Binance es seguro para comprar criptomonedas? You can buy, but our read found 218 of 531 coins with no open withdrawal route

8 min

The short answer

Is Binance safe for buying crypto? Buying still works, and Binance says it is covering the roughly $6.3 billion taken in the October 29 attack from its own money. The part a new buyer has to check is the exit. In our read of Binance's public coin list at 04:51 SGT on November 9 (20:51 UTC on November 8), 218 of the 531 coins marked as trading had no open withdrawal route on any network, and 204 of those 218 still accepted deposits.

So a coin can be easy to get into and impossible to move out for now. USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH and SOL each had open routes at that read. BCH, ATOM and PEPE had none. Check the exact coin and network before you pay, and treat Binance's statement that funds are safe as the company's statement, because the independent proof it promised is something we could not confirm.

What happened on October 29

TRM Labs says about $6.36 billion left Binance wallets on ten blockchains, most of it in about 20 minutes from 20:05 UTC. It calls this the largest crypto theft on record and attributes it with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit. TechCrunch reports that Binance and the FBI named the same group.

The figures differ by who is counting:

Who measuredFigureWhat it describes
Binance, October 30About $6.3 billionEstimated total impact
TRM LabsAbout $6.36 billionMoved out on ten chains
Elliptic$6.4 billion stolen, $2.85 billion frozen or seizedIts own tracing

Binance's first account pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop and said it found no evidence of a wallet private key leak. TRM reads the same event differently, as a compromise of hot wallet signing infrastructure. Binance promised a full technical post-mortem. Until you have read it, treat the cause as unsettled.

For a buyer the money question is who pays. Binance's update of November 4 says it set aside more than 100% of the needed funds from its own resources and had replenished about 98% of the impacted amount. The last 2% is slower because those tokens are less liquid. That is a company report. TechCrunch also reports users withdrew a net $3.6 billion in the first hours after accounts reopened, which tells you how other customers reacted.

The gap a buyer needs to check

Binance's November 6 notice says withdrawals reopen progressively and that deposits remain open. Those two facts create the trap. A deposit address appearing on screen says nothing about when that coin can leave.

Here is what the public list showed at our read. Counts are ours, from the same list behind Binance's network status page:

And for coins people commonly buy first:

CoinWithdrawal networks open
USDTBSC, Avalanche C-Chain, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Solana, TON, Tron
USDCBSC, Arbitrum, Base, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Solana, Sui
BTCBitcoin, BSC, Ethereum
ETHEthereum, BSC, Arbitrum, Base
SOLSolana, BSC
XRPXRP Ledger, BSC, Ethereum
DOGEDogecoin, BSC
ADA, LTC, DOTBSC only, native network closed
BCH, ATOM, PEPENone

The ADA row is the one that catches people. If your hardware wallet or another exchange only accepts native Cardano, a BSC route does not help you. These tables move as Binance reopens routes. On November 8 our previous count was 205 of 518, and the list itself grew by 13 coins, so compare the two with care. The withdrawal screen for your coin and network is the only reading that counts on the day you act.

What the reserves evidence shows

Binance took a new proof-of-reserves snapshot at 00:00 UTC on November 4. It covers 44 tokens, up from 10 in the previous one. The November 4 update said the zero-knowledge proof would take about 50 to 60 hours to generate, after which holders of covered tokens could verify that their balances are at least 1:1 backed.

Binance's reserves page does not open for automated readers, so we did not see the snapshot or confirm the proof. You can do what we could not: log in, open the proof-of-reserves page and check whether your coin is one of the 44. A coin left out of the list has no coverage in this snapshot, whatever else may back it.

Which company you deal with depends on your country

"Binance" is several legal entities. Co-CEO Yi He wrote on November 8 that, for historical compliance reasons, Binance has three local sites built independently of the main site and mostly handling local-currency trading. The post does not name them. Binance TR, covered in our Türkiye guide, runs at its own address.

Argentina. The securities regulator's PSAV register lists Binance Services Latinoamérica S.A. de C.V., with the site binance.ar. Our Binance profile records it as registration 76 and describes it as a registration, not a full exchange licence. The regulator set the rules for these providers in General Resolution 1058.

Mexico. In a 2021 joint statement reported by IDC Online, Banxico, the finance ministry and the banking regulator said virtual assets are not legal tender and that Mexican financial institutions are not authorized to offer them to the public. Do not read a local payment option as a sign of government backing. We did not find a newer official text in this run.

Colombia, Chile and Peru. Our licence table has no Binance row for these countries, and we did not check their regulators in this run, so we make no claim about them.

Before you sign up, confirm the company name in your account's terms. That name decides which rules you can use if something goes wrong.

If you buy through P2P

Many Latin American buyers use P2P. Binance's guide says the platform secures the seller's crypto in escrow when an order is placed, while you pay the seller directly through a bank or a payment app. Three rules from that guide cost people money when ignored:

  • Do not click "Transferred, Notify Seller" unless you have actually paid.
  • If you have paid, do not click Cancel unless the seller has refunded you.
  • Cancelling three orders in a day suspends "Buy Crypto" for the rest of that day.

If the crypto does not arrive within the release window, use Appeal and include screenshots. Our P2P guide for Argentina walks through it, and the Mexico USDT guide compares SPEI, P2P and card.

Yi He also warned on November 8 against moving in "a friend's discounted USDT" or money that "just passed through" someone's account. The post says such addresses are flagged before funds arrive, that law enforcement may freeze them, and that Binance has no power to unfreeze. A cheap offer from outside the platform can cost you the whole amount.

Fake compensation messages

Any large hack brings fake refund offers, and Binance has asked users to rely only on its official channels. The notices we opened describe no form for you to claim anything: the stated plan is that Binance absorbs the loss, so a message offering "compensation" for a fee or a login is a reason to stop.

Binance's phishing guide lists fake sites, spoofed emails and SMS, and impersonated support staff. An anti-phishing code adds a code you choose to genuine emails and SMS; if it is missing or wrong, treat the message as an attack.

Checks before your first purchase

  1. Look up your coin and network. Open the withdrawal screen or the network status page before you pay. If the route you need is closed, you are buying something you cannot move yet.
  2. Prefer a coin with several open routes if you plan to withdraw soon. USDT and USDC had the most at our read.
  3. Set up 2FA and the anti-phishing code first. P2P requires identity verification and at least one 2FA device anyway.
  4. Turn on the withdrawal whitelist. Withdrawals can then go only to addresses you listed.
  5. Buy a small amount and withdraw it. A test on your exact network tells you more than any statement.
  6. Hold on the exchange only what you can afford to have stuck for a while. That applies to every venue, since a closed route can arrive without warning.

A small spot buy is cheap to test: at the standard 0.10% in our fee data, $500 costs $0.50 in trading fees, plus any network fee when you withdraw.

Is another exchange different?

The checks are the same on any venue, and this hack does not tell you another exchange is safer. We did not compare reserves or security records here. If you are comparing costs, the standard spot rate is 0.10% taker on Bitget and OKX as well. Our data shows a 60% fee rebate on Bitget, settled daily, so a $1,000 spot trade costs $1.00 and returns $0.60. On OKX the rebate share is 20%, settled hourly, or $0.20 on the same trade.

What we could not verify

  • Whether the zero-knowledge proof for the November 4 snapshot is finished, and which 44 tokens it covers.
  • The final cause of the attack. Binance's post-mortem is the document to read when it is complete.
  • A reopening date for any closed route. Binance's notices give none.
  • The regulatory position in Colombia, Chile or Peru, and any Mexican rule newer than the 2021 statement.
  • How each local Binance site holds customer assets, and whether the recovery terms read the same on all of them.

Quick answers

Is my money on Binance insured?

We found no government scheme named in the sources we opened. Binance says it covers these losses from its SAFU fund and company funds. That is a company commitment.

Can I still deposit and buy on Binance?

Binance's November 6 notice says deposit services remain open, and 516 of the 531 trading coins had a deposit route at our read. Withdrawals are the part still limited.

Which coin is easiest to move out right now?

At our read USDT had nine open networks and USDC eight. Check again before paying, because the list changes.

Should I sell what I already hold there?

That depends on your own position, and we make no price call. A practical first step is to check whether your coin has an open route, then test it with a small withdrawal.
