XAUt gold reserves grow 59%: why $3.44 billion includes unsold tokens
The short answer
Tether reported on 4 November that gold backing XAUt reached about $3.44 billion at the end of September, with physical reserves up 59% since year-end. Its detailed table separates 709,323.66 tokens sold from 118,093.97 available for sale. For a holder, that distinction matters: the headline reserve value includes both categories, while the gold attributed to sold tokens was worth about $2.95 billion at the reporting date. Tether's reserve announcement.
The figures describe a quarter-end inventory. They do not measure purchases made on the announcement day, an exchange's current order book or a return earned by an individual holder. Our analysis starts with those different denominators, because the same reserve announcement can otherwise look like several incompatible measures of demand.

The reserve table has two sides
The issuer's table records 827,417.630 fine troy ounces of physical gold and 827,417.630000 XAUt in circulation. It states that each whole token is backed by one fine troy ounce. Within the token total, it lists units sold and units available for sale. These amounts reconcile:
709,323.66 + 118,093.97 = 827,417.63 XAUt.
That equality is useful for reading the report. A circulating-supply figure in this statement includes the available-for-sale category. Calling every circulating token a completed customer purchase would erase the distinction the issuer itself makes. PANews' report also describes sold tokens separately from tokens still available.

| Reported measure | Quarter-end figure | What to compare it with |
|---|---|---|
| Physical gold | 827,417.630 fine troy ounces | Total tokens in the same table |
| Tokens sold | 709,323.66 XAUt | Gold value attributed to sold tokens |
| Available for sale | 118,093.97 XAUt | Gold value attributed to this category |
| Gold valuation input | $4,157.41 per ounce | The report's date, not a live quote |
The table above uses Tether's figures. Dividing sold tokens by the total gives approximately 85.7%; the remainder is approximately 14.3%. These percentages are our arithmetic, rounded to one decimal place. They describe the composition of this reported inventory. They do not identify how much an exchange holds, how widely ownership is distributed or which customers have bought.
Where the $3.44 billion sits
Tether reports a total gold value of $3,439,914,329. It assigns $2,948,949,277 to gold held for tokens sold and $490,965,052 to gold backing tokens available for sale. The two values add to the reported total:
$2,948,949,277 + $490,965,052 = $3,439,914,329.
For readers scanning headlines, rounding the total to $3.44 billion is reasonable. Relabelling that entire amount as customer holdings would change its meaning. The more relevant reported value for sold tokens is about $2.95 billion. Both numbers can be accurate when the subject is named correctly.
A useful comparison therefore keeps units and dollars in separate columns. Gold ounces describe physical quantity. Token counts describe the corresponding units in the issuer's table. Dollar values depend on a valuation price. A larger dollar total can reflect changes in quantity, price or both; it cannot, by itself, establish the amount of new customer money received.
If you track tokenized gold in a spreadsheet, create separate fields for total backing, sold-token backing and available-for-sale backing. Preserve the date beside each field. This prevents a later update from silently changing the definition of an older row and producing a growth rate between unlike measures.
The 59%, 53% and 73% figures answer different questions
Tether's announcement reports physical reserves rising from 520,089 fine troy ounces at 31 December 2025 to approximately 827,418 at the latest reporting date. It describes that as 59% growth. Using the rounded ounce figures, the increase is approximately 307,329 ounces:
827,418 − 520,089 = 307,329.
Dividing that increase by 520,089 produces about 59.1%. This checks the rounded percentage in the announcement without turning the extra decimal into a new measurement. The starting and ending physical quantities are the inputs; the percentage is a calculation from them.
The issuer separately describes reserve market value rising from about $2.25 billion to $3.44 billion, or 53%. That is a dollar comparison. It also says customer holdings increased 73% since the start of the year. Those growth rates have different subjects. They should not be substituted for one another in a headline or treated as three estimates of the same series.
In particular, a 59% increase in physical backing is not a statement that XAUt's price rose 59%. A 73% increase in customer holdings is not a statement that every holder added 73% to a position. The announcement does not supply each customer's transactions, entry price or balance history. An individual return needs that individual's purchase and sale records.
The practical reading sequence is to identify the noun first: reserves, reserve value or customer holdings. Then identify the start and end dates. Only after those checks does the percentage belong in a comparison. This is especially useful when a short market alert drops the table and keeps only a large number.
The snapshot predates the announcement
The detailed figures are stated as of 30 September 2026 at 23:59 UTC, which is 1 October at 07:59 SGT. Tether published the announcement on 4 November. The calendar gap matters when deciding what the information can establish.
A reserve snapshot answers what the issuer reported for that instant. A new publication date does not move the inventory measurement forward to November. Likewise, the gold price of $4,157.41 per ounce is the valuation input in the report. It is unsuitable as a current executable quote unless a current market source independently confirms it.
Someone comparing an order screen with this report should retain both timestamps. Record the live quote's product, quote currency and observation time separately from the reserve date. If the numbers differ, first ask whether one is a historical valuation and the other a current trading price. The difference alone does not demonstrate a reserve discrepancy.
For a broader comparison of trading charges, the NexuAlpha rates page provides a separate reader tool. It should be used for its own subject. A fee comparison cannot update the gold inventory in this statement, and a reserve statement cannot quote the full cost of an order on a specific account.
Physical backing and an exchange balance need different checks
Tether says the gold is held in Switzerland and that a token represents an undivided ownership interest in gold on specified bars. That issuer-level statement concerns the asset backing. A reader using an exchange still needs to examine the product and account records through which the position is held.
Before placing an order, check the exact symbol and product description. If you intend to hold a token, confirm that the screen actually describes that token. Do not assume that every gold-related instrument has the same ownership, settlement or transfer arrangement simply because its name contains gold. This is a reader check, not a claim about a newly verified listing.
Next, inspect the available deposit and withdrawal options for the account you use. Match the asset and network at both ends before considering a transfer. This article has not verified current network availability or account eligibility on any venue, so it does not prescribe a particular transfer route or claim that a withdrawal is currently open.
For a trading position, keep the order's costs separate from the reserve figures. A quoted transaction fee, a spread and any applicable financing charge affect an individual execution. None of those amounts can be inferred from $3.44 billion in aggregate backing. Use the actual order information rather than applying the issuer's reserve growth percentage to a trade budget.
The rates comparison is a starting point for organising that cost check. Preserve the final quote and completed transaction record if you proceed. They answer the personal cost question that an issuer-wide reserve announcement leaves unanswered.
What would change the analysis next
A later reserve table with the same categories would permit a cleaner update: compare sold tokens with sold tokens, available inventory with available inventory, and physical ounces with physical ounces. If definitions change, record that change before calculating growth. A jump between differently defined columns is not a reliable demand series.
The present announcement does not establish intraday buying, exchange-specific balances or the distribution of customer holdings. It also does not tell us the realised price of a reader's position. Those gaps are specific to the question being asked; they are reasons to select the correct record, rather than to replace missing information with a market narrative.
Quick answers
Does $3.44 billion mean all the gold backs tokens already sold?
The detailed statement includes both sold tokens and tokens available for sale. It values gold attributed to sold tokens at about $2.95 billion, with about $491 million attributed to available-for-sale tokens.
Did XAUt's price rise 59%?
The 59% figure describes growth in physical reserves. It is not the reported token-price return.
What date should I put beside these figures?
Use the reserve snapshot: 1 October 2026 at 07:59 SGT, equivalent to 30 September at 23:59 UTC. Keep the 4 November announcement date separately.
Does this report verify an exchange withdrawal route?
It reports issuer-level backing. Current account eligibility, supported networks and withdrawal status require checks on the relevant account and product screen.
