Why Is PEPE Up Today? A 13% Jump to Lead the Memecoin Rebound, and What Futures Data Says Before You Chase It
The short answer
PEPE is up about 12% to 13% on 23 October 2026 because it led a broad altcoin and memecoin rebound after Thursday's tech-stock sell-off, not because of any announcement: CoinDesk called its run "a run with no clear catalyst". On Binance, PEPE/USDT traded at 0.00000506 USDT at 12:49 UTC, up 12.4% in 24 hours, while open interest in the PEPE perpetual rose about 23% in the same period and funding had briefly turned negative just before the move, a pattern that points to leveraged traders and short covering doing much of the lifting.

What happened, in numbers
The move started at the Asian open. Bitcoin rose about 0.5% to around 81,700 USD after midnight UTC, recovering from a low near 81,000 USD, while the altcoin market moved faster. CoinDesk's memecoin gauge gained 2.9% and PEPE rose 14% at its peak reading, leading CoinDesk's 100-coin index with its biggest daily advance in a month. CoinDesk put the weekly gain at 23% and the monthly gain at 16%.

| Bitget PEPE/USDT perpetual | 0.000005043 | +12.6% | 0.0000042773 – 0.0000051089 | about 59 million USDT |
Two things stand out. First, Binance's perpetual contract traded more than five times the volume of Binance's spot market, so this was mostly a derivatives move. Second, the daily candles on Binance spot show PEPE climbing from 0.00000403 at the open on 16 October to 0.00000506, about 25% in a week, which matches CoinDesk's description of a steady weekly run rather than a single spike.
Why it rose: three forces, no headline
1. A risk-on bounce after a bad day for tech. Thursday's sell-off pushed the Nasdaq Composite down 2.6%, its steepest fall since June, and crypto followed. On Friday Asian stocks steadied and crypto rebounded. In rebounds like this, high-beta coins such as memecoins usually move more than bitcoin in both directions. CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season indicator rose to 58 out of 100, up from 54 on Monday, according to CoinDesk.
2. Leverage piled in. Binance's open interest history for the 1000PEPEUSDT perpetual shows open positions worth about 87.5 million USD at 12:00 UTC on 22 October and about 108.0 million USD at 12:00 UTC on 23 October, an increase of roughly 23%. When open interest rises together with price, new leveraged positions are being opened, not just closed. Binance's account ratio shows the crowd leaning long: 69.3% of tracked accounts held long positions at 12:00 UTC, a long/short ratio of 2.26.

3. A short squeeze around midnight UTC. The Binance funding rate for the PEPE perpetual was negative, at −0.0095%, at the 00:00 UTC settlement on 23 October, which means shorts were paying longs as the market sat near its lows. By the next settlement at 08:00 UTC it was back at the standard +0.01%, and OKX and Bitget were also showing +0.01% per eight hours. A flip from negative to positive funding while price jumps is the signature of shorts being forced to buy back. Our liquidation feed recorded about 1.29 million USD of liquidations in Binance's 1000PEPEUSDT contract in the four hours to 12:46 UTC, which makes it one of the five most-liquidated contracts in that window.
What we did not find: no exchange listing, no token unlock, no protocol upgrade and no statement from a team or large holder explaining the move. That matters, because rallies without news tend to depend on momentum continuing.
What this means for you
If you already hold PEPE on spot, nothing about your coins has changed; the token is the same and the move is a price move. The question is only whether you want to take some profit after a 25% week.
If you are thinking of buying now, you are buying after the move. Funding is back at a normal positive rate, which means longs pay shorts again, and open interest is higher than a day ago. A crowded long side with no catalyst is exactly the setup in which a quick drop can trigger the next wave of long liquidations. You can watch that risk building on our live boards.
The live liquidations widget above shows which side is being forced out across Binance and OKX. If long liquidations start to dominate while PEPE stalls, the leveraged buyers are the ones being flushed. Separately, if PEPE funding climbs well above +0.01% per eight hours while price stalls, longs are paying more to hold their bets; that is the moment leverage, not demand, is carrying the price. Our funding-rate board and 24-hour liquidations page update throughout the day.
A practical checklist before trading PEPE today
- Use spot if you do not need leverage. A 13% daily range is enough to liquidate a 10x position in either direction.
- If you trade the perpetual, size for the range. PEPE moved about 18% from its 24-hour low to its high on Binance futures. Keep the liquidation price outside that range.
- Know which contract you are trading. Binance's 1000PEPEUSDT perpetual is priced per 1,000 tokens; Bitget's PEPEUSDT perpetual is priced per token. Check the contract size before entering an order.
- Check funding before you hold overnight. On Binance, OKX and Bitget the PEPE perpetual settles every eight hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC.
- Do not chase a no-news rally with market orders. Limit orders cost less and keep you from buying the top tick; maker and taker rates for each venue are on our Binance and Bitget profiles.
How to act on this
If you do trade memecoin perpetuals, fees add up fast because short-term traders open and close often. Bitget lists the PEPEUSDT perpetual with eight-hour funding; opening a Bitget account with code nexu888 returns part of every trading fee to you automatically each day. Compare it with other venues on our exchange pages before you choose, and keep leverage low until funding and open interest calm down. For more on how memecoins behave, see our meme coins hub.
