Monero Futures Open Interest Tops $300 Million With XMR Near $604: What Leveraged Traders Should Check Now
The short answer
Monero (XMR) futures are getting crowded again. Notional open interest across exchanges has passed $300 million, close to January's record of about $320 million, according to SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk on 21 October 2026, while XMR trades around $604 after topping $600 for the first time since January. The last time open interest reached this level, XMR fell about 66% in the following weeks as long positions were forcibly closed. That does not mean a crash is coming, but it does mean a small move can now trigger a large wave of liquidations in either direction, so leverage, stop placement and margin mode matter more than usual this week.

In one week, open interest on Binance alone grew by about 31% in coin terms while the price rose about 10%. CoinDesk reports the same pattern market-wide: open interest measured in coins has climbed to a five-week high of 515,730 XMR, up from about 400,000 XMR a week earlier. When the number of open contracts grows faster than the price, new money is mostly arriving through leverage rather than spot buying.
Wednesday's range on Binance shows how quickly that leverage gets tested. XMRUSDT traded between $571.02 and $627.57 over the past 24 hours, a swing of almost 10%, on about $155 million of volume.
Why $300 million matters
Open interest is the value of all futures positions still open. It is not a signal by itself, but it tells you how much forced buying or selling could hit the market if prices move against the crowd.
CoinDesk recalls the January episode: XMR hit about $790 on 14 January with record open interest, then fell below $300 by the first week of February, a drop of roughly 66% that was accelerated by long liquidations. The setup today has the same two ingredients, rising price and rising open interest, at a slightly lower size.

Open →There is one important difference in the positioning data. On Binance, 58.9% of accounts trading XMRUSDT were long at 14:00 UTC (a long/short account ratio of 1.43). But among the exchange's top traders by position size, the picture flips: 59% of their position volume was short (ratio 0.69). In plain terms, many small accounts are betting on a rise while the largest accounts lean the other way. That mix can produce sharp moves in both directions: a drop can liquidate the crowd of small longs, and a squeeze higher can force big shorts to buy back.
Funding confirms the market is not yet overheated. Binance's XMRUSDT funding rate has sat at or just above the standard 0.01% per eight hours for the last six payments, and Bybit's rate was slightly negative at the time of writing. A crowded long trade usually shows funding well above that level, so the risk today is concentration and leverage, not an extreme funding cost.
What this means for you
If you hold XMR in a wallet with no leverage, a liquidation cascade changes nothing about the coins you own, though it can produce a sharp temporary price drop. The people exposed are futures traders.
Here is a practical checklist for anyone trading XMR perpetuals this week:
- Check your liquidation price, not just your entry. At 10x leverage, a move of about 10% against you can wipe out the margin. Wednesday's 24-hour range alone was almost 10%.
- Prefer isolated margin for a single XMR bet. With cross margin, a sudden XMR wick can pull collateral from your other positions. Isolated margin limits the damage to the margin you assigned to that trade.
- Place stops away from round numbers. $600 and $570 are obvious levels where many stops and liquidation prices cluster. Prices often move quickly through such zones when a cascade starts.
- Watch open interest and price together. If price falls while open interest drops sharply, liquidations are happening. If open interest keeps rising after a big move, the crowd is adding risk instead of closing it.
- Check market-wide liquidations. Our liquidations page tracks forced closures across major exchanges. On Wednesday, both longs and shorts were being liquidated at a similar pace across the market, which shows how choppy conditions are.
- Size down before big macro dates. The Federal Reserve meets on 27 and 28 October; volatility in bitcoin tends to spill over into smaller coins like XMR.
Where XMR futures trade
Monero is not available on every exchange because of its privacy features, but several large venues still list XMR perpetual contracts. At the time of writing, XMRUSDT perpetuals were live on Binance, Bybit and Bitget, each quoting around $604. OKX did not list an XMR swap contract.
How to act on this
If you trade the XMR move with derivatives, use a venue with clear liquidation rules and an isolated-margin option. Bitget lists the XMRUSDT perpetual and shows both its index price and mark price on the contract page; you can open an account with code nexu888 through our Bitget page, where we also list its fees and supported products. Before you open a position, compare the funding rate and fees on the Bitget exchange profile with other venues, and keep leverage low enough that a 10% wick does not close your trade.
What we could not verify
The $300 million market-wide figure and the 515,730 XMR total come from SoSoValue via CoinDesk; we could not reproduce the full cross-exchange total from public endpoints. The Binance figures above are from Binance's own public API at the time stated and will have changed since.
Quick answers
Why is Monero open interest rising? Traders are opening more leveraged XMR futures positions as the price climbs back above $600. Open interest on Binance rose from 79,313 XMR on 14 October to 103,794 XMR on 21 October.
Did a similar setup happen before? Yes. In January 2026 open interest reached about $320 million and XMR then fell from about $790 to below $300 within about three weeks, according to CoinDesk.
Is XMR funding expensive right now? No. Binance's funding rate has stayed around 0.01% per eight hours, which is the standard baseline level.
Who is long and who is short? On Binance, about 59% of accounts are long, while top traders hold about 59% of their position volume short.
Does this affect XMR I hold in my own wallet? Not directly. Liquidations only close leveraged futures positions, but a cascade can push the market price down for a short time.
