Gemini Verify Identity: Documents, Selfie Scan, How Long It Takes and How to Fix a Stuck Verification (October 2026)

6 min

The short answer

To verify your identity on Gemini, open the Account icon in the app (or continue the sign-up flow on the website), go to "Verify your identity", upload a clear photo of a valid, unexpired government ID and complete a biometric selfie scan. US residents also enter their Social Security Number, which Gemini says it must collect under the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money-laundering rules. Once Gemini approves the check, full trading and transfer features are switched on and you receive an email titled "Your identity has been verified".

Step by step: Gemini identity verification

Gemini's retail onboarding instructions list what to have ready before you start: a smartphone, a valid photo ID that has not expired, and optionally a laptop or tablet. The process then runs like this:

  1. Check that Gemini serves your country. Open Gemini's Areas of Availability page first. Verification cannot succeed for a country Gemini does not support, and the help center tells you to confirm this before signing up.
  2. Register at exchange.gemini.com/register. Use your own email address and mobile number. Gemini specifically warns that family members must not share a phone number or email address.
  3. Select your country of residence, not your nationality. The Location field is about where you live. Picking your passport country when you live elsewhere is one of the most common reasons the ID and address checks do not match.
  4. Enter personal details. Name, date of birth and address, plus SSN for US residents. Gemini explains that as a New York State-chartered trust company it is required by law to collect the SSN (or SIN) for Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money-laundering compliance.
  5. Upload your photo ID. Take a live photo, not a scan. Gemini says scans are not accepted, the document must be fully readable and unobstructed, and you must photograph both sides if asked.
  6. Complete the biometric face scan. The selfie confirms you are the person on the ID and helps protect the account against identity fraud.
  7. Confirm your email. Find the email "Please confirm your email address" and press "Confirm email".
  8. Wait for approval. When verification is done you receive "Your identity has been verified" and can sign in with full features.

If you already started registration in the app, the same step lives under the Account icon, the head-and-shoulders silhouette, in the "Verify your identity" section.

Which documents Gemini accepts

Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.

Where you liveAccepted photo IDExtra step
United StatesState-issued ID, driver's license, passport or passport card, Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)SSN required; selfie scan
Outside the USPassport from your country of citizenship, and/or national ID or driver's license from your country of residence as registered with GeminiSelfie scan
SingaporeCan verify through MyInfo by logging in with SingPass, without uploading ID photosNo upload needed when MyInfo is used

Every ID must be valid and unexpired. Gemini states plainly that it cannot accept expired documents, so renew first if your card is close to its end date.

The fast route for US users: Plaid Layer

US residents may see an option called "Verify yourself instantly with your Plaid account" after entering their phone number. If you have linked a bank through Plaid before, Gemini can pre-fill your name, address, date of birth and SSN from that data, show your previously linked bank accounts, and let you edit anything out of date before you submit. To qualify you must be a US resident, have linked a financial account with Plaid before, have complete identity data on file with Plaid, and use the same phone number that Plaid holds. Everyone else goes through the manual flow above. The Plaid step speeds up data entry; you still continue to identity verification afterwards.

How long Gemini verification takes

Gemini does not publish a fixed review time. Its help article on the question says the team works through applications during high-volume periods and asks you to upload documents that are unexpired and clearly visible, not blurry and showing all four corners. In practice, a clean ID photo and matching personal details are what speed up approval; a blurry or cropped image sends the file back to the queue.

The one thing that reliably makes it slower: opening a second account. Gemini says that if you hit problems you should not register again with a different email address, because that can delay your review further. Use the support request form instead.

Fixes for the most common verification problems

The upload button does nothing in the app. Gemini's advice is to switch to a web browser on a desktop or laptop and upload there. If that also fails, refresh the page, clear cookies and cache, or try a different browser.

Your ID was rejected. Check three things: it is not expired, the photo shows all four corners with no glare, and it is a live photo rather than a scan or photocopy. Avoid using flash in a dark room, which Gemini notes can create glare that hides details on the card.

Your country or address does not match. Re-check that the Location you chose is your country of residence. A non-US national ID or driver's license must come from the country of residence you registered with Gemini.

Support asked you for a "verification photo". This is a separate check that a support agent may request before handling a ticket. Gemini wants one single photo showing your full face, the same ID you registered with (or the newly issued one if it expired), and a handwritten note with the current date and a word or number Gemini gives you. Save it as JPEG, JPG or HEIC and upload it only through the SendSafely link Gemini sends, which follows the format gemini.sendsafely.com/dropzone. Do not email it as an attachment and never send it to anyone else.

You never got the registration email. Add hello@gemini.com and support@gemini.com to your contacts, which Gemini recommends for onboarding updates, and check spam.

How to act on this

Gemini is a New York-chartered trust company with a strict KYC flow. If it does not serve your country, or you mainly want lower trading fees and derivatives, compare other venues on our exchange list, which shows KYC levels, fees and official sign-up links for each platform side by side. OKX, for example, also runs ID verification; if you register through nexualpha.com/go/okx with code nexu888, part of your trading fees is returned automatically. Our OKX registration guide walks through its verification screens, and the Bybit KYC levels explainer shows how limits change by level on another large venue. Before choosing, check the fee and availability columns on the exchange list for your country.

What we could not verify

Gemini does not publish a typical approval time or per-country document list beyond the categories above, so we cannot give a guaranteed number of minutes or days.
