Bitcoin ETF Outflows Today: $381 Million Leaves After a $1.07 Billion Inflow Streak, and BTC Is Stuck Near $82,000

6 min

The short answer

US spot bitcoin ETFs lost about $381 million on Thursday, 22 October, according to preliminary SoSoValue data cited by CoinDesk, ending a three-day inflow streak of roughly $1.07 billion that had just flipped October's flows positive. Bitcoin dipped below $81,000 overnight and was trading at 81,630 USDT on Binance's BTCUSDT perpetual at 12:51 SGT on Friday, 23 October, down 1.4% in 24 hours and sitting almost exactly on its 50-day average. For traders, the message is a market without a strong buyer: funding is only mildly positive, and the last 24 hours cleared about $385 million of leveraged longs.

What happened to the ETF flows this week

The week started strongly. On Monday, 19 October, US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $526.7 million, all of it through BlackRock's IBIT, the best day for the group since 22 September, according to Decrypt's ETF tracker. On Wednesday they added another $524.8 million. Across Monday to Wednesday the funds gathered about $1.07 billion; CoinDesk, using SoSoValue data, put the three-day figure at $1.08 billion.

That streak mattered because October had been negative. The funds had shed about $615 million through the previous Friday, after two weeks in which roughly $910 million left. The three good sessions flipped October to a net gain of about $460 million. Cumulative net inflows since the January 2024 launch stood at $58.4 billion, with about $100.8 billion in total net assets.

Then Thursday turned around. CoinDesk reported $381 million of outflows, based on preliminary SoSoValue numbers. Final issuer-by-issuer figures can still be revised, but if the number holds, October's net gain shrinks to roughly $80 million (our arithmetic: about $460 million minus $381 million).

Ether ETFs remain the weak spot. They took in $14.9 million on Wednesday, ending a five-day outflow run that drained about $389 million, but they are still down about $1.07 billion for the month.

Why bitcoin did not rally on a billion dollars of inflows

Bitcoin fell 2.4% to about $81,470 on Wednesday even as money was flowing in, Decrypt reported. Three forces explain the gap.

The inflows are still too slow for a big trend. CoinDesk compared the current pace with bitcoin's three steep rallies since the ETFs launched (January to March 2024, August to December 2024, and April to July 2025). In those 199 trading days the funds averaged about $235 million a day and logged six days of $1 billion or more. Since 1 July the average is about $86 million a day, with no single $1 billion day. A three-day burst does not change that average much, and Thursday's outflow erased a third of it.

Macro is pulling in the other direction. In early Asian trading on Friday the Japanese yen climbed to 156.07 per US dollar, its strongest since 18 September, after hotter Japanese inflation data raised expectations of more Bank of Japan rate hikes. A stronger yen tends to squeeze carry trades that fund risk assets. The yen later slipped back toward 157, and bitcoin recovered to nearly $82,000 alongside a rebound in gold, Asian stocks and Nasdaq futures. Oil also stayed high, with WTI futures near $100, which keeps inflation worries alive.

Leverage was leaning long. CoinDesk reported about $435 million of crypto futures liquidations in 24 hours, including $385 million of long positions, as bitcoin tested its 50-day moving average. When most of the forced selling hits longs, it tells you traders were positioned for a bounce that did not come.

The numbers on the exchanges right now

Funding is positive on all three venues, meaning longs still pay shorts, but the rates are small. That fits a market where traders lean slightly bullish without paying up for it. The price is within about 0.2% of the 50-day average, the level CoinDesk flagged as the near-term momentum test.

What this means for you

If you hold spot bitcoin, the ETF data says demand is returning but unevenly: big days are followed by outflow days. That has been the pattern since July, and it is consistent with a slow grind rather than a sharp run in either direction. Nothing in this week's flows changes a long-term plan.

If you trade futures, the useful signals are concrete:

  1. Watch the 50-day average. Bitcoin is sitting on it. A clean break below with rising liquidations of longs on our liquidation board would mean the bounce traders were wrong again; a hold with funding still near zero would mean leverage has been cleaned out.
  2. Check funding before holding a position for days. At +0.007% to +0.009% per eight hours, a long pays a little every interval. It is cheap now, but it rises fast when traders crowd in. Our funding-rate board compares Binance and OKX in one view.
  3. Size for the macro calendar. Yen moves and oil near $100 hit risk assets at Asian and US opens. Lower leverage gives your stop room when those moves arrive.
  4. Read the ETF number the next morning. The Thursday figure is preliminary. Final issuer data, especially IBIT's line, tells you whether the outflow was one fund or broad selling.
  5. Cut your trading costs. Active futures traders pay fees on every entry and exit. Bitget lists the BTCUSDT perpetual and signing up on Bitget with code nexu888 returns up to 60% of trading fees, which matters more than any single trade when you churn positions around a level like this.

What we could not verify

Thursday's $381 million outflow is preliminary SoSoValue data reported by CoinDesk; we did not see final per-fund numbers, so we cannot say which ETFs drove it. Liquidation totals differ between data providers, and the 24-hour figure quoted here is CoinDesk's at the time of its report. We did not use any price forecasts.

Quick answers

How much did bitcoin ETFs lose today? About $381 million on Thursday, 22 October, based on preliminary SoSoValue data reported by CoinDesk.

How big was the inflow streak before that? About $1.07 billion from Monday to Wednesday (CoinDesk's SoSoValue figure is $1.08 billion), led by $526.7 million into IBIT on Monday.

Are October ETF flows still positive? They were up about $460 million after Wednesday. Subtracting Thursday's preliminary outflow leaves roughly $80 million, by our arithmetic.

Why is bitcoin not rising with ETF inflows? Inflows since July average about $86 million a day, far below the roughly $235 million a day seen in past steep rallies, while a stronger yen, high oil and long liquidations weighed on price.

Where is bitcoin trading now? 81,630 USDT on Binance's perpetual at 12:51 SGT on 23 October, down 1.4% in 24 hours and close to its 50-day average.

Is funding telling traders anything? Funding is slightly positive on Binance, OKX and Bitget (about +0.007% to +0.009% per eight hours), so longs still pay, but not much.
