Vitalik says ETH's burn can sit below 10% of break-even for good. Over the past 30 days it ran at about 3%

7 min

The short answer

Vitalik Buterin wrote on X at 20:06 SGT on November 8 that Ethereum should focus on ETH as a store of value, not as a fee-burning token, and that nobody should "feel sad if fee burn is < 10% of breakeven indefinitely." His post keeps EIP-1559 and its burn in place. No protocol change comes with it, so nothing about your ETH balance changes today.

The number behind the argument is smaller than many holders assume. Data from ultrasound.money at 20:53 SGT shows ETH burning at an annualized 33,100 ETH on the 30-day window, against issuance of about 1,089,120 ETH. By our arithmetic that is 3.04% of break-even. On the last 24 hours it was 0.33%. Vitalik's 10% line is already well above where the burn sits.

ETH traded at 2,237.84 on OKX's perpetual at 20:53 SGT, down 0.14% from its level 24 hours earlier, with the post 47 minutes old.

What Vitalik actually said

The post gives three reasons. The fee-burn case "never was as strong as it seemed." Optimizing for it would push Ethereum to work in ways that are hard to square with decentralization and capture resistance. And a store-of-value goal fits what Ethereum already does differently from other chains, which he sums up as decentralization and CROPS.

Foresight News's summary expands CROPS as censorship resistance and capture resistance, open source, privacy and security. Vitalik's practical point is stability. In his words, the store-of-value category is where those properties stop being "an unneeded extra" and become "a pragmatic strength from the perspective of people putting in their assets." He adds that "in the era of AI disruption, stability will be highly valued."

Foresight's summary and the PANews report carry the supporting figures:

He compared the fee-maximizing version of Ethereum to a large company such as L'Oréal, with heavy intervention in governance over many years. Foresight also reports his concern that chasing fees would raise gas prices and push out some of the users who most need privacy and security.

ChainCatcher's report carries the same position on EIP-1559 and the 10% line.

The burn numbers, window by window

"Break-even" here means burn equal to new issuance, so that ETH supply stops growing. That is our reading, because the post does not define the word. The table uses ultrasound.money's figures at 20:53 SGT; the percentage column is our division of annualized burn by annualized issuance.

Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.

WindowETH burnedValue at the timeAnnualized burn (ETH)Share of issuance

Last 7 days287.29$659,09214,9901.37%
Last 30 days2,718.66$6.24 million33,1003.04%
Since the Merge2,020,198$4.57 billion486,96554.6%

Three things stand out.

The gap to his 10% line. Issuance of 1,089,120 ETH a year works out to about 2,984 ETH a day, so 10% of break-even is about 298 ETH a day. The 30-day average burn was about 91 ETH a day, and the last 24 hours burned under 10.

The distance from the old peak. Against the $180 million single-day burn Vitalik cites, the last 24 hours' $22,231 is smaller by a factor of about 8,100.

The change in the long-run average. Burn has offset 54.6% of issuance since the Merge, while the recent windows show 3% or less. That gap is the backdrop to his post. The same source puts the total burned since EIP-1559 at about 4.64 million ETH, worth about $13.12 billion when burned.

What the current numbers mean for supply

At the 30-day pace, ETH supply grows by about 0.86% a year, per ultrasound.money. In coins, that is about 1,056,020 ETH a year after burn (1,089,120 minus 33,100). At 2,237.84 that is about $2.36 billion of new supply a year, or about 0.86% of CoinGecko's $273.3 billion market cap.

So the "ultrasound money" pitch, where burn outruns issuance and supply shrinks, does not describe the last 30 days. Since the Merge the annual growth rate is 0.33%, which is lower because burn ran higher in earlier periods.

The 700,000 ETH figure can be checked the same way. It equals 64.3% of annualized issuance of 1,089,120 ETH, which sits close to the "about two-thirds" cut to validators that Foresight reports. The summary does not show his working, so treat that match as our arithmetic. Staked balances are about 44.56 million ETH, or 36.5% of the 122.2 million supply, so issuance alone pays about 2.44% a year before tips and MEV. Taking 700,000 ETH out would leave about 0.87%. Vitalik brings this up as a reason to avoid that path. Nobody has proposed it.

How the market looked when the post was 47 minutes old

The public exchange data at 20:53 SGT showed a quiet market. Two venues quoted almost the same price and had very similar 24-hour changes.

Article table: scroll horizontally, or focus the table area and use the arrow keys.

VenueETH perpetual price24-hour change24-hour volume
OKX2,237.84-0.14%about 529,253 ETH
Bitget2,237.99-0.14%about 130,937 ETH

Open interest on Bitget's contract stood at about 801,937 ETH, or roughly $1.79 billion at that price. Funding on both venues was positive but small. A $10,000 long would pay less than $1 per 8 hours on either one, so leveraged longs were not paying much to stay in the trade. These figures describe a single moment and say nothing about where ETH goes next.

What he wants built instead

The store-of-value case, as Foresight summarizes it, comes down to surviving for a long time. The work he lists:

  • Conservative technical choices, with core parts of the protocol frozen over time and fewer political fights at the protocol layer.
  • Safer and more private holding, through multisig and the Kohaku wallet work.
  • FOCIL, so that block builders cannot stop a user's transfer.
  • Less dependence on outside infrastructure.
  • More RWAs and decentralized assets issued natively on layer 1, which he says make holding ETH more useful.

He also admits a conflict that remains open: demands such as faster block times still pull against decentralization.

What to check if you hold or trade ETH

This is an argument from Ethereum's co-founder, with no vote or upgrade attached. Vitalik does not control the protocol alone, and the post sets no date. A few checks are still worth doing.

  1. Reread your own thesis. If you hold ETH because burn would make supply shrink, compare that with the 0.86% annual growth above. If your reason is staking yield or settlement use, the post does not touch it directly.
  2. Watch the burn gauge yourself on ultrasound.money. A 24-hour reading swings a lot, so the 30-day line tells you more.
  3. Look at funding before adding leverage. At 20:53 SGT the ETH perpetual rate was 0.0073% per 8 hours on Bitget and 0.0010% on OKX. On a $10,000 long that is about $0.73 and $0.10 per 8 hours, with the next settlement at 00:00 SGT on November 9. Our funding rates page tracks the same rate across venues, and our liquidations page shows forced closures.
  4. Note the context. Spot Ether ETFs were already seeing outflows before this post, which we covered in the $93 million Ether ETF outflow. The post does not explain that flow.

Trading costs add up faster than funding at these rates. A $10,000 ETH perpetual taker order costs $6 on Bitget at 0.06%, and its 60% rebate returns $3.60, settled daily. On OKX the same order costs $5 at 0.05%, and the 20% rebate returns $1, settled hourly. The code for both is nexu888. Sign-up paths are on our Bitget profile and OKX profile.

What we could not confirm

We read the opening post directly. The fuller reasoning and most figures in the table above come from Foresight's and PANews's summaries, and Foresight's page failed to reload when we retried it after our 20:49 SGT capture.

The post does not define break-even, so the percentages rest on our reading of the term. Ultrasound.money's data is one independent tracker, and we did not reproduce its burn totals from raw chain data.

We also found no sign of a formal Ethereum proposal tied to the post, and no statement from other core developers in the sources we opened. We cannot say that the small price move at 20:53 SGT reflects any view of the post. It was less than an hour old, and the 24-hour range on OKX was only 2,220.89 to 2,247.03.
