's market report from the same day describes the broader backdrop: total crypto market capitalization up 1.68% to 2.78 trillion dollars, Bitcoin up 1.57% to 83,195 dollars, Ether up 2.90% to 2,463 dollars, and the Fear & Greed Index at a neutral 51. Zcash's 8.5% gain at the time of that report made it the strongest large token in the bounce, and it rose further after.
The three reasons traders give
The first is the market itself. Decrypt notes that chip and AI stocks recovered on Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite up about 1.1%, and that crypto has often moved with technology shares. Bitcoin and other crypto exchange-traded funds recorded net inflows of 526.7 million dollars, the biggest in a month, and Bitcoin found buyers between 80,000 and 81,000 dollars. When the largest coins bounce after days of losses, higher-beta coins such as ZEC move harder, in both directions.
The second is positioning after a drop. Zcash had fallen about 25% over the previous month by Decrypt's count, which means many traders who had borrowed to bet on a higher price were already forced out. A liquidation is the exchange closing a leveraged position automatically after losses reach a set limit, and that forced selling adds to a fall. With that selling spent, the price had room to snap back.

Open →The third is the NU7 network upgrade. Decrypt reports that developers were due to decide on NU7 on 20 October and that traders often buy ahead of such events. We could not read the upgrade specification itself, so we do not repeat claims about fee splits or locked coins that we could not check against a primary source. What matters for you is the pattern: coins often rally into a scheduled decision and sometimes give the move back after it. Privacy coins have also been strong lately; Decrypt puts Monero up 15.29% over seven days at 609.87 dollars.
What the funding rate says
The funding rate is the small payment that long and short holders of a perpetual contract exchange every eight hours to keep the contract price near the spot price. When it is high and positive, longs are crowded and pay shorts. OKX's current ZEC-USDT funding rate was 0.01% with a settled figure of about 0.004% for the previous period, and Bybit's was 0.01%. That is the standard baseline level on both exchanges, not an overheated one. In plain terms, the crowd is not paying extra to hold longs yet, so this rally has not turned into a leverage frenzy. The funding board shows the current number for every major pair if you want to check it again before you trade.
Zakura's quantum-safe swap fix
A second ZEC headline moved the same week. Zakura, a developer of Zcash full-node software, proposed on 18 October a way to stop a future quantum computer from linking a user's private payments, built on one-time viewing keys, with no network upgrade required. Decrypt reports that the biggest exposure comes from swaps through the NEAR Intents service, where a shielded refund address is written to NEAR's public chain, and that between 600 and 700 million dollars had flowed through that route by May. Wallets built on Zakura's libraries are expected to add the feature in the coming weeks. This is a development story, not a price catalyst, but it explains why privacy narratives are drawing attention.
What to do now
Decide your position size before you look at the chart. A coin that has moved 10% in a day and is still 19% under its 30-day level can go either direction, and a perpetual with 20x leverage turns a 5% move against you into a total loss. If you trade ZEC perpetuals, use low leverage, set the exit before you enter, and avoid adding to a position just because the candle is green. Compare the fee you actually pay: OKX lists ZEC-USDT and charges 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on USDT perpetuals at the entry tier, and a sign-up through code nexu888 on the OKX profile comes with the partner fee rebate described there. Bybit also lists the contract, and its entry-tier perpetual fee is 0.02% maker and 0.055% taker, with code 48553 on the Bybit profile. Whichever you pick, buy spot if you want to hold, and use the rates board to see the cost first.
What we could not verify
We could not open the Zcash project's own NU7 documentation or the CoinDesk report on the holder vote, so the content of the upgrade and the vote result are not described here. We also did not find an official statement that links the day's rise to a single cause; the reasons above are the explanations given by Decrypt and the data we read from exchanges.
