Why Are Chip Stocks Falling? Lam Research Warning Sends SOX Down 6.7% and SOXL Perps Down 21%: What Traders Should Check

6 min

The short answer

Chip stocks fell on Thursday, 22 October 2026, because Lam Research said near-term supply chain constraints were holding back its December-quarter outlook, and that warning landed on a market already nervous about memory oversupply and AI spending. The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) closed 6.72% lower, Lam itself lost 11.76%, and the 3x leveraged SOXL fund dropped 20.47%. On Binance, the SOXLUSDT perpetual was down 21.7% over 24 hours with $3.23 billion in volume, while bitcoin slid about 4% and crypto long liquidations passed $970 million on the venues we track.

What happened on 22 October, in numbers

Lam Research reported its fiscal first quarter of 2027 on 21 October. The quarter itself was strong: record revenue of $8.22 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.20, both above analyst estimates. The problem was the guide. Lam forecast December-quarter revenue of $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million, and non-GAAP EPS of $2.33, plus or minus $0.15. Chief financial officer Doug Bettinger said on the call that the revenue guide "would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints," and declined to say how much revenue was held back.

Investors read that as a sign that even the companies selling the tools for AI chips cannot ship as fast as demand allows, and they sold the whole group. Closing moves on 22 October, from Yahoo Finance chart data:

Applied Materials closed 8.16% lower and ASML 6.93% lower, so equipment makers took the heaviest hit, followed by chip designers and memory names. The S&P 500 ended 1.21% down.

Why the selling spread beyond Lam

Three things were already weighing on chips before the Lam guide:

  1. Memory worries. CNBC reported that memory stocks had sold off over the past week on concerns about oversupply and weaker demand in coming years. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang pushed back in a CNBC interview on Thursday, saying he sees no memory glut by 2029 and that "you can always use more" memory. The market did not take his word for it on the day.
  2. AI spending doubts. CNBC's morning newsletter noted chip stocks were "once again under pressure" before the open, with neocloud names CoreWeave and Nebius indicated more than 5% lower and Nvidia, Intel and Qualcomm down premarket.
  3. Macro noise. The same newsletter flagged Tesla's disappointing forecasts, rising Brent and WTI crude, and fresh Middle East tension, all of which push traders out of high-valuation growth stocks.

Lam's comment gave the sellers a concrete reason. A supply bottleneck caps how much revenue the AI build-out can deliver next quarter, and that hit the stocks priced for the fastest growth.

How the move showed up on crypto exchanges

Crypto traders now hold a lot of US stock exposure through stock perpetual futures and tokenized shares, and these products kept trading after Wall Street closed. Binance's public futures data, read at 20:48 UTC on 22 October, showed:

Binance perpetualLast price24h change24h volume (USDT)
SOXLUSDT80.86-21.68%3.23 billion
SNDKUSDT (SanDisk)1,234.08-10.83%2.24 billion
AMDUSDT506.71-8.64%144 million
NVDAUSDT212.51-4.59%195 million

Two details matter here. First, SOXLUSDT traded more than $3 billion in a day, more than many large crypto pairs, which tells you how many crypto users were positioned in leveraged chip exposure. Second, the perp kept sliding after the US close: it sat at 80.86 while the SOXL fund itself closed at $82.11. A stock perp follows the underlying, but between sessions it is priced by the traders on the exchange, so overnight moves can run ahead of the next open.

Liquidations: crypto longs took the bigger hit

Bitcoin fell about 4% to roughly $81,200 and ether about 4.6% to near $2,380 over the same 24 hours. Our liquidation tracker, which counts observed Binance and OKX liquidations, showed $1.01 billion liquidated in the 24 hours to 20:42 UTC, of which $970 million were long positions and only $40 million shorts. The largest symbols were SOL, ETH and BTC perpetuals on OKX, each above $200 million. Leveraged chip bets added to the pile: SOXLUSDT alone accounted for $8.7 million of liquidations on Binance, and SanDisk and SOXL perps were still among the most liquidated symbols in the last hour of the window.

The pattern is the familiar one in a risk-off day: traders who were long both AI stocks and crypto with leverage got squeezed on both sides at once.

What to check if you trade stock perps or tokenized shares

  • Look at your liquidation price, not just your entry. SOXL is already a 3x fund. A 10x perp on SOXL is roughly 30x exposure to the chip index, so a 3% index move can wipe out the margin.
  • Remember the perp trades when Nasdaq is shut. Earnings from Micron, Nvidia or Lam's peers, or a big overnight headline, can move the perp before the stock market opens. Set stop orders accordingly.
  • Check funding. When everyone is long a hot theme, longs pay funding. After a crash, funding can flip, which changes the cost of holding a position for days.
  • Know what you own. A perp is a derivative with no shares behind it; a tokenized stock is backed by the underlying share through its issuer. Our tokenized stocks hub explains the difference and lists live prices, and the NVDA page shows where Nvidia trades as a token or perp.

How to act on this

If you want to trade the chip rebound or hedge a long with a short, keep leverage low and size so a 20% overnight gap does not close your position. Binance lists the SOXL, NVDA, AMD and SanDisk perps quoted above. If you open an account through nexualpha.com/go/binance with code 11350287, 25% of your trading fees are returned automatically, which matters when you trade an active, high-volume product like SOXLUSDT. Compare the other venues that list stock products on our tokenized stocks hub before you choose.

What we could not verify

We did not have Lam Research's own press release text; the guidance figures and CFO quote come from Yahoo Finance's report on the call.

Quick answers

Why did Lam Research stock fall even though it beat estimates? Because its December-quarter revenue guide of $8.6 billion was held back by near-term supply chain constraints, and investors care more about the next quarter than the last one.

How much did semiconductor stocks fall on 22 October 2026? The PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 6.72%. Lam lost 11.76%, AMD 8.10%, Micron 6.26% and Nvidia 4.40%.

Why did SOXL drop more than 20%? SOXL aims for three times the daily move of a semiconductor index, so a 6-7% index drop turns into roughly a 20% fall.

Did the chip selloff hit bitcoin? Bitcoin fell about 4% over the same 24 hours and crypto long liquidations passed $970 million on Binance and OKX, so risk appetite fell across both markets.

Do stock perps on crypto exchanges trade after the US close? Yes. SOXLUSDT kept trading after Wall Street shut and was below SOXL's closing price that evening.
