Ether ETFs Have Lost $1.08 Billion in October 2026, the Biggest Monthly Outflow of the Year: What ETH Holders Should Check

6 min

The short answer

US spot Ether ETFs have recorded $1.08 billion of net outflows so far in October 2026, according to SoSoValue data reported by Cointelegraph on October 21. That is the largest monthly outflow of the year and the largest since November 2025, and it arrives with eight trading sessions of the month still to go. It erased the $832 million of net inflows the funds took in during September. Ether itself has slipped 9.7% in October, from about $2,700 to about $2,438 at publication, while US spot Bitcoin ETFs are roughly flat for the month at about $67 million of net outflows. If you hold ETH, the practical reading is that institutional ETF demand is not supporting the price right now, so the useful checks are your leverage, the funding rate and your own time horizon, not a prediction about next week.

What the numbers say

Cointelegraph's October 21 report puts the October total for US spot Ether ETFs at $1.08 billion of net outflows after a $26 million inflow on Tuesday. Year to date, the funds are still up about $485 million in net inflows, which means more than half of this year's accumulated inflows has already been given back in a single month. In the weekly report from October 19, the same data provider showed Ether funds losing $320 million over the previous week, their third straight week of losses, after a combined $1.22 billion of outflows from Bitcoin and Ether funds in the week before that.

Our own arithmetic on the two reports: the October total was about $955 million on October 19 and is $1.08 billion on October 21, so roughly $125 million left the funds in the sessions in between. The pace slowed compared with early October, but it has not reversed.

Why Ether and Bitcoin look different

The contrast is the real story. Bitcoin ETFs took in $527 million on Monday and are only about $67 million negative for October, while Bitcoin trades near $83,000, down about 2.2% since October 1 and 5.3% for the year. Ether ETFs are down $1.08 billion and the coin is down 9.7% for the month and close to 18% for 2026, according to the same report.

Cointelegraph's report does not give a reason for the split, and neither do we want to invent one. What the data supports is narrower: money has been leaving the Ether products steadily for three weeks, while the Bitcoin products had one very large inflow day that has since faded to a small one. Flows to other crypto ETFs were also negative last week in the October 19 report: Solana funds lost about $26 million, Zcash about $19 million and Hyperliquid about $18 million, with XRP and BNB funds losing much smaller amounts.

What the price did today

Flows and price do not move in lockstep every day. On Binance at about 08:50 UTC on October 21, ETH traded near $2,459, up about 3% over 24 hours, and BTC near $83,370, up about 2.2%. So the price is bouncing on the same day the outflow headline is published. A bounce while ETF money is still leaving is the kind of mixed signal that makes leveraged longs risky, because the buyer who is driving the move is not necessarily the buyer who stays.

How to act on this

There is no trade in this headline, but there are checks that take five minutes.

  1. Check your leverage first. A 9.7% monthly decline in ETH is well inside the range where 10x positions are liquidated. If your liquidation price is within a few percent of today's price, reduce size before reading any more headlines.
  2. Look at funding. If perpetual funding on ETH is strongly positive, longs are paying shorts, and a crowded long gets expensive to hold. Our funding rates board compares Binance and OKX and updates through the day.
  3. Separate the ETF story from your horizon. ETF flows describe what US institutions and advisers did this month. They say nothing certain about the next month. If you hold spot ETH for a long period, a monthly outflow record is context, not an instruction.
  4. Watch the next two weeks of flows. The month has eight sessions left. Another $500 million of outflows would put October at roughly $1.6 billion, which would be a very different number from today's, and a flat or positive week would change the tone.

What we could not verify

We could not open the SoSoValue dashboard itself, because its site blocked our request, so the flow numbers rest on Cointelegraph's reports of SoSoValue data. We did not find an issuer-level breakdown of which funds saw the withdrawals, and the reports give no reasons for the Ether-versus-Bitcoin split. We have not tried to explain it.

Quick answers

How much have Ether ETFs lost in October 2026? $1.08 billion of net outflows through October 20, per SoSoValue data in Cointelegraph's October 21 report.

Is this the biggest outflow of the year? Yes, it is the biggest monthly outflow of 2026 and the biggest since November 2025, with eight trading sessions still left in October.

Are Ether ETFs still positive for the year? Yes, by about $485 million of net inflows year to date, down from about $610 million reported on October 19.

Are Bitcoin ETFs seeing outflows too? Only slightly. They are about $67 million negative for October after $527 million came in on Monday and $23 million on Tuesday.

Does an ETF outflow mean ETH will keep falling? The reports do not say so and we do not predict prices. What it does show is that ETF buying is not supporting the price at the moment.

What should I check today? Your leverage and liquidation price, the ETH funding rate, and how much of your position you are comfortable holding through another volatile week.
