Kraken Convert Small Balances: Clear Crypto Dust and Check the Fee

7 min

The short answer

Use Kraken's Convert small balances feature when leftover crypto is below the ordinary trading minimum: open Portfolio, find the small-balance conversion control, review the included assets and destination, and confirm only if the result suits you. Kraken's official guide describes the threshold as approximately USD 1, limits the feature to one conversion every 24 hours, and states a 3% conversion fee; it is a paid account conversion, not a bank withdrawal.

Why a visible balance can be too small to sell

An account can show a genuine holding without accepting an ordinary order for it. Kraken calls balances below the minimum instant buy or sell size small balances. Its help article explains that these leftovers can arise after trading or withdrawing. Seeing a fractional balance after a previous transaction therefore does not, by itself, mean that a payment is missing or that the account has been charged twice.

The useful distinction is between ownership and order eligibility. A portfolio display answers what remains in the account. A trading screen applies the minimum for the operation you selected. Kraken says these small balances cannot be traded through its instant trading service or Kraken Pro spot trading because they are below trading minimums. The separate conversion feature supplies a route for dealing with them.

The official guide uses approximately USD 1 as an explanation of the instant-order threshold. Do not read that approximation as a promise that every asset with a value just below that figure will appear in your selection screen. Check the actual assets offered by the account. Our Kraken profile gives the broader platform context; this guide concerns the specific leftover-balance control.

Decide whether conversion is actually useful

Start with a destination, not the wish to make the portfolio look tidy. Kraken says the feature can turn small balances into a chosen asset, giving BTC and USD as examples. Converting into another crypto asset keeps the result in crypto. Selecting an available cash asset changes the type of balance inside the account; it does not tell a bank to send or receive money.

A preferred destination assetRead its exact ticker in the previewThat a similarly named asset is interchangeable

Leaving a small balance untouched is also a decision. The documents describe a tool, not an obligation to clear every leftover. If the quoted result is not worth the cost or you do not want the offered destination, stop before confirmation. There is no reason to add money or make another trade merely to produce a cleaner screenshot.

Find the control in the Kraken app

Kraken labels its help instructions as applying to the refreshed Kraken app interface. Open Portfolio and tap the ellipsis at the upper right. The menu lets you display small balances and choose Convert small crypto balances. Review the assets proposed for conversion, then select the asset you want to receive. The final action in the documented app flow is a swipe to confirm.

Take the review screen seriously even though the amounts are small. Read the source asset names and their quantities rather than relying on icons. Next read the destination ticker and quoted outcome. A decision to consolidate into BTC differs from a decision to hold USD, even if both remove the original tiny lines from view.

If the control is not where the guide describes it, first establish which product you are using. The consumer Kraken app, Kraken web and Kraken Pro web have different documented paths. Switching instructions mid-flow makes it easier to mistake a general conversion ticket for the dust tool. The article does not establish a Kraken Pro mobile route, so this guide does not invent one.

Use Kraken web or Kraken Pro web

On Kraken web, the official steps begin with Portfolio. Scroll past the transaction area to Convert small balances. Choose the asset to convert from and proceed, then choose the destination asset and confirm when ready. Use the actual preview to determine which balances and amounts the current account permits.

Kraken Pro web has its own path: Portfolio, then Overview, then Balances at the lower left, followed by Convert small balances. The help article also says the feature can be reached through the Spot tab. Select the destination asset and review the conversion before completing it.

These paths explain why searching only the ordinary order form can be frustrating. A spot trading minimum is not removed simply because a dust-conversion function exists elsewhere in the product. Conversely, the presence of the feature on Kraken Pro web does not make its fee the same as an ordinary maker or taker order. Keep the name of the operation and its fee rule together.

Understand the fee before cleaning up

Both Kraken's dedicated small-balance guide and its fee overview state a 3% fee for this feature. The overview treats small-balance conversions as a distinct case below the minimum order size. Do not substitute a spot trading fee tier or assume that an unrelated offer removes this charge.

For scale, applying 3% to a hypothetical USD 0.80 amount gives USD 0.024: 0.80 multiplied by 0.03. That is our arithmetic illustration, not a live quote or a promise about decimal rounding. The amount received also depends on the assets being converted and the actual conversion shown. Read the confirmation result rather than treating the example as a calculator for the account.

Small absolute amounts can make a percentage charge easy to ignore. It is still useful to ask what the conversion achieves: does it consolidate a balance you otherwise cannot use, or merely move the leftover into an asset you did not intend to hold? The answer should determine whether to proceed. The Kraken platform overview can help place this single feature alongside the platform's other transaction routes.

The 24-hour rule and the transaction record

Kraken says small balances can be converted once every 24 hours. Its guide does not describe a universal local-midnight reset. If you already used the feature, inspect the time of that conversion before assuming the button is broken. Do not repeatedly submit the same request while you are uncertain whether it has already executed.

After execution, Kraken says the converted balances appear as one entry under Portfolio. Open View transaction for the breakdown of source balances and their respective converted amounts. This is the place to reconcile what disappeared from the old asset lines with what the conversion produced.

Record the source assets, destination asset, execution time and transaction details. If the display appears inconsistent, compare those records before creating another conversion. A useful support report states the exact observed discrepancy, the interface used and the relevant transaction identifier if shown. It should not assume that a missing portfolio row proves a loss: consolidation changes how the original balances appear.

Quick answers

Can I sell dust with a normal Kraken Pro spot order?

Kraken's help page says small balances below trading minimums cannot be traded through ordinary instant trading or Kraken Pro spot. Use the specific conversion control if the balance is offered there, rather than repeatedly lowering the same ordinary order amount.

Is the conversion free?

No. The dedicated guide and general fee overview both state a 3% fee for small-balance conversion. Review the actual outcome before confirming and keep that rule separate from other trading or subscription pricing.

Does converting to USD withdraw money to my bank?

No bank payout is part of the documented conversion sequence. If the account offers USD as the destination, the conversion concerns an account balance. Our bank withdrawal guide explains the separate cash-transfer decision.

Why can I see only one entry afterward?

Kraken documents a single Portfolio entry for executed small-balance conversions. Open its transaction details to inspect the included source balances and converted amounts, rather than expecting each old line to remain unchanged.

What remains account-specific?

The official guide does not supply a universal supported-asset list, a country-by-country eligibility table or a rounding promise. Check the selection and preview offered in your account, and consult official service-availability information for your location before assuming that a described product can be used there.
