Is Staking ETH Still Worth It? Yield Falls to 2.63% as a Record 43.8 Million ETH Is Staked (October 2026)

5 min

The short answer

Ethereum staking pays about 2.2% to 2.6% a year right now, and that rate has been drifting down while more ETH is locked than ever before. Bitwise's Staking Report for the fourth quarter of 2026 says 43.80 million ETH, or 35.9% of supply, was staked at the end of September, and that the gross staking yield fell to 2.63% from 2.81% the quarter before. Lido's own seven-day average for stETH holders, which we read on 21 October, was 2.221% a year. Whether that is worth it depends on one thing: staking pays you in ETH, so it is a way to grow an ETH holding you already want to keep, not a way to earn a stable income in dollars.

What the Bitwise report says

According to Blockchain.News's summary of the report, Ethereum ended the third quarter with more stake securing the network than at any point in its history. Staking grew by net inflows of 1.99 million ETH, the sixth consecutive quarter of growth. At the same time the gross yield slid from 2.81% to 2.63%. Bitwise's reading is that the market upturn and cheaper on-chain activity came together with lower rewards across the large proof-of-stake networks.

The same report gives the comparison that matters for anyone choosing where to stake. Solana had 69% of its supply staked at a 5.99% gross yield, down from 6.38%. NEAR had 46% staked at 4.87%. Hyperliquid had 436 million HYPE staked at 2.24%, which Bitwise described as broadly unchanged. So Ethereum's yield is the lowest of the four, and its 35.9% share of supply staked is below Solana's 69% and NEAR's 46%; the HYPE figure is given only in tokens.

Bitwise also points to a structural change: the number of Ethereum validator records fell from about 1.1 million to 881,000 even as the amount of ETH securing the chain kept rising, which it attributes to operators consolidating under the Pectra upgrade. On Solana the validator count fell from 696 to 659, about 30% lower than a year earlier, which Bitwise puts down to cost pressure. For a holder, the point is that fewer, larger operators now run more of the stake.

Why the yield falls when more people stake

Ethereum's issuance is set by a formula that depends on how much ETH is staked, and the reward is divided among every staker. When the staked amount rises, each staker's share of the reward shrinks. That is why a record stake and a falling yield arrive together: they are two sides of the same fact, not a contradiction. A falling rate does not mean something broke; it means more people accepted the same reward.

What 2.2% to 2.6% looks like in money

Take 10 ETH. At the 2.221% seven-day average that Lido publishes for stETH, a year of staking adds about 0.222 ETH. Priced at the 2,454 dollars Hyperliquid's market showed for ETH at 00:47 UTC on 21 October, that is about 545 dollars, which is our arithmetic and moves with the ETH price. At Bitwise's 2.63% gross yield the same 10 ETH would add about 0.263 ETH. The two figures differ because one is a gross network figure and the other is what a specific liquid-staking holder receives, so use the lower one as your planning number.

Lido's daily rate over the last seven days stayed between 2.204% and 2.255%, and DefiLlama showed about 23.7 billion dollars of value in the Lido protocol when we read it. A high total value shows how popular the product is. It does not prove the product is safe.

What to check before you stake

First, decide whether you want to keep the ETH for years. Staking is paid in ETH, so a 2.2% reward on a coin that falls 20% is still a loss in dollars. Second, understand how you get out: unstaking can involve a queue, and a liquid-staking token such as stETH trades on markets where its price can differ slightly from ETH, especially in stress. Third, know who holds your coins. Staking through an exchange means the exchange holds your ETH and sets its own terms; staking through a smart-contract protocol means you rely on code that could have a flaw. Fourth, compare the rate you are shown with the net rate you receive after the operator's fee.

If your plan is only to own ETH, you do not need to stake it at all. The Bitget profile lists the 0.1% maker and taker spot fee we track for buying ETH, and signing up with code nexu888 puts you on the NexuAlpha partner terms. You can then decide separately whether a staking product is worth the lock-up and the extra risk.

What we could not verify

We read the Bitwise figures through a secondary summary, because the report itself and The Block's and The Defiant's write-ups were behind blocking pages when we tried. We did not check exchange staking rates, which differ by venue and by lock-up period, and we do not quote any here.

Quick answers

What is the Ethereum staking yield today? Bitwise puts the gross yield at 2.63% for the third quarter, and Lido's published seven-day average for stETH was 2.221% on 21 October.

Is Ethereum staking at a record? Yes. Bitwise reports 43.80 million ETH staked, equal to 35.9% of supply, the sixth straight quarter of growth.

Why is the yield falling? Rewards are shared among all stakers, so more staked ETH means a smaller share each.

Is Solana staking better paid? Bitwise shows Solana at 5.99% gross, more than double Ethereum's, but with a different token, different risks and a different validator structure.

Do I have to stake to hold ETH? No. You can hold ETH on an exchange or in a wallet without staking and decide later.
