Why Is IOST Down 50% Today? The 157% Pump, the Crash and What Futures Traders Should Check

5 min

The short answer

IOST is down about 50% in 24 hours because it is unwinding a two-day pump: the token rose roughly 157% on Binance, from about $0.000744 on 20 October to a peak of $0.001908 late on 21 October, then fell back to around $0.000854 by 16:50 UTC on 22 October (00:50 SGT on 23 October). The rally ran on borrowed money and Korean spot demand rather than on any announcement we could find: Binance futures open interest grew more than eightfold during the climb, futures turnover of $566 million dwarfed IOST's $31 million market value, and Upbit's KRW market is now the largest spot venue for the coin. If you still hold IOST or trade its perpetuals, the numbers to watch are funding, open interest and how close the price sits to where the pump started.

22 Oct, 16:50 UTC (00:50 SGT 23 Oct)$0.000854About 55% below the peak and 15% above the base

Binance's 24-hour ticker showed a 49.8% drop at the time we read it. OKX's IOST perpetual showed the same shape: a 24-hour high of $0.0017828 and a low of $0.0008423. Bitget's IOSTUSDT perpetual was down 50.3% over the same window.

For scale: CoinGecko put IOST's market value at about $31 million and its all-time high at $0.1298, set in January 2018. Even at the top of this week's pump, the token was still more than 98% below that record.

Where the buying came from

Two things stand out in the data.

Leverage built up fast. Binance's open-interest history for the IOSTUSDT perpetual shows about $1.9 million of open positions at 08:00 UTC on 20 October. By 20:00 UTC on 21 October that had climbed to $16.3 million, more than eight times higher, right as the price peaked. By 16:00 UTC on 22 October it had shrunk to $9.7 million, so roughly 40% of those positions were closed or liquidated during the fall.

Turnover was far larger than the coin. Binance's IOSTUSDT perpetual traded $566 million in 24 hours, about 18 times IOST's entire market value. Bitget's perpetual added another $60 million. When a token's futures volume is many times its market value, price is being driven by traders flipping leveraged positions rather than by people buying to hold.

Korean spot demand. CoinGecko's exchange list shows Upbit's IOST/KRW market as the busiest spot venue at the time of reading, with $16.8 million in 24-hour volume, ahead of Binance's spot pair at $15.8 million. Bithumb's KRW market added $5.7 million.

What we could not verify: we found no official statement from the IOST team, no exchange listing and no product announcement that explains the rally. Treat the move as a trading-driven pump until a primary source says otherwise.

Funding now pays the longs

After the crash, the perpetual contracts flipped to negative funding, which means traders who are short pay those who are long. Binance now settles IOST funding every hour, and the last twelve hourly rates on 22 October ranged from −0.0247% to −0.0995%. Added up, shorts paid about 0.51% of their position size in those twelve hours. OKX's current rate was −0.081% per hour and Bitget's −0.082% per hour, also on hourly settlement.

Negative funding after a crash tells you two things. First, many traders are now betting on further falls, which is a crowded position of its own. Second, holding a short is costly: at −0.08% an hour, a short position pays close to 2% a day, which can eat any profit from a slow drift lower. Our funding-rate board shows the same numbers for the major coins, so you can compare IOST's rates with a normal market.

What to check if you hold or trade IOST

  • Spot holders: the price is back near the level where the rally began. If you bought near the top, the question is whether you would buy IOST at today's price with fresh money. If not, a pump-and-fade chart rarely rewards waiting for a return to the peak.
  • Long perpetuals: you are currently being paid funding, but open interest is still about five times its pre-rally level. Those positions can unwind in either direction. Keep leverage low and decide in advance where you exit; the pre-rally base near $0.00074 is the obvious reference level.
  • Short perpetuals: at roughly −0.08% per hour, funding costs add up quickly. A short needs a fast move to pay off; check the rate before each hourly settlement.
  • Watch open interest: if it keeps falling while price stabilises, the leveraged excess is clearing. A new jump in open interest without news would signal another round of speculation.
  • Watch liquidations: our 24-hour liquidations page tracks forced closures on Binance and OKX, so you can see when a squeeze is building.

How to act on this

If you trade fast-moving altcoin perpetuals such as IOST, every round trip pays fees, and funding settles every hour. Bitget lists the IOSTUSDT perpetual with hourly funding; opening a Bitget account with code nexu888 returns part of every trading fee to you automatically each day. Size positions so that a 20% swing does not liquidate you, because IOST moved more than that in four hours on 21 October.

Quick answers

Why is IOST down today? It is reversing a 157% two-day pump that peaked on 21 October. No official announcement explained the rally, and the leveraged positions built during the climb are now being closed.

How much did IOST rise before it crashed? From about $0.000744 on 20 October to $0.001908 on 21 October on Binance, roughly 157%.

Where is IOST trading most? At the time of reading, Upbit's KRW market was the largest spot venue, followed by Binance. Binance's perpetual had by far the largest turnover at $566 million in 24 hours.

Is IOST funding positive or negative? Negative. Shorts pay longs every hour on Binance, OKX and Bitget, at roughly −0.04% to −0.08% per hour on 22 October.

Is IOST near its all-time high? No. The all-time high is $0.1298 from January 2018; today's price is more than 99% below it.
