ETH Breaks Below $2,100 as $745 Million Is Liquidated in an Hour: Ether Fell 2.5 Times as Far as Bitcoin
The short answer
Ether dropped from $2,222 to $2,063 on OKX between 05:44 and 05:55 SGT on November 9, and most of that move came in a single minute. CoinGlass counted $745 million of contract liquidations across exchanges in the hour to 06:21 SGT, $715 million of it from longs, according to PANews. By 06:42 SGT ETH had climbed back to $2,124.86, still 4.9% lower than 24 hours earlier.
If you hold a leveraged long, compare your liquidation price with this morning's low on your own venue. The low was not the same everywhere: $2,063.29 on OKX spot, $2,056.99 on Bitget perpetuals and $2,050.32 on Binance perpetuals. We found no confirmed cause for the drop in anything we opened.

The fall, minute by minute
Odaily reported ETH under $2,200 at 05:51 SGT and under $2,100 at 05:55, both citing OKX prices. PANews carried the same break with its own intraday figure of 6.48%. The one-minute candles from OKX's public market API show how it unfolded:

| Time (SGT) | ETH on OKX | BTC on OKX | What moved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 05:44 close | $2,222.12 | $75,611.0 | Quiet tape before the first selling |
| 05:50 close | $2,211.53 | $75,318.7 | Small slide in both |
| 05:51 close | $2,192.34 | $75,250.1 | ETH breaks $2,200, BTC barely moves |
| 05:54 close | $2,160.50 | $74,920.8 | ETH down 2.31% from 05:50, BTC down 0.53% |
| 05:55 low | $2,063.29 | $73,500.0 | Both hit their lows in the same minute |
| 05:55 close | $2,111.63 | $73,766.8 | Half of the minute's ETH drop already reversed |
| 05:57 high | $2,140.90 | $74,278.9 | ETH bounces 3.76% from the low |
| 06:42 last | $2,124.86 | $74,444.3 | Roughly flat for 45 minutes |
From the 05:44 close to the low, ETH lost 7.15% and BTC 2.79%, so Ether fell about 2.5 times as far. The gap opened before the flush. In the four minutes to 05:54, ETH was already falling more than four times as fast as BTC.
Volume shows how abrupt the 05:55 minute was. OKX traded 24,879 ETH spot in that one minute, against an average of about 34 ETH a minute from 05:40 to 05:44. That is roughly 730 times the earlier pace. On Binance perpetuals the same minute carried 297,870 ETH, and price there went from $2,158.79 to $2,050.32, a further 5.02% inside 60 seconds. Binance then saw a second, shallower dip to $2,097.27 at 06:07 SGT.
ETH longs on Binance took the largest share
Our liquidations page tracks Binance and OKX. At 06:40 SGT it showed $389 million liquidated in the previous hour across 21,677 orders, with $383 million from longs and $5.91 million from shorts. That makes longs 98.5% of what we observed.
ETH on Binance was $181 million of that hour, about twice BTC on Binance at $90.2 million. The largest single order we recorded was a $48.16 million ETH long on Binance at 05:55 SGT, the same amount and pair as the largest order PANews cites from CoinGlass. Its total is larger than ours because it covers all exchanges, while our feed covers two, and Binance's stream sends at most one order per symbol per second.
Binance's open interest data lines up with that picture. ETH open interest fell from 2,374,602 ETH at 05:50 to 2,275,200 ETH at 06:00, a drop of 99,402 ETH or 4.19%. At about $2,126 per ETH, those contracts were worth roughly $211 million, close to the $181 million in ETH liquidations we logged. Our reading is that forced closes made up much of the drop. Open interest also nets out new positions and voluntary exits, so the match is rough.

Bitcoin's open interest behaved differently. It fell 1.39% by 06:00 and kept sliding to 93,829 BTC by 06:25, 2.86% below the 05:50 level. ETH open interest had already stabilized around 2.28 million ETH by then.
PANews and Odaily both reported one named casualty. The Hyperliquid long of the trader known as Machi Big Brother, about 540 ETH worth about $1.18 million, was fully liquidated at 05:51 SGT at an average of about $2,192, leaving the account at zero. That price sits in the first leg of the fall, four minutes before the low.
How unusual the hour was
The day before gives the scale. PANews, also citing CoinGlass, reported $69.15 million of liquidations across the market for the 24 hours up to its November 8 update, with $45.04 million of that from longs. This morning's single hour was more than 10 times that full day ($745 million against $69.15 million, our arithmetic). PANews also put about 137,000 traders liquidated over 24 hours, with $343 million in ETH and $229 million in BTC.
Other coins went with it, though far less. Our 24-hour table at 06:40 SGT showed SOL at $15.2 million and XRP at $11.0 million on Binance, against $185 million for ETH on the same venue.
What a stop order would have done
A stop that turns into a market order fills at whatever is available once it triggers. Take a stop on a Binance ETH perpetual long set at $2,100. The 05:55 minute opened at $2,158.79 and touched $2,050.32, so a fill could have landed anywhere from the trigger down to that low. The worst case is $49.68 below the trigger, or 2.37%. On a $10,000 position that is about $237 more than the stop level suggested, before fees. A stop-limit order avoids that gap, but it may not fill at all, and price closed that minute at $2,106.37 before dipping again to $2,097.27 at 06:07. Those are the two trade-offs to weigh before the next fast move.
What we could not confirm: the cause
None of the reports we opened gives a reason for the drop. The Odaily and PANews items are price alerts. Two other stories were running at the same time, and neither report connects itself to crypto:
- South Korea's Upbit had been in server maintenance since 02:00 KST. After finding instability while reopening, it moved the restart of its KRW, BTC and USDT markets to 07:00 KST, which is 06:00 SGT. On that schedule its markets were still closed during the 05:51 to 05:55 fall. We cannot show that this thinned liquidity elsewhere.
- CNBC reported that Nvidia's board opened an independent investigation related to its CEO, and ChainCatcher put Nvidia down more than 2% in off-hours trading. No source we read links that to the ETH move.
We also have no data on who sold first. Treat any single-cause explanation you see today with caution until it names a transaction or a venue.
What to check if you hold leverage
Measure your distance to the low. On Binance perpetuals, ETH went from $2,210.51 at the 05:50 close to $2,050.32, which is 7.25%. A 10x long entered at that close would have lost about 72.5% of its margin at the low before fees. At about 14x the loss reaches 100%, and liquidation comes earlier because of maintenance margin. Run the same sum with your own entry and leverage.
Check the rule your venue actually uses. OKX's forced liquidation guide says liquidation triggers when the maintenance margin ratio reaches 100% or less, and that the process runs in stages: open orders are cancelled, the position is reduced, and then forced liquidation follows. That first stage matters if you were relying on a resting order to save the position, because the system may remove it. The guide is on OKX's help site under "Forced Liquidation FAQ". See our OKX page for its fees and account types.
Decide margin mode before you open. OKX's help page on cross and isolated modes states that an open position cannot be switched between them. Pick the mode when you enter.
Check how you would add margin. If your collateral sits on Binance, your options depend on which withdrawal routes are open. Binance reopened HYPE and APT withdrawals on November 8, according to Odaily, and our count of closed routes shows why you should look at the withdrawal screen for your own coin and network before you need it.
Look at funding before you add. At about 06:40 SGT our funding rates page and the venues' APIs showed ETH at -0.0071% on Binance, -0.0103% on OKX and -0.0004% on Bitget. OKX's last settled rate was +0.0019%, so the sign flipped. Longs receive and shorts pay when the rate is negative. At -0.0103%, a $10,000 long would receive about $1.03 at the 08:00 SGT settlement if the rate held, and it can change before then. BTC funding stayed slightly positive at +0.0053% on Bitget.
Our earlier piece on a $913 million liquidation day walks through how to read the long and short split on such days.
Your trading fees still add up on a day like this
Every entry, exit and re-entry costs a fee. On Bitget, a $10,000 perpetual trade at the 0.06% taker fee costs $6, and a 60% rebate returns $3.60, settled daily. On OKX the same trade at 0.05% costs $5, and the 20% rebate returns $1.00, settled hourly. These are shares of the fee you paid on one trade, using the rates in our partner registry.
What to watch next
Watch whether ETH open interest on Binance rebuilds from about 2.28 million ETH, and whether funding stays negative at the 08:00 SGT settlement. Upbit's return also matters, since deposits and withdrawals there resume only after trading restarts and backlogged orders clear. Odaily's weekly calendar for November 9 to 15 lists the October CPI release.
